MARCUSE, Herbert (1898-1979) By Lloyd Spencer Marcuse emerged as philosopher and scholar within Weimar Germany. After participating in the attempted Social Democratic revolution in Berlin in 1917 and becoming familiar with the works of Marx he went to study with Heidegger at Freiburg University in 1928. Marcuse’s hopes for a radical new beginning for philosophy (and a synthesis between existentialism and Marxism) led him back to Hegel. In 1932 he published a major study of Hegel and in 1933 he published the first major review of rediscovered Marx's 1844 Manuscripts. In 1934 he fled Nazism and emigrated to the USA, where he lived for the rest of his life. Reason and Revolution (1941) provided a study of the genesis of Hegel's thought and drew Hegel and Marx closer together as social philosophers responding to revolutionary possibilities (and social movements) in the society of their time. Marcuse's thinking was closely related to the hegelian Marxism — or "Critical Theory" — developed by the members of the Frankfurt School (The Institute for Social Research) under the guidance of HORKHEIMER and ADORNO. Eros and Civilization (1955) presented a reading of Freud influenced by Marcuse's own existentialist form of Marxism. In it he upheld the view that the liberation of society would need to overcome, or at least transform, that repression which Freud had regarded as constitutive of ego-formation and therefore as a constant in civilization. In 1958 Marcuse published

The people recognize themselves in their commodities; they find their soul in their automobile, hi-fi set, split-level home, kitchen equipment.
If mass communications blend together harmoniously, and often unnoticeably, art, politics, religion, and philosophy with commercials, they bring these realms of culture to their common denominator the commodity form.
... all cognitive concepts have a transitive meaning: they go beyond descriptive reference to particular facts.
Not every problem someone has with his girlfriend is necessarily due to the capitalist mode of production.
The rational society subverts the idea of Reason.
Self-determination, the autonomy of the individual, asserts itself in the right to race his automobile, to handle his power tools, to buy a gun, to communicate to mass audiences his opinion, no matter how ignorant, how aggressive, it may be.
Free election of masters does not abolish the masters or the slaves.
The web of domination has become the web of Reason itself, and this society is fatally entangled in it.
The mass media is complicit in the repression of free speech and the advancement of ideas that challenge the conventional wisdom. The need for alternative media has never been more acute.

Marcuse, Herbert OO u Pronunciation Key Marcuse, Herbert , U.S. political philosopher, b. Berlin. He was educated at the Univ. of Freiburg and with Theodore Adorno and Max Horkheimer founded the Frankfurt Institute of Social Research. A special target of the Nazis because of his Jewish origins and Marxist politics, he emigrated (1934) to the United States and became a naturalized citizen in 1940. Marcuse served with the Office of Strategic Services during World War II and later taught at Harvard, Columbia, and Brandeis before becoming (1965) professor of philosophy at the Univ. of California at San Diego. He is best known for his attempt to synthesize Marxian and Freudian theories into a comprehensive critique of modern industrial society. In One Dimensional Man (1964), his most popular book, he argued for a sexual basis to the social and political repression in contemporary America; the book made him a hero of New Left radicals and provided a rationale for the student revolts of the 1960s in the United States and Europe. His other works include

A book has a message, which is surrounded by selling trics. Selling may be brilliant but here I just give the message.
One Dimensional Man Herbert Marcuse, One-Dimensional Man , Boston: Beacon Press, 1964. Abstract (analytic 'summary') in a few lines by your personal professor Henk Tuten
Showing weak points of forms of domination is their goal, members of Critical Theory like Marcuse don't aim at solutions.
4 observations:
1. Economy has become being controlled by economic forces and relationships
2. Thought has become what mass communication feeds people, making the "public opinion"
3. Established science and its scientific methods is by itself limited, but it 'makes' the world around us. It is only partly and temporarily the 'truth'.
4. The present prosperous welfare states end up being asocial and unpatriotic, lacking real freedom.
Leading to 4 proposals:
· Freedom is being free from the daily struggle for existence · Economic freedom being free from the economy · Political freedom is liberation of the individuals from politics over which they have no control. · Intellectual freedom is restoration of the individual 1 wise statement: [The philosopher`s job is] to understand [the world in which we live] in terms of what it has done to man, and what it can do to man.

Eros and Civilization
A Philosophical inquiry into Freud. London: Alan Lane: The Penguin Press, 1969 Review by your Personal Professor Freud made into a Sexy Marx Freud claimed that the human civilization was, founded on the suppression of instincts. Sex in any form produces the energy for progress and the price of it is loosing part of happiness to guilt. Freud thought that this was because of the inevitable biological clash between Sex and civilization. Marcuse sees Sex as part of civilization and argues that 'the conflict is not between work [life without leisure] and Sex [leisure and pleasure], but between performance and Sex.' Marcuse believes that a socialist society could be a society without needing the performance of the 'poor' and without suppression.
He concludes that biological repression itself is not the problem but the extra repression, coming from historical institutions of our own period. The result is that Marcuse transformed Freud into a sort of Sexy Marx Marcuse keeps believing in the youth. In a new preface to

Marcuse, Herbert (1964), One-dimensional man. Studies in the ideology of advanced industrial society. With a new introduction by Douglas Kellner. Boston (Beacon Press) 1991, 114
Where these reduced (operational - E.W.) concepts govern the analysis of the human reality, individual or social, mental or material, they arrive at a false concreteness - a concreteness isolated from the conditions which constitute its reality. In this context, the operational treatment of the concept assumes a political function. The individual and his behavior are analyzed in a therapeutic sense - adjustment to his society. Thought and expression, theory and practice are to be brought in line with the facts of his existence without leaving room for the conceptual critique of these facts.
Marcuse, Herbert (1964), One-dimensional man. Studies in the ideology of advanced industrial society. With a new introduction by Douglas Kellner. Boston (Beacon Press) 1991, 106-107
The society which projects and undertakes the technological transformation of nature alters the base of domination by gradually replacing personal dependence (of the slave on the master, the serf on the lord of the manor, the lord on the donor of the fief, etc.) with dependence on the "objective order of things" (on economic laws, the market, etc.).

German neo-Marxian philosopher, social theorist and radical social critic. Considered to be the father of the New Left in Europe and the United States of the 1960's and 70's. In his famous book, One-Dimensional Man (1964), he formulated a theory of "advanced industrial society" (otherwise called " late capitalism "), in which the dominance of mass media, advertisement and new structures of industrial organization neutralized protest against the established order, reducing human beings to one-dimensional, power -dominated actors.
