Home Knowledge History of Islâm ... Later Scholars Ibn Khaldun IBN KHALDUN (1332 - 1395. A.D.) Apart from the Muqaddimah that became an important independent book even during the lifetime of the author, the other volumes of his world history Kitab al-I'bar deal with the history of Arabs, contemporary Muslim rulers, contemporary European rulers, ancient history of Arabs, Jews, Greeks, Romans, Persians, etc., Islamic History, Egyptian history and North-African history, especially that of Berbers and tribes living in the adjoining areas. The last volume deals largely with the events of his own life and is known as Al-Tasrif. This was also written in a scientific manner and initiated a new analytical tradition in the art of writing autobiography. A book on mathematics written by him is not extant. Ibn Khaldun's influence on the subject of history, philosophy of history, sociology, political science and education has remained paramount ever since his life. His books have been translated into many languages, both in the East and the West, and have inspired subsequent development of these sciences. For instance, Prof. Gum Ploughs and Kolosio consider Muqaddimah as superior in scholarship to Machiavelli's The Prince written a century later, as the former bases the diagnosis more on cultural, sociological, economic and psychological factors. Ibn Khaldun (1332-1406) "Whoever takes someone's property, or uses him for forced labor, or presses an unjustified claim upon him. It should be known that this is what the Lawgiver had in mind when he forbade injustice."

Terminology: Ibn Khaldun
Every famous authority has his or her terminology, says Ibn Khaldun. If technical terminology was part of science, it would have been the same for all scholars. It should therefore not be large in variety. Because this may harm the human quest for knowledge. Technical terminology should be based on what is generally accepted, so that the inherent meaning comes out correctly. Language is a habit of the tongue. Its purpose is to express ideas. What we mean must therefore agree with what we wish to express.
Ibn Khaldun had to invent many new concepts for his science of al- c umraan. Most of them are dichotomous. They have an inherent meaning, which conveys commonly accepted ideas, when they stand alone. But they also expresse specific ideas when in construct form. Thus the concept of " al- c umraan " expresses the idea of social prosperity when it stands alone. But when composed with ordinal numbers, as for instance, "

Ibn Khaldun and Education Dr Fahri Kayadibi
The author is Associate Professor Ilahiyat Fakultesi, Istanbul University, Beyazit, Istanbul, Turkey. Introduction
The great thinker Ibn Khaldun was born in Tunis, 1332 AD and died in Cairo, 1406 AD. His ideas have reflected their importance on the history of universal thought as much as within the Islamic realm. His thoughts are all self-created. He has been affected by savants before him but he is not a continuation of them. He created genuine and innovative ideas. It is due to this fact that although he lived during the 14th century his thoughts still manage to shed light among events of current times. His ideas have not lost their relevance as time has passed. Recognized as the founder of sociological sciences, Ibn Khaldun has been accepted and commented upon by historians, jurists, theologians, politicians, economists, teachers, educators and environmentalists alike. Ibn Khaldun’s great work of art, The Muqaddimah has been translated into the world’s most common languages.
Here, we shall try to enumerate his education-teaching views which shed light on current educational systems and consequently provide a text from which we may take benefit.

http://membres.lycos.fr/majed/personnages/khaldun/khaldun.html

A HISTORY OF IPE THOUGHT AMONG EARLY WRITERS
IBN KHALDUN (1332-1406)

Ibn Khaldun's concepts of population dynamics, human resource development, skill diversification and societal transformation together with the importance of governance, are the combination of statecraft with the economic order, which comprises well an empirical though not a conceptual approach to the study of political economy. In this sense, Ibn Khaldun link with epistemological questions of political economy, hence the characterization of what is an Islamic political economy and to suggest ways and means of integrating the Islamic state towards promoting the conditions amenable to the establishment of Islamic political economy, remained totally absent in Ibn Khaldun's writings. In Schumpeter's terminology, Ibn Khaldun may be characterized as a relativist rather than an absolutist in political economic thought.
Beyond this even, there does not appear in Ibn Khaldun any abiding philosophy of historicism, according to which the underlying and not simply the outer symptoms of rise and decline of civilizations can be studied. For example, The setbacks of so many Islamic movements in the hands of Occidental Powers since a long time now, cannot be assigned to the condition of enervation of the spirit. The check of the Muslim advance to the precints of France when it was finally stopped by Charles Martel in one of the most decisive battles, the battle of Tours, cannot be explained by the type of historical empiricism provided of Ibn Khaldun. The permanent continuity of Islam as the historical force over time, in spite of the setbacks that Muslims have experienced, cannot be explained by Ibn Khaldun's historical empiricism.
