Kant's Moral Philosophy
sui generis Kant's most influential positions are found in The Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals Groundwork The Critique of Practical Reason The Metaphysics of Morals Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View and Religion within the Boundaries of Mere Reason . I will focus on the foundational doctrines of the Groundwork , even though in recent years some scholars have become dissatisfied with this standard approach to Kant's views and have turned their attention to the later works. I myself still find the standard approach most illuminating, though I will highlight important positions from the later works where needed.

Kant, Immanuel (1724-1804)
Great German philosopher, best known for his Critique of Pure Reason , who played an important part in the extraterrestrial life debate of the eighteenth century and in enlarging man's conception of the physical universe. The young Kant was strongly influenced by Thomas Wright 's speculations about life on other worlds and on the nature of the Milky Way. By 1755, in his Universal Natural History and Theory of the Heavens , he set out his revolutionary claims that the Milky Way was an optical effect due to our location within a large disk of stars, and that the fuzzy patches known as nebulas were, in reality, other Milky Ways (external galaxies). He also put forward an early version of the nebular hypothesis (later developed by LaPlace ), though he applied this generally, to the Milky Way and to the universe as a whole, not just to planetary systems. On more metaphysical matters, Kant took the proponents of natural theology to task for seeking evidence of God's design in every detail of the cosmos. For him, the best evidence for God was the underlying lawfulness of the universe: "There is a God precisely because nature can proceed even in chaos in no other way than regularly and orderly." His speculations, in

and of Jean-Jacques Rousseau 's sensibility for the moral law; his concept of the nature of a philosophical critique deepens in many ways the principles of method outlined in the Discourse on Method by Descartes, and his elaboration of the principles of practical reason sharpens the moral critique made by Rousseau. He was at the same time one of the most important predecessors of G. W. F. Hegel , whose much-discussed criticism of him marks the beginning of Kant's controversial philosophical reception.
Within the eighteenth century, Kant was a pivotal figure. He is regarded as a paragon of Enlightenment rationalism who set in place for later generations of literary critics a series of presuppositions about the autonomy of artworks, while his commitment to the ideals of freedom, to the notion of things-in-themselves, and to the concept of genius positions him squarely within the idealist branch of Romanticism. Today, Kant is recognized as the author of three of the most important works of modern philosophy: the Critique of Pure Reason

Kant, Immanuel (1724-1804)
Prussian philosopher. Kant is considered to be the paradigmatic philosopher of the Modern era, removing the last traces of scholasticism from philosophy in the eighteen century. He agreed with the rationalists that one can have exact and certain knowledge, but he followed the empiricists in holding that such knowledge is more informative about the structure of thought than about the world outside of thought. He distinguished three kinds of knowledge: analytical a priori, which is exact and certain but uninformative, because it makes clear only what is contained in definitions; synthetic a posteriori, which conveys information about the world learned from experience, but is subject to the errors of the senses; and synthetic a priori, which is discovered by pure intuition and is both exact and certain, for it expresses the necessary conditions that the mind imposes on all objects of experience. Mathematics and philosophy, according to Kant, provide this last type. Related Topics: Philosophy Contributed by: Richard P Whaite Search for Kant, Immanuel (1724-1804)

About the Author
Although he is often associated with the Enlightenment, Kant had strong reservations about the philosophical foundations of most Enlightenment theories of morality and human understanding. He was particularly dissatisfied with the notions of reason and natural law that his contemporaries persistently propounded. He sought to transcend the limits of these ideas by bridging the philosophical gap between Continental idealism and English empiricism in his most famous treatise

115. IMMANUEL KANT
kant, immanuel (17241804), German philosopher, was born at KOnigsberg on the 22nd of April 1724. His grandfather and t. immanuel kant.

IMMANUEL KANT
KANT, IMMANUEL In 1755 Kant became tutor in the family of Count Kayserling. By the kindness of a friend named Richter, he was enabled to resume his university career, and in the autumn of that year he graduated as doctor and qualified as privatdocent. For fifteen years he continued to labor in this position, his fame as writer and lecturer steadily increasing. Though twice he failed to obtain a professorship at Konigsberg, he steadily refused appointments elsewhere. The only academic preferment received by him during the lengthy probation was the post of underlibrarian (1766). His lectures, at first mainly upon physics, gradually expanded until nearly all descriptions of philosophy were included under them. In 1770 he obtained the chair of logic and metaphysics at Konigsberg, and delivered as his inaugural address the dissertation De mundi sensibilis et intelligibilis forma et principiis. Eleven years later appeared the Kritik of Pure Reason, the work towards which he had been steadily advancing, and of which all his later writings are developments. In 1783 he published the Prolegomena, intended as an introduction to the Kritik, which had been found to stand in need of some explanatory comment. A second edition of the Kritilt, with some modifications, appeared in 1787, after which it remained unaltered. Kants reading was of the most extensive and miscellaneous kind. He cared comparatively little for the history of speculation, but his acquaintance with books of science, general history, travels and belles Iettres was boundless. He was well versed in English literature, chiefly of the age of Queen Anne, and had read English philosophy from Locke to flume, and the Scottish school,. He was at home in Voltaire and Rousseau, but had little or no acquaintance with the French sensational philosophy. He was familiar with all German literature up to the date of his Kr-itik, but ceased to follow it in its great development by Goethe and Schiller. It was his habit to obtain books in sheets from his publishers Kanter and Nicolovius; and he read over for many years all the new works in their catalogue, in order to keep abreast of universal knowledge. He was fond of newspapers and works on politics; and this was the only kind of reading that could interrupt his studies in philosophy.
