Er starb 1927 im Alter von 45 Jahren. Sein wissenschaftliches Werk war die Weiterbildung der kritischen Philosophie Kants im Sinne der Schule von Jakob Friedrich Fries (1773-1843). "Die Art der Behandlung, die dieses Problem [der unmittelbaren Pflichten gegenüber nicht-menschlichen Tieren] in der Ethik erfahren hat, würde ein vernichtendes Zeugnis für die Kräfte des menschlichen Verstandes abgeben, wenn nicht von vornherein klar wäre, daß hier weniger der Irrtum als ein Interesse im Spiele ist." Nicht die Schwierigkeiten der wissenschaftlichen Begründung und Eingliederung der Tierrechte in das System der Ethik allein haben die PhilosophInnen die nicht-menschlichen Tiere ‚vergessen' lassen, sondern auch die Furcht vor den Konsequenzen im persönlichen und gesellschaftlichen Leben. Kant hatte den Bereich der Pflichten auf Menschen beschränkt. Nach Kant gibt es gegenüber nicht-menschlichen Tieren nur mittelbare Pflichten. Tierquälerei sei verwerflich, weil sie die Gefühle abstumpfe und so die Erfüllung der Pflichten gegen Mitmenschen gefährde.

He would then rape the corpse and hide the body. Nelson continued his killing spree across the United States. Finally, with the police following him, Nelson fled to Canada. Nelson then killed two more people and was then arrested. When in custody Nelson escaped, and twelve hours later he was back in prison. He was later sentenced to death, and was hung later that year. Kill Count~ 22+ BORN : May 12, 1897 DIED : January 13, 1928 "I only do my ladykillings on Saturday nights" Nelson was an odd-looking man, with the receding forehead, protruding lips, and huge hands that led to his nickname, 'The Gorilla Murderer'. He had been born in Philadelphia in 1897, though his mother died of venereal disease contracted from his father when Earle was less than one-year-old, and he was fostered out to his aunt Lillian. She was a devoutly religious woman, a trait that she instilled into her impressionable young nephew, with whom religion would become a Bible-thumping obsession. At the age of ten Nelson suffered a severe head injury when a moving streetcar hit him, and this trauma left him with physical and mental problems throughout his life. In fact as early as 1918, Nelson was admitted to a mental hospital after attempting to rape a neighbour's daughter. He absconded several times'and was readmitted; the following year he contracted a marriage which was fated to last a mere six months; he was now calling himself Roger Wilson. Between February 1926, and June 1927, as the Gorilla Murderer, Nelson went on a rampage which left twenty-two known victims dead, all women, all boarding-house landladies, all raped and strangled. The first victim was found in the attic of her rooming house in San Francisco on 20 February 1926; sixty-year-old Clara Newman had been displaying a 'Rooms to Let' sign in her downstairs window, Earle Nelson had come to inquire about one. Between this brutal attack and his last, in Winnipeg, Canada, Nelson managed to evade justice by continually moving around and changing his name.

Wem dies nicht einleuchtet, oder wem die damit erhobene Forderung zu weitgehend erscheint, der braucht sich nur die Frage vorzulegen, ob er für sich selbst damit einverstanden sein würde, von einem ihm an Macht überlegenen Wesen nach dessen Belieben mißbraucht zu werden. Man darf daher diese Forderung auch nicht etwa als einen Ausfluß bloßer Sentimentalität ansehen. Denn sie verlangt nur die Erfüllung einer Pflicht, nicht aber mutet sie uns einen Akt des Wohlwollens zu. Wenigstens wird man so lange hier nicht von übertriebener Sentimentalität sprechen dürfen, als man sich noch die Sentimentalität gestattet, nicht selber durch den bloßen Anblick der Tierquälerei gequält werden zu wollen, durch einen Anblick, der doch wohl im allgemeinen eine weit geringere Qual bedeutet als die dem gequälten Tier selbst zugefügte. Wer auch nur die Möglichkeit zugesteht, durch den Anblick von Tierquälerei selbst gequält zu werden, der gesteht damit zu, daß auch die Tiere den Schmerz empfinden. Und er beweist damit zugleich, daß er in die dem Tiere zugefügten Leiden seinerseits nicht einwilligen würde. Wer daher die Forderungen der strengen Durchführung eines gesetzlichen Rechtsschutzes der Tiere als einen Ausfluß sentimentaler Schwäche verwirft, der dürfte wenigstens auch nicht so sentimental sein, daran Anstoß zu nehmen, wenn sonst wehrlose Wesen, etwa seine eigenen Kinder, von anderen zu beliebigem Genuß mißbraucht werden. Ja zu allererst müßte er, um der Konsequenz willen, für seine eigene Person auf allen und jeden gesetzlichen Rechtsschutz zu verzichten bereit sein. Er müßte sich denn zu der Behauptung versteigen, daß die bloße größere Macht, sich selbst gegen Mißhandlungen zu schützen, einen größeren Anspruch auf staatlichen Schutz begründe.
