Julia Kristeva is a world famous semiotician, feminist theorist, psychoanalyst and at the same time an interesting creative writer. She was born in Bulgaria in 1941, but came to Paris in 1965 where she became immersed in Parisian intellectual life. Her acclaimed novel "Les Samouïs" (1990) analyzes the Parisian intellectual avant-garde to which she has belonged ever since. An Interview with Julia Kristeva by Nina Zivancevici Parisian intellectual avant-garde to which she has belonged ever since. And though psychoanalysis remains one of the major orienting and formative dimensions of her work, especially as regards her reflections upon the nature of the feminine, she has also continued her research on the nature of language and examined the processes leading to the emergence of the work of art. As the theorist John Lechte points out, " because of the intimate link between art and the formation of subjectivity, Kristeva has always found art to be a particularly fruitful basis for analysis. " Since the 1960s, she has

When did the Berlin Wall come down? However much this event took us by surprise in the autumn of 1989 - indeed, no one foresaw either its rapidity or its consequences - I believe that the fissures in the wall began to be clearly felt in the early 1960s. A few unknown scholars - thinkers expressing disturbing ideas in hermetic idioms - were regrouping, like a colony of ants, to carry out subversive labors. Too complex for the already nascent media culture, their work was, of course, invisible from Paris or New York; but the masters of the Kremlin were not unaware of its undermining effects.
Yury Lotman was one of these scholars. Born 28 February 1922 in Petrograd, doctor of philology, professor at the University of Tartu, Estonia, this former student of Vladimir Propp became in 1964 the editor of Sign Systems Studies , a journal published by the University of Tartu. Established as the first Soviet structuralist with his book On the Delimitation of Linguistic and Philological Concepts of Structure (1963), Lotman published his

24. Trevor Pateman: "The Erotics Of Language"
A celebration of ungrammatical communication and linguistic playfulness, with reference to work of julia kristeva.

The Erotics of Language
Trevor Pateman
Abstract: An account of linguistic playfulness, linking the work of the poet back to the child's relation to sound and meaning. The work of Julia Kristeva is referenced for the approach developed here. In one of the most technical papers I have ever written, (published in my 1987 book Language in Mind and Language in Society ), I offer a detailed review of the arguments in David K Lewis's 1969 book Convention and claim that grammatical correction of someone's linguistic performance cannot be immediately justified by reference to the needs of communication. For it is only if we have understood what someone is trying to say that we can locate grammatical faults. If someone is struggling to express themself in a foreign language, they can only be put right linguistically when they have succeeded in communicating what it is they wish to say. The same argument can be made in relation to spelling correction, and teachers working with young children become adept at working out what is being said through the child's cryptograms, faced with which the rest of us declare incomprehension and cannot even begin the job of correction. Of course, a teacher's correction of a child's spelling makes the child intelligible to third parties, and the same is true for some grammatical correction. In this way, correction is mediately justifiable by reference to the needs of communication. Some opposition to linguistic privatisation can thus be justified by reference to common interests. Some repression of linguistic disorder, above the level which will spontaneously occur (through the operation of feedback mechanisms and so on), makes access possible to more optimal communicative states than are obtainable under conditions of linguistic free-for-all.

Extract from: "The Abject: Kristeva and the Antigone
Clifford Davis Julia Kristeva's theory of the abject provides an illuminating and interrogative hermeneutic technique for Sophocles' Antigone . Kristeva has demonstrated the applicability of this theory to the Theban saga (although, perhaps, with mixed results) in her reading of Sophocles's Oedipus Tyrranos and Oedipus at Colonus Her interpretation of Oedipus Tyrranos not only reinforces Lacanian psychoanalytical theory, but also situates the concept of the abject, as an extension of Lacan, within the ancient text as the agos , "defilement" of Oedipus. Kristeva argues that the new king, as agos , represents the source of the abject and embodies its purification as pharmakos : "scapegoat." The structural and thematic oppositions in the Antigone between patriarchal, institutional uniformity in the polis and the more antiquated, chthonic obligations of the heterogeneous dead mark this drama, too, as extraordinarily well-suited for reinterpretation as a confrontation between an archaic, Greek Symbolic and the abject. In this paper, I use Kristevan theory to elucidate and reinterpret the primary oppositions in Sophocles's Antigone and demonstrate how such a reading differs from the structuralist interpretations of C.W. Oudemans and J.P. Vernant.

Kristeva, Julia
Born in Bulgaria in 1941, Julia Kristeva went to Paris in 1966 to finish her dissertation on French literature; there she worked with Roland Barthes and Lucien Goldmann. By 1979 she had also completed her training in psychoanalysis. Her analytic practice has a significant influence on her writing of the 1980s. Tales of Love (1983) and Black Sun (1987), for example, include transcripts from her analytic sessions.
In her early writing Le Texte du roman Polylogue (1977)Kristeva is concerned to bring the speaking body back into Phenomenology and linguistics. In Revolution in Poetic Language she says that "our philosophies of Language, embodiments of the Idea, are nothing more than the thoughts of archivists, archaeologists, and necrophiliacs" (13). In order to counteract what she sees as the necrophilia of phenomenology and structural linguistics, which study a dead or silent body, Kristeva develops a new science that she calls "semanalysis." She describes semanalysis as a combination of semiology (or Semiotics ), which starts with

Developing her thought by merging various disciplines philosophy linguistics semiotics literary theory ... psychoanalysis Kristeva has continually sought to formulate new modes of critical discourse in order to reflect logic and reality differently. Her principal objects for analysis are modern or modernist (especially avant-garde ) literary texts. These preoccupations first emerged with her activities in conjunction with the Tel Quel group which she joined in , and which also included Roland Barthes Michel Foucault Marcelin Pleynet and Philippe Sollers . This period produced works such as Sèméiotikè: Recherches pour une sémanalyse Le Texte du roman: approche sémiologique d'une structure discursive transformationnelle ) and La Révolution du langage poétique: l'avant-garde à la fin du XIXè siècle ), a magisterial study of experiments in French poetic language in the late

34. Narcissus
An outline of the myth from julia kristeva's Tales of Love.
http://www.koolpages.com/almalaika/narcissus.html
Narcissus. Outline of the myth (from Julia Kristeva's Tales of Love
We are here confronted with what we can but call the vertigo of a love with no object other than a mirage. Ovid marvels, fascinated and terrified, at the sight of a twin aspect of the lure that will nevertheless continue to nourish the West's Psychological and intellectual life for centuries to come. On the one hand there is rapture at the sight of a non object, simple product of the eyes' mistake; on the other, there is the power of the image, "what you seek is nowhere. The vision is only shadow, only reflection, lacking any substance. It comes with you, it stays with you, it goes away with you, if you can go away."
One then witnesses an erotic scene between Narcissus and his double, all woven with impossible embraces, missed kisses, deluded contacts. With the eye, the mouth is the main organ of amorous longing, like the skin that is frustrated by a "thin film of water" that keeps them apart.
At last the moment of understanding is at hand. After many frustrations, Narcissus gathers that he is, actually, in a world of "signs": "You nod and beckon when I do, your lips, it seems, answer when I am talking though what you say I cannot hear." The exertion for deciphering leads him to knowledge, to self- knowledge. "He is myself! I feel it, I know myself now."
