Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz German philosopher, scientist, mathematician, diplomat and lawyer. Leibniz constructed the first mechanical calculator capable of multiplication and division. He also introduced the binary number system that is being used in all computers nowadays. Independently of Isaac Newton he 'invented' the infinitesimal calculus. He introduced several notations used in calculus to this day, for instance the integral sign representing an elongated S from the Latin word summa and the d used for differentials from the Latin word differentia . Leibniz thought symbols to be very important for the understanding of things. He also tried to develop an alphabet of human thought, in which he tried to represent all fundamental concepts using symbols and combined these symbols to represent more complex thoughts. Leibniz never finished this. His philosophical contribution to metaphysics is based on the Monadology , which introduces Monads as "substantial forms of being", which are akin to spiritual atoms, eternal, indecomposable, individual, following their own laws, not interacting ("windowless") but each reflecting the whole universe. In the way sketched above the notion of a monad solves the problem of the interaction of mind and matter that arises in Rene Descartes ' system, as well as the individuation that seems problematic in Baruch

His father died when he was just five years old. He was raised by his mother, whose religious and moral beliefs fostered his interest in philosophy. He taught himself to read Latin by age twelve and started studying Greek. In grade school he learned about Aristotle's logic and theory of categorizing knowledge. But he was dissatisfied with what he was learning and began working on his own ideas for ordering logical truths ‚ this would later develop into his ability to perform difficult mathematical proofs. In 1661, Leibniz entered the University of Leipzig. He studied philosophy and mathematics, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1663. The following fall he started working toward a doctorate in law. Soon after he was awarded his master's degree in philosophy, his mother died, and Leibniz continued with his studies, eventually earning a bachelor's degree in law. He was denied the doctorate in law at Leipzig, but he went immediately to the University of Altdorf, where he received a doctorate in law in February, 1667.

In 1661 he entered the University of Leipzig as a student of philosophy and law, and in 1666 obtained the degree of Doctor of Law at Altdorf. The following year he met the diplomat Baron von Boineburg, at whose suggestion he entered the diplomatic service of the Elector of Mainz. The years 1672 to 1676 he spent as diplomatic representative of Mainz at the Court of Louis XIV. During this time he paid a visit to London and made the acquaintance of the most learned English mathematicians, scientists, and theologians of the day. While at Paris he became acquainted with prominent representatives of Catholicism, and began to interest himself in the questions which were in dispute between Catholics and Protestants . In 1676 he accepted the position of librarian, archivist, and court councillor to the Duke of Brunswick. The remaining years of his life were spent at Hanover, with the exception of a brief interval in which he journeyed to Rome and to Vienna for the purpose of examining documents relating to the history of the House of Brunswick. He died at Hanover on 14 Nov., 1716. As a mathematician Leibniz claims with Newton the distinction of having invented (in 1675) differential calculus. As a scientist he appreciated and encharged the use of observation and experiment: "I prefer," he said, "a Leeuwenhoek who tells me what he sees to a Cartesian who tells me what he thinks." As a historian he emphasized the importance of the study of documents and archives. As a philologist he laid stress on the value of the comparative study of languages, and made some contributions to the history of German. As a philosopher he is undoubtedly the foremost German thinker of the eighteenth century
