Subject Index Search Announcements Feedback ... Support this Site Section 1 Introduction Whose Justice? Which Rationality? by Alasdair MacIntyre, Notre Dame: University of Notre Dame Press, 1988. 410 pp., index This is an important book, a book with which Muslims, in particular, need to become acquainted. The author, Alasdair MacIntyre, is one of the most profound and most controversial moralists and social thinkers of our time. The book, Whose Justice? Which Rationality?, is not an easy work. It requires some familiarity with various details of Western culture, in particular its moral and political philosophies. So, rather than merely summarize the work, I will try to show why I think it is important for Muslim thinkers to read and criticize it. For this purpose I begin with a general discussion of the work's importance in the context of MacIntyre's other writings, and then turn to two of the major topics discussed in the work, relativism and liberalism. Finally, I offer some humble criticisms of my own, and suggestions for further research. Of all those who have stood against the currents of modernism, Alasdair MacIntyre stands out as the philosopher who has offered the most profound critique. His

The Achievement of Alasdair MacIntyre
Edward T. Oakes
Moral philosophers are caught in a peculiar paradox these days. On the one hand, their field is flourishing: No longer intimidated by the logical positivists (who denied truth to moral assertions except as expressions of likes and dislikes), thinkers as diverse as Iris Murdoch, Martha Nussbaum, and Bernard Williams are leading the attack against such debilitating philosophical notions as Hume's notorious "Is/Ought" distinction and Kant's simplistic fusion of morality with mere duty. On the other hand, the world in which these moral philosophers flourish is a world that has lost its moral bearings in an unprecedented way. The philosopher most attuned to this paradox is Alasdair MacIntyre, and his analysis goes furthest, I think, in explaining why the twentieth century is so uniquely appalling. His work is not necessarily the best moral philosophy now being written-Iris Murdoch, for one, may offer a rival philosophy he would find difficult to answer-but his analysis of our moral paradox is so acute that he, perhaps uniquely among contemporary philosophers, offers the possibility of its solution.

by Mari Tumoka Mythology has always played a large part in the work of numerous artists throughout the decades, from the standard “household name” artists, to the obscure, to artists who have been relegated to the “cutting room floor” of western art history.
When looking at the major art produced by Alasdair Macintyre over the last decade, we can see an evolutionary thread which has linked Macintyre’s almost obsessive concern with art history, his religious belief system, the redundant images of societal mass-culture, and his awareness of the place of the artist as “shaman” or visionary in the great big scheme of things. His current art practice owes much to his early explorations into incorporating his personal philosophy and belief system into his art. After early years of struggling to find a personal mode of expression following his graduation from the Queensland College of Art in the early nineties (and an aborted attempt at pursuing an art career in London) , Macintyre first came to the attention of Brisbane art audiences with his “Black Box” series. Shallow box frames which contained various substances sealed behind a sheet of tinted glass upon which a small body of text was carefully painted. Some of these “Black Boxes” received minor critical acclaim, through commendation awards in Brisbane and interstate, with others entering private collections.

Philosophy of Science Lakatos and MacIntyre on Incommensurability and the Rationality of Theory-change Robert Miner
University of Notre Dame
ABSTRACT: I. Lakatos' Rejection of the Incommensurability Thesis Lakatos rejects the incommensurability of rival scientific theories, a thesis advanced in the work of Thomas Kuhn and Paul Feyerabend. The thesis, as characterized by Dudley Shapere, is that far from it being the case that an earlier such theory is encompassed in and derivable from a later one, the later one introduces entirely new meanings, standards, methods, and goals, making any deductive relationship between the two impossible (Shapere 1995: 139). We shall label this version of the incommensurability thesis IT. Lakatos advances two objections against IT. The first is the empirical fact that a single scientist can simultaneously work on two rival and ostensibly incommensurable research programs. This fact undermines Kuhns thesis of the psychological incommensurability of rival programs (Lakatos 1977: 112). We need not dwell on this objection, for it misses the point altogether. Despite his use of psychological metaphors, Kuhn is not denying the ability of a scientist to entertain two rival paradigms. IT is a thesis about linguistic structure, not the workings of the human brain. Lakatos second objection to IT is considerably more interesting. It assumes the form of an indirect attack on IT. If rival and ostensibly incommensurable theories are neither inconsistent with each other, nor comparable for content, then it becomes impossible to say that allegiance to one research program is more rational than allegiance to another. If such comparative judgments are impossible, then it appears that while scientists may decide to switch from one large-scale theory to another, there are never any reasons that mandate or justify the switch. The conclusion is that incommensurability and rationality in theory-change are simply incompatible.

A Short History of Ethics: A History of Moral Philosophy from the Homeric Age to the Twentieth Century

Professor MacIntyre's book is in some respects fine, in other respects terrible. The good thing is that he offers valuable insights and arguments for an historical approach to the analysis of moral judgments. He covers a large area, and has at times pointly summaries. The bad thing is that his text is poorly structured, and at times has a poor content. He frequently announces arguments that he does not work out, and he sets out lines that end in the mist. This fact is the more irritating, be... more...
