Nietzsche, Friedrich
died Aug. 25, 1900, Weimar, Thuringian States anti-Semitism , and power politics, his name was later invoked by Fascists to advance the very things he loathed.
The early years
In 1850 the family moved to Naumburg on the Saale River, where Nietzsche attended a private preparatory school, the Domgymnasium. In 1858 he earned a scholarship to Schulpforta, Germany's leading Protestant boarding school. He excelled academically at Pforta, received an outstanding classical education there, and, having graduated in 1864, went to the University of Bonn to study theology and classical philology. Despite efforts to take part in the university's social life, the two semesters at Bonn were a failure, owing chiefly to acrimonious quarrels between his two leading classics professors, Otto Jahn and Friedrich Wilhelm Ritschl. Nietzsche sought refuge in music, writing a number of compositions strongly influenced by Robert Schumann, the German Romantic composer. In 1865 he transferred to the University of Leipzig, joining Ritschl, who had accepted an appointment there. Nietzsche prospered under Ritschl's tutelage in Leipzig. He became the only student ever to publish in Ritschl's journal

Nietzsche, Friedrich Wilhelm
German philosopher, poet, and classical philologist, who became one of the most provocative and influential thinkers of the 19th century.
Life and Works
In addition to the influence of Greek culture, particularly the philosophies of Plato and Aristotle , Nietzsche was influenced by the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, by the theory of evolution, and by his friendship with the German composer Richard Wagner.
A prolific writer, he wrote several major works, among them The Birth of Tragedy (1872; trans. 1966), Thus Spoke Zarathustra (1883-85; trans. 1954), Beyond Good and Evil (1886; trans. 1966), On the Genealogy of Morals (1887; trans. 1966), The Antichrist (1888; trans. 1954), Ecce Homo (1889; trans. 1966), and The Will to Power (1901; trans. 1910).
One of Nietzsche's fundamental contentions was that traditional values (represented primarily by Christianity) had lost their power in the lives of individuals. He expressed this in his proclamation "God is dead." He was convinced that traditional values represented a "slave morality," a morality created by weak and resentful individuals who encouraged such behavior as gentleness and kindness because the behavior served their interests. Nietzsche claimed that new values could be created to replace the traditional ones, and his discussion of the possibility led to his concept of the overman or superman.

Nietzsche, Friedrich
Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) was a German philosopher of uncommon gifts and profound influence. His productive life was very short, lasting roughly from 1872 until he collapsed in Turin in 1889. During this brief span he composed 14 books, numerous shorter works, a prodigious mass of notes, and a huge number of letters. Totally incapacitated after his collapse, which may have been due to syphilis, he lived for 11 more years under the care of his sister, who had exclusive control of his papers and rigidly controlled access to them. Nietzsche's reputation as an anti-Semitic proto-Nazi thinker was in large part due to her activities. Generally unknown and not appreciated while he could still enjoy his status, Nietzsche, who once wrote of himself, "Only the day after tomorrow belongs to me. Some are born posthumously" (preface to The Antichrist ), is now one of the most widely read philosophers in the world.
Part of the reason for Nietzsche's broad appeal is that he produced some of the greatest writing in the history of German letters. His works are extremely intense and passionate, do not at all depend on the technical terms and unwieldy syntax often characteristic of German philosophy, andthough Nietzsche's views themselves are often elusiveare accessible and engaging to a vast range of readers. Nietzsche was a master of the aphorism, and his extraordinarily personal style gave him an unusual place within the history of philosophy. It also made him attractive to a number of literary authors (W. B. Yeats, Henry James, and Thomas Mann, among others), painters (Pablo Picasso and the German Expressionists), and literary critics (

TWILIGHT OF THE IDOLS
CONTENTS Preface Maxims and Arrows The Problem of Socrates "Reason" in Philosophy ... The Hammer Speaks
PREFACE Maintaining cheerfulness in the midst of a gloomy affair, fraught with immeasurable responsibility, is no small feat; and yet what is needed more than cheerfulness? Nothing succeeds if prankishness has no part in it. Excess of strength alone is the proof of strength. A revaluation of all values, this question mark, so black, so tremendous that it casts shadows upon the man who puts it downsuch a destiny of a task compels one to run into the sun every moment to shake off a heavy, all-too-heavy seriousness. Every means is proper for this; every "case"a case of luck. Especially, war. War has always been the great wisdom of all spirits who have become too inward, too profound; even in a wound there is the power to heal. A maxim, the origin of which I withhold from scholarly curiosity, has long been my motto: Increscunt animi, virescit volnere virtus.

Nietzsche 1844 - 1897
Lebensdaten
Kuraufenthalte in Sils-Maria bringen keine langfristige Besserung.

He argued that God is dead and therefore people were free to create their own values. His ideal was the , or Superman , who would impose his will on the weak and worthless. Nietzsche claimed that knowledge is never objective but always serves some interest or unconscious purpose. His insights into the relation between thought and language were a major influence on philosophy. Although he has been claimed as a precursor by Nazism, many of his views are incompatible with totalitarian ideology. He is a profoundly ambivalent thinker whose philosophy can be appropriated for many purposes. Nietzsche's The Antichrist
Travis J. Denneson
I. Introduction
In his book, The Antichrist , Nietzsche sets out to denounce and illegitimize not only Christianity itself as a belief and a practice, but also the ethical-moral value system which modern western civilization has inherited from it. This book can be considered a further development of some of his ideas concerning Christianity that can be found in Beyond Good and Evil and in The Genealogy of Morals , particularly the idea that the present morality is an inversion of true, noble morality. An understanding of the main ideas in the latter works are therefore quite helpful in understanding and fully appreciating the ideas set forth in The Antichrist . One of the most important of these ideas is that Christianity has made people nihilistic and weak by regarding pity and related sentiments as the highest virtues. Here, just as in the Genealogy , Nietzsche traces the origin of these values to the ancient Jews who lived under Roman occupation, but here he puts them in terms of a reversal of their conception of God. He argues that the Jewish God was once one which embodied the noble virtues of a proud, powerful people, but when they became subjugated by the Romans, their God began to embody the "virtues" (more like sentiments) of an oppressed, resentful people, until it became something entirely alien to what it formerly had been.
Further in the book, after Nietzsche devotes a few passages to contrasting Buddhism with Christianity, he paints a picture of the Jesus of history as actually having lived a type of "Buddhistic" existence, and lambastes Paul particularly for turning this historically correct Jesus, vis-à-vis, Jesus the "Nazarene," into Jesus the "Christ." Also, Nietzsche argues that the Christian moral and metaphysical principles he considers so decadent have infiltrated our philosophy, so much that philosophers unwittingly work to defend these principles even when God is removed from the hypothesis. The purpose of this paper is to expound and assess some of these important reproaches that Nietzsche raises against Christianity, in order to glean from them those elements which can be considered to have lasting significance. It should also be noted that
