Without a doubt, Levinas' principal concern in philosophy is how the self meets the Other. His magnum opus, Totality and Infinity , bears the subtitle, An Essay on Exteriority . Exteriority refers to a region beyond the horizons of the self, that which "is" beyond transcendental subjectivity. If there are such "beings" as other selves, that is, other subjects, they exist out there in the exterior. But if knowledge is confined to the interior as Levinas says it must be then the Other cannot be known. He writes, "There is in knowledge, in the final account, an impossibility of escaping the self; hence sociality cannot have the same structure as knowledge" (EI 60).
This view that limits knowledge to the interior of conscious life rests on epistemological discoveries made by Descartes, Kant, and those that follow in their tradition. Ideas are always my ideas. They are alleged interpretations of my perceptions. But, these perceptions are also ideas, hence interpretations. What it is, then, that representations (perceptual or conceptual) re-present becomes a philosophical question along with others. Does knowledge refer at all to any extra-mental domain? If so, then how does it refer? If it turns out that knowledge is limited to the interior, then are there other subjects who represent the world as I do? If there are, then how can we know this fact?

In 1923, he began to study philosophy at Strasbourg University, where he came into contact with Charles Blondel, Maurice Halbwachs, Maurice Pradines and Henri Carteron. It was also during these student years that Levinas began his lifelong friendshi p with Maurice Blanchot. In 1928, he went to Freiburg University to pursue studies in phenomenology under Edmund Husserl. At Freiburg he also encountered Martin Heidegger, whose Being and Time (1927) was to have a profound and lasting influence on his thought. Levinas’s debt to both masters was evident in his first three major publications: The Theory of Intuition in Husserl’s Phenomenology Existence and Existents (1947), and

Death and Responsibility : The 'Work' of Levinas
(Suny Series in Contemporary Continental Philosophy) by Dennis King Keenan. The work of Levinas has, for the most part, been too easily read. Levinas's use of words like "responsibility" and "God" gives some readers reason to dismiss his work as insufficiently attentive to the whispered suspicions of our times, while giving others reason to accept his work as a clarion call guiding them out of this wilderness of disorienting whispers. Richly informed by readings of Heidegger, Derrida, and Blanchot, Keenan argues that the notion of responsibility at the heart of Levinas's notion of ethics is intimately dependent upon his account of death... Home Primary Literature Secondary Literature Announcements ... Discussion Group NEW YORK TIMES OBITUARY The New York Times, December 27, 1995 Emmanuel Levinas, 90, French Ethical Philosopher A thinker who placed ethics in the foreground of his system. By Peter Steinfels Emmanuel Levinas, a philosopher and religious thinker who made ethical responsibility for "the Other" the bedrock of his philosophical analyses, died of heart failure in Paris on Monday. He would have been 90 within a few days. His thought influenced several generations of French philosophers and, bolstered by his reflections on the Talmud, won an admiring readership among Jewish and Christian theologians, among them Pope John Paul II, who often praised and quoted his work. Born in Kaunas, Lithuania, of Jewish parents who spoke both Yiddish and Russian at home, the young scholar went to France in 1923 at the age of 17 to study at the University of Strasbourg. In 1928-29 he studied under Edmund Husseri and Martin Heidegger at the University of Freiburg. Over the next few years, he introduced the ideas of both German thinkers to France first in a doctoral dissertation, published in 1930 on the theory of intuition in Husserl's phenomenology, then in a French translation of Husserl's "Cartesian Meditations" and finally in a 1932 essay on Heidegger.
