Kristeva Glossary
  • symbolic - the domain of position and judgment, chronologically follows semiotic (post-Oedipal), is the establishment of a sign system, always present, historical time (linear), and creates repressed writing.
  • semiotic - the science of signs (that which creates the need for symbolic),cyclical through time, pre-Oedipal, and creates unrepressed writing. Exists in children before language acquisition and has significance.
  • semanalysis - word coined by Kristeva to differentiate her type of linguistic analysis which is a dissolving of the sign through critical analysis, avoids the text designing its own limits, and stresses the heterogeneity of language rather than homogeneity of conventional linguistic model.

Julia Kristeva is a world famous semiotician, feminist theorist, psychoanalyst and at the same time an interesting creative writer. She was born in Bulgaria in 1941, but came to Paris in 1965 where she became immersed in Parisian intellectual life. And though psychoanalysis remains one of the major orienting and formative dimensions of her work, especially as regards her reflections upon the nature of the feminine, she has also continued her research on the nature of language and examined the processes leading to the emergence of the work of art. As the theorist John Lechte points out, " because of the intimate link between art and the formation of subjectivity, Kristeva has always found art to be a particularly fruitful basis for analysis. " Since the 1960s, she has

Julia Kristeva , (b. Bulgaria, 1941), lives in Paris and writes in French on psychoanalysis, semiotics, and philosophy. Taking up the question of "Why do we speak?" in all of its ambiguities, Kristeva addresses the issues of the relationship of meaning to language, the relationship of meaning to life, and the relationship of language to life. In fact, Kristeva's most famous contribution to language theory, the distinction between the symbolic and the semiotic elements of signification, speaks to these questions in a revolutionary way, opening pathways rather than resigning us to an impasse.
Kristeva maintains that all signification is composed of two elements, the symbolic and the semiotic. The symbolic element is what philosophers might think of as referential meaning. That is, the symbolic is the element of signification that sets up the structures by which symbols operate. The symbolic is the structure or grammar that governs the ways in which symbols can refer. The semiotic element, on the other hand, is the organization of drives in language. It is associated with rhythms and tones that are meaningful parts of language and yet do not represent or signify something. In Revolution in Poetic Language (1974), Kristeva maintains that rhythms and tones do not represent bodily drives; rather bodily drives are discharged through rhythms and tones. In

    Julia Kristeva
    Summary of Major Themes
"Kristeva and Feminism" by Kelly Oliver Although Kristeva does not refer to her own writing as feminist, many feminists turn to her work in order to expand and develop various discussions and debates in feminist theory and criticism. Three elements of Kristeva's thought have been particularly important for feminist theory in Anglo-American contexts:
      1. Her attempt to bring the body back into discourses in the human sciences; 2. Her focus on the significance of the maternal and preoedipal in the constitution of subjectivity; and 3. Her notion of abjection as an explanation for oppression and discrimination.
The Body Theories of the body are particularly important for feminists because historically (in the humanities) the body has been associated with the feminine, the female, or woman, and denigrated as weak, immoral, unclean, or decaying. Throughout her writing over the last three decades, Kristeva theorized the connection between mind and body, culture and nature, psyche and soma, matter and representation, by insisting both that bodily drives are discharged in representation, and that the logic of signification is already operating in the material body. In New Maladies of the Soul, Kristeva describes the drives as "as pivot between 'soma' and psyche', between biology and representation" (30; see also Time and Sense). She is now famous for the distinction between what she calls the "semiotic" and the "symbolic," which she develops in her early work including Revolution in Poetic Language , "From One Identity to the Other" in Desire in Language, and Powers of Horror. Kristeva maintains that all signification is composed of these two elements. The semiotic element is the bodily drive as it is discharged in signification. The semiotic is associated with the rhythms, tones, and movement of signifying practices. As the discharge of drives, it is also associated with the maternal body, the first source of rhythms, tones, and movements for every human being since we all have resided in that body.

Julia Kristeva: the stranger's stranger
J ulia Kristeva's name is not a particularly familiar one here in Australasia but is widely recognised in Europe and America. In France, where Kristeva is a practising psychoanalyst and a professor in linguistics, she is regarded as an outstanding critic who has popular appeal as well, and her latest book which is an extensive study of Proust, has been highly praised by Le Monde . Julia Kristeva arrived in Paris from Bulgaria in 1964 and has made France her home ever since, apart from regular lecture commitments to New York's Columbia University. Beginning as a linguist and working alongside French semiotician Roland Barthes, Kristeva assimilated the work of Freud and Lacan, and became an analyst as well as an academic. Her published work is a daunting list of texts ranging from semiotics, literary criticism, psychoanalysis, philosophy, politics, theology, through to two semi-autobiographical novels. In recognition of her contribution to French intellectual culture, in 1990 she was honoured by the French government and made a "chevalier de l'ordre des arts et des lettres." Needless to say, her writing is densely allusive and difficult to read. For people approaching it for the first time, it is a daunting, frequently unrewarding experience. Anna Smith of the English Department has just published a book on Kristeva (

In his recent collection of Kristeva's interviews, Ross Mitchell Guberman gives us the opportunity to do just that, in a space that affords us, additionally, a fresh perspective on this theorists personal and intellectual developments.
