Abd al-Rahman Ibn Mohammad is generally known as Ibn Khaldun after a remote ancestor. His parents, originally Yemenite Arabs, had settled in Spain, but after the fall of Seville, had migrated to Tunisia. He was born in Tunisia in 1332 A.D., where he received his early education and where, still in his teens, he entered the service of the Egyptian ruler Sultan Barquq. His thirst for advanced know- ledge and a better academic setting soon made him leave this service and migrate to Fez. This was followed by a long period of unrest marked by contemporary political rivalries affecting his career. This turbulent period also included a three year refuge in a small village Qalat Ibn Salama in Algeria, which provided him with the opportunity to write Muqaddimah , the first volume of his world history that won him an immortal place among historians, sociologists and philosophers. The uncertainty of his career still continued, with Egypt becoming his final abode where he spent his last 24 years. Here he lived a life of fame and respect, marked by his appointment as the Chief Malakite Judge and lecturing at the AL-Azhar University, but envy caused his removal from his high judicial office as many as five times.
Ibn Khaldun's chief contribution lies in philosophy of history and sociology. He sought to write a world history preambled by a first volume aimed at an analysis of historical events. This volume, commonly known as

The concept of civil society has generated competing definitions for many
centuries. Large numbers of authors have joined the intellectual fray by
positing their own definitions for just what "civil society" means. Few of
these authors, however, have been in exact accordance as to the specific
criteria that represent a civil society. What one author finds beneficial
for the preservation of a civil society another sees as totally inimical
to civil society. Two thinkers with often divergent but sometimes si milar
conceptualizations of civil society are thirteenth-century Arab
"philosopher of history" Ibn Khaldun and modern day America's Robert
Putnam. While these two writers share many beliefs in common about what

ON TASAWWUF Ibn Khaldun (d. 808)
Ibn Khaldun said in his famous Muqaddima
Tasawwuf is one of the latter-day sciences of the Law in the Islamic Community. The foundation of tasawwuf, however, is (more ancient, as seen in the fact) that these folk and their way have always been present among the Salaf and among the most senior of the Companions and the Successors, and their way is the way of truth and guidance.
The foundation of the way of the Sufis is self-restraint in the world and utter dependence on Allah; shunning of the adornment and beauty of the world; self-deprivation of pleasure, money, and title in the manner agreed upon by the vast majority of the scholars; and isolation from creatures in seclusion and devotion to worship. All these aspects were widespread among the Companions and the Salaf, but with the pervasiveness of worldliness in the second century and the next, and the general inclination of the people towards the world, those who remained attached to worship became know under the name of Sufis. “…. (Ibn Khaldun wrote) a philosophy of history which is undoubtedly the greatest work of its kind that has ever yet been created by any mind in any time or place," Arnold Toynbee It is more than shameful that until the 19th century the Muslims had forgotten one of their greatest intellectual and historian and that he was "discovered" by Orientalists. Ibn Khaldun was not only one of the greatest historians of the Islamic world but one of the greatest geniuses of all time. It will not be wrong to say that most of the histories before Ibn Khaldun were basically chronicles about the events of their times. For the first time in history Ibn Khaldun set out to discover the underlying ‘laws’ in the rise and fall of nations emphasizing on the sociological factors in the dynamics of human society. He correctly pointed out that societies are held together by social solidarity and religion. Ibn Khaldun is best known for his Muqaddimah or Prolegomena.

Introduction
Abu Zaid ibn Mahommed ibn Mahommed ibn Khaldun was born in 1332 CE in Tunis. He studied various branches of Arabic learning and held high positions in Tunis, Granada, Fez, and Cairo, where he became a judge of Muslim law in 1384 CE. At this time a ship containing Ibn Khaldun's wife, children, and all of his property was wrecked, with no survivors. These were volatile times and he was repeatedly removed from his position and subsequently reinstated. There were intrigues against him in both Tunis and Granada. Ibn Khaldun was thrown into prison at one time, at another he raised a large force in Tunis against the desert Arabs. In 1400 CE he was sent to Damascus with an expedition to oppose the Mongolian conqueror, Tamerlane. After the expedition failed, Tamerlane permitted Ibn Khaldun to return to Egypt, where he died in 1406 CE. Ibn Khaldun wrote A Universal History , which deals primarily with the history of the Arabs of Spain and Africa. In his introduction, he puts forward his views on the science of history and the development of society. Extracts are given below. Here we see not only how an original historian invents his calling, but also how unstable societies can be when newly founded by nomads taking up a permanent residence. For Ibn Kahaldun

Ibn Khaldun
Abu Zayd 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Khaldun al-Hadrami May 27 /ah732 to March 19 /ah808) was a famous Arab historiographer, historian and proto-sociologist. Born at Tunis , Ibn Khaldun studied the various branches of Arabic learning with great success. In 1352 he obtained employment under the Marlnid sultan Abu ban (Fans I) at Fez . In the beginning of 1356, his integrity having been suspected, he was thrown into prison until the death of Abu man in 1358, when the vizier al-Hasan ibn Omar set him at liberty and reinstated him in his rank and offices. He here continued to render great service to Abu Salem (Ibrahim III), Abu man's successor, but, having offended the prime minister, he obtained permission to emigrate to Spain . Ibn al Ahmar, who had been greatly indebted to his good offices when an exile at the court of Abu Salem, received Ibn Khaldun with great cordiality at Granada . The favours he received from the sovereign excited the jealousy of the vizier, and he was driven back to Africa (1364), where the sultan of Bougie, Abu Abdallafi, who had been formerly his companion in prison, received him with great cordiality. On the fall of Abu Abdallah, Ibn Khaldun raised a large force amongst the desert Arabs, and entered the service of the sultan of

Some Quotes from Works by Ibn Khaldun
" In the early stages of the state, taxes are light in their incidence, but fetch in a large revenue...As time passes and kings succeed each other, they lose their tribal habits in favor of more civilized ones. Their needs and exigencies grow...owing to the luxury in which they have been brought up. Hence they impose fresh taxes on their subjects...[and] sharply raise the rate of old taxes to increase their yield...But the effects on business of this rise in taxation make themselves felt. For business men are soon discouraged by the comparison of their profits with the burden of their taxes...Consequently production falls off, and with it the yield of taxation.
