John Locke (1632 – 1704)

Part I covers "Works by Locke", whilst Part II, "Writings about Locke," is divided into twelve topical chapters; including a chapter on science and medicine. The site was created by John C. Attig of Pennsylvannia State University and was intended to complement the lists published in the annual Locke Newsletter (which was renamed Locke Studies Philosophy History of Medicine, 17th Cent. Bibliography Locke, John 1632-1704 ... The pre-history of cognitive science The Pre-History of Cognitive Science web site summarises the theories of human cognition developed between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. The site consists of separate pages devoted to each major thinker that discussed the relationship between the material world, our physical bodies, and abstract thought. As of June 2002, the represented writers were Robert Burton, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and George Berkeley. For each author, the page begins with a brief overview of their major texts and general intentions; next, their model of human cognition is described in some detail; finally, the significance of the model to the history of human cognition is discussed, and the strengths and weaknesses of their theories are examined. Important concepts are hyperlinked to a subject index, thus allowing the user to cross-reference particular topics in each of the featured writers. Bibliographic information and a chronology are also included.

    I. General Notions
Francis Bacon and Thomas Hobbes were not truly conscious of the phenomenalistic consequences of their theory of knowledge, which was based on Empiricism . Both considered sensation as phenomenal presentations and also as representations of reality. Thus they still had something upon which to build an absolute metaphysics. With Locke gnosiological phenomenalism enters its critical phase. By considering sensations merely as subjective presentations, Locke gives us a theory of knowledge of subjective data devoid of any relation with external objects. Hence Locke is the first to give us a logic for Empiricism, that is, for sensations considered as phenomena of knowledge.

    Chapter 1 Of Political Power
    1. It having been shown in the foregoing discourse: Firstly. That Adam had not, either by natural right of fatherhood or by positive donation from God, any such authority over his children, nor dominion over the world, as is pretended. Secondly. That if he had, his heirs yet had no right to it. Thirdly. That if his heirs had, there being no law of Nature nor positive law of God that determines which is the right heir in all cases that may arise, the right of succession, and consequently of bearing rule, could not have been certainly determined. Fourthly. That if even that had been determined, yet the knowledge of which is the eldest line of Adam's posterity being so long since utterly lost, that in the races of mankind and families of the world, there remains not to one above another the least pretence to be the eldest house, and to have the right of inheritance. All these promises having, as I think, been clearly made out, it is impossible that the rulers now on earth should make any benefit, or derive any the least shadow of authority from that which is held to be the fountain of all power, "Adam's private dominion and paternal jurisdiction"; so that he that will not give just occasion to think that all government in the world is the product only of force and violence, and that men live together by no other rules but that of beasts, where the strongest carries it, and so lay a foundation for perpetual disorder and mischief, tumult, sedition, and rebellion (things that the followers of that hypothesis so loudly cry out against), must of necessity find out another rise of government, another original of political power, and another way of designing and knowing the persons that have it than what Sir Robert Filmer hath taught us.

LOCKE: AN OVERVIEW Very shortly after Newton's Principia was published, Locke published his Essay on Human Understanding Locke brought the human mind into this mechanical world by positing a theory of knowledge in which the mind at birth is simply a blank receptacle, possessing no "innate" ideas. Over the years the mind has data added to it from the outside world. This comes in the form of "sensations" that strike this blank mind through the sensory devices of sight, hearing, feeling, taste, and smell. These data in turn are developed into full ideas by the mechanism of the mind, which sifts this imported information in the search for the agreement or disagreement of two thoughts or idea. From this mental process develops a well articulated vision of the world around usand its causes and effects. As far as "moral" ideas were concerned, Locke felt that prudence and long-term self-interest would serve the rational mind as the determiner of human action. This theory of human knowledge stood in strong distinction to the traditional understanding that the mind possessed fullyeven at birtha vast store of innate understanding that was vitally a part of its soul quality. The old theory accounted for "learning" by seeing the task not one of inserting information from the outside (as per Lockeand almost every Western educator since), but instead one of drawing out (thus the ancient word "education" which means "draw out") the wealth of innate understanding already present in the human soul. One didn't make discoveries about things "out there." A person made discoveries about things already located deep down inside oneself.

    Some Thoughts Concerning Education, 1692
    Introductory Note
John Locke was born near Bristol, England, on August 29, 1632; and was educated at Westminster School, where Dryden was his contemporary, and at Christ Church, Oxford. Of the discipline then in vogue in either institution, the future educational theorist had no high opinion, as may be gathered from allusions in the present treatise; yet, after taking his master's degree in 1658, he became tutor of his college, and lecturer in Greek and rhetoric. After a visit to the Continent in 1665, as secretary to an embassy, he returned to Oxford and took up the study of medicine. He became attached, as friend and physician, to Lord Ashley, afterward the first Earl of Shaftesbury; and while this nobleman was Lord Chancellor, Locke held the office of Secretary of Presentations. Shaftesbury went out of office in 1673, and two years later Locke went to France in search of health, supporting himself by acting as tutor to the son of Sir John Banks, and as physician to the wife of the English Ambassador at Paris. In 1679, Shaftesbury, being again in power, recalled Locke to England. He reluctantly obeyed, and remained in attendance on his patron, assisting him in political matters and superintending the education of his grandson, the future author of "Characteristics," till Shaftesbury's political fortunes finally collapsed, and both men took refuge in Holland.
