Leibniz, Gottfried Wilhelm von
The German philosopher and mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz, b. July 1, 1646, d. Nov. 14, 1716, was a universal genius and a founder of modern science. He anticipated the development of symbolic LOGIC and, independently of Isaac Newton, invented the calculus with a superior notation, including the symbols for integration and differentiation. He expounded a theory of substance based on monads, which were metaphysical and animistically endowed points of force and perception. Leibniz also advocated Christian ecumenism in religion, codified Roman laws and introduced natural law in jurisprudence, propounded the metaphysical law of optimism (satirized by Voltaire in Candide) that our universe is the "best of all possible worlds," and transmitted Chinese thought to Europe. For his work, he is considered a progenitor of German idealism and a pioneer of the Enlightenment. Leibniz was the son of a professor of moral philosophy at Leipzig. A precocious youth, Leibniz taught himself Latin and some Greek by age 12 so that he might read the books in his father's library. From 1661 to 1666 he majored in law at the University of Leipzig. When refused admission to its doctoral program in law in 1666, he went to the University of Altdorf, which awarded him the doctorate in jurisprudence in 1667.

The thought of Leibniz represents a synthesis of Cartesian Rationalism and Aristotelio-Scholastic thought. The two problems that must be solved are always the same:

LEIBNITZ (LEIBNIZ), GOTTFRIED WILHELM (1646-1716), The next three years he devoted to legal studies, and in 1666 applied for the degree of doctor of law, with a view to obtaining the post of assessor. Being refused on the ground of his youth he left his native town for ever. The doctors degree refused him there was at once (November 5, 1666) conferred on him at Altdorfthe university town of the free city of Nuremberg where his brilliant dissertation procured him the immediate offer of a professors chair. This, however, he declined, having, as he said, very different things in view. Ihe policy of the elector, which the pen of Leibnitz was nov~ called upon to promote, was to maintain the security of the German empire, threatened on the west by the aggressive power of France, on the east by Turkey and Russia. Thus when in 1669 the crown of Poland became vacant, it fell to Leibnitz to support the claims of the German. candidate, which he did in his first political writing, Specimen demonstrationuni politicarum pro rege Polonorum eligendo, attempting, under the guise of a Catholic Polish nobleman, to show by mathematical demonstration that it was necessary in the interest of Poland that it should have the count palatine of Neuburg as its king. But neither the diplomatic skill of Boyneburg, who had been sent as plenipotentiary to the election at Warsaw, nor the arguments of Leibnitz were successful, and a Polish prince was elected to fill the vacant throne.

German mathematician, philosopher, and diplomat. Independently of, but concurrently with, English scientist Isaac Newton , he developed the branch of mathematics known as calculus and was one of the founders of symbolic logic. Free from all concepts of space and number, his logic was the prototype of future abstract mathematics. Calculus and controversy
It was in London in 1673 that Leibniz became acquainted with the work of Newton and Isaac Barrow and began to work on problems that led him to his independent discovery of differential and integral calculus. Leibniz is due the credit for first using the

German philosopher and mathematician who wrote extensively in favor of pluralism . He believed in a continuous gradation of life-forms from the simplest to creatures more advanced, physically, intellectually and spiritually, than ourselves. In his Essais de théodicée (1710), he spoke of God having created the "best of all possible worlds" - by "world" here meaning not simply the Earth but the Universe as a whole.
