Over the course of his active life, Karl Marx' thinking about the revolutionary process naturally evolved and developed. His work must therefore be considered in its entirety to adequately understand his perceptions. It would be inaccurate to characterize Marx' analysis of the revolutionary process strictly on the basis of his early writing - such works as The German Ideology (1845-46) and the Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts (1844). A better understanding requires examining how the theoretical premises suggested by these introductory works evolved when tested in revolutionary practice. As a scientific thinker, Marx understood that the ultimate test of any theory is practice. The location for testing his ideas regarding class struggle - his laboratory - was the labor movement. How did the experiences of the two great revolutionary periods in Marx' life - the revolutions of 1848-49 and the Paris Commune of 1871 - change his thinking? The two crucial texts to understanding Marx's thinking about revolution are The Communist Manifesto and The Civil War in France . Of these

A note to those of you who managed to get here without reading the preamble on my Writings page: When I HTMLized this document, I found myself categorically unhappy with the format of the citations. I should get around to making them presentable at some point (I promised this a long time ago, I know, but I haven't as of yet). In the interim, if you want more information on my sources or want to send me some commentary, please e-mail me Postmodern theorists have traditionally concerned themselves most fundamentally with an attack on positivistic, macrophenonemal theory. According to these theorists, attempts to construct "grand theory," as identified by C. Wright Mills(**), necessarily dismiss the naturally existing "chaos and disorder" of the universe, placing it in an arbitrary framework which, in the words of Michel Foucault, fails to "respect...differences" (**). Employing a Nietzschean, perspectivist approach, postmodernists argue for the existence of a multiplicity of theoretical standpoints, addressing the relationship of the individual to the phenomenon, rather than trying to place either into a broader schema. In this way, postmodernist thought emphasizes the need for microtheory dealing with the nature of "difference," rather than holistic macrotheory. For Karl Marx and traditional Marxists, microtheory, though useful in describing epiphenomena, does not ultimately address the needs of a historical model of change. Relevant social theory, for Marx, gives primacy to the macrosphere, dealing with major socio-historical change. The employment of philosophical materialism in this setting separates him from postmodern thought, as Marx affirms a necessary connection between the material conditions of existence and the content of individual cognition, a more positivistic assertion. Ultimately, Marx argues for an "soft" economic determinism, asserting that the socio-political institutions and abstractions addressed by postmodernism form a superstructure, primarily contingent upon activity in the economic sphere, though able to effect change within it. This can be seen in Marx's argument that:

Karl Marx: vida i obra.

Marx and Engels on Spiritualism and Theosophy
by Herman A.O. de Tollenaere English home page Friedrich Engels (1820-1895)
There are several ways to look at relationships (friendly or unfriendly relationships) between occultism and political tendencies, such as Marxism. In this regard, Bruce Campbell has observed that "Esoteric and mystical sources have been identified as part of the intellectual background for Hegelian and Marxist thought." He did not elaborate on this observation, however, and neither will we. The statement must relate to indirect influence of pre-1800 ideas via Hegel. This concerns, however, an earlier age than the subject of this article. Nor does this article consider subjects later in history, like reciprocal opinions of twentieth century communists and theosophists in such countries as India and Sri Lanka; though that is part of wider research in which I am now involved. This article is specifically about Karl Marx' (1818-1883) and Friedrich Engels' (1820-1895) views on spiritualism and theosophy. They both embarked on their political careers in the 1840's, in the Communist League, an international organization, in which migrant German workers in England were heavily represented. Nineteenth century spiritualism was a widespread, but not well organized movement. As is well-known, it began with the

39. Marx
Maatschappelijke arbeid als substraat van de politiek. Informatie over de filosofie van marx.
http://www.eur.nl/fw/onderwijs/inl-dia-diff-prop/marx.html
II.
