As with any piece of art or film (as well as many other things), every person is allowed to have their own interpretation of what a certain piece means. What is contained within this essay is simply opinion; I suggest you (the reader) go out and view the piece for yourself and come to your own conclusion about what the material means. Maybe you'll find that this essay is helpful in understanding the film, since for years I have tried to figure it out and only now have I developed a solid feeling about what it means. So, with this is mind, read on... There are many words which one can use to describe the condition of Alienation. "Despair", "nihilism", "nothingness", and "estrangement" are just a few of many which are commonly used to relate this feeling when you read selections with "existential" themes. However, sometimes images and sounds better communicate the actual experience to the outside observer. Written words sometimes have a tendency to be devoid of the necessary emotion to relate the event to those who wish to go more in depth. Many times the ability to observe Alienation through modern art and film allows individuals the chance to interact with and understand what exactly it means to be "alienated." In the short film Rehearsals for Extinct Anatomies , done by Stephen and Timothy Quay, one finds his or herself immersed in a surreal, discordant, filthy realm where decomposition is the principal decor and struggle for Authenticity is the primary objective. Through moving pictures, the Quay Brothers have managed to communicate the feeling of Alienation and discuss issues of Authenticity better than most existential writers ever could have done.

Svenska Søren Kierkegaard (Redirected from Soren Kierkegaard Søren Aabye Kierkegaard May 5 November 11 ), a 19th century Danish philosopher , has achieved general recognition as the father of existentialism though new research shows a more difficult connection between Kierkegaard and existentialism . Philosophically, he bridged the gap that existed between Hegelian philosophy and Existentialism. Kierkegaard strongly rejected both the Hegelian philosophy of his time, and what he saw as the empty formalities of the Danish church. Kierkegaard's work sometimes resists interpretation, since he wrote most of his early work under various pseudonyms, and often these pseudo-authors will comment on the works of the earlier pseudo-authors. Life Søren Kierkegaard was born to an affluent family in Copenhagen , the capital of Denmark . His father, Michael Pedersen Kierkegaard, was a strongly religious man. Convinced that he had earned God's wrath, he believed that none of his children would live to the age of 34 (Christ's age at crucifixion). The sins necessitating this punishment, he believed, included cursing the name of God in his youth, and possibly impregnating Kierkegaard's mother out of wedlock. In fact, his predictions were realized for all but two of his seven children. So strong was his father's conviction that Søren himself was surprised when he survived his 34th year.

Kierkegaard, Søren Aabye Ou bien ou bien (1843), décrit les deux sphères ou stades de l'existence qui s'offrent au choix de l'individu : le stade esthétique et le stade éthique. Le mode de vie esthétique constitue un hédonisme raffiné, consistant dans la recherche du plaisir et l'épanouissement du désir. Le mode de vie éthique est fondé sur un sentiment intense et passionné du devoir, des obligations inconditionnelles, sociales et religieuses. Dans ses œuvres tardives, comme les stades sur le chemin de la vie (1845), Kierkegaard discernait dans une telle soumission au devoir une perte de la responsabilité individuelle, et il envisageait un troisième stade, celui de la soumission à la volonté de Dieu : il définit le stade religieux comme celui de la liberté authentique. Dans Crainte et Tremblement (1843), Kierkegaard se concentre sur le commandement que Dieu fait à Abraham de sacrifier son fils Isaac (Genèse, XXII, 1-19), acte qui outrage les convictions éthiques d'Abraham. Pour prouver sa foi, celui-ci prend la résolution d'obéir au commandement de Dieu en dépit de son désarroi. Afin d'éviter le désespoir ultime, l'individu doit accomplir un « saut de la foi » similaire dans la vie religieuse, qui est par essence paradoxale, mystérieuse et pleine de risques. Are there times when we should at least try to believe in something? If it were easy to manipulate our own beliefs, low self-esteem would vanish, the divorce rate would decline, and over-consumption would disappear with the reminder: "I already have enough stuff." Yet there is something suspect about willed beliefs. Perhaps it is not ethically responsible to change beliefs without regard for the truth of the matter. And the epistemological coherence of the notion is questionable. Perhaps belief states are just not the kind of things that are under the influence of our will - analogous to the fact that we cannot decide to perceive blueness when looking at a red apple. This is an issue that has attracted some interest in the course of the history of thought. In this paper I will be looking into the views of a contemporary author who sees the relationship of willing to belief as an issue recurring thoughout the history of philosophy.
