ALEXANDRIA REVIEW
March 415 Issue 75
AR: What kind of influence did your father have on your development in the field of mathematics?
H: My father aspired to immerse me in the knowledge of many areas of study, from mathematics and science to languages, arts, and the humanities. But he also made sure that I was a well-rounded child physically and intellectually. He raised me to believe that I could achieve any goal to which I set my mind.
AR:
Hypatia: Yes I agree. But a society dominated by men does not intimidate me. I have mastered many tasks that are thought to be purely male, such as swimming, rowing, horseback riding, speech, mountain climbing, and even traveling.
AR: Travel? Where have you traveled?
Hypatia: My father sent me to Athens when he thought I had learned as much as I could here in
Alexandria. He sent me to Athens first because it is thought to be the mathematical center of the world. I learned so much there and went on to travel throughout Europe for ten years. AR : And were you not afraid to travel without a male companion?

Hypatia was a Greek mathematician who lived in Alexandria, the center of Greek intellectual life. She was born there around 370 and was killed in March of 415. Hypatia was the first woman mathematician to have significantly contributed to mathematics. Here is an interview with her conducted shortly before her death.
Q. We hear that your father, Theon, is a distinguished mathematician and a philosopher. How has he influenced you?
A . My father has had a tremendous impact on my life as a mathematician and as a person. He guided me in every aspect of my life, from education to the betterment of my body and mind. Every day during my childhood, I performed several types of exercises in order to ensure a healthy body and an inquisitive mind. My father taught me about the different religions and taught me the power of
words. He shared his knowledge with me and inspired me to search for the answers to the unknown
especially in astronomy and astrology.

So, You're Curious About Hypatia....
Hypatia of Alexandria (approx. AD 370 - 415) was the daughter of the mathematician Theon. She was a mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher (a prominent proponent of Neoplatonism) who became famous throughout the the eastern Mediterranean, and had a great number of students. She was an attractive woman as well, and had many male friends, although she rejected her suitors (I understand she had a revulsion for the physical aspects of love, although I haven't read the material cited for this). One of her more famous devotees was Synesius of Cyrene, bishop of Ptolemais in Libya. She became the Librarian of Alexandria (the Library of Alexandria was considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) and wrote commentaries on Apollonius' work on conic sections (geometry) and Diophantus (simple and quadratic equations, and early algebraic thought), as well as revising the third book of her father's Commentary on the Almagest (a commentary on Ptolemy's book series on astronomy). When she reached middle age, Cyril (Saint Cyril) became the new Patriarch of Alexandria (a very high position in the Christian hierarchy of the times). He apparently had spent his early training with a rather virulent sect of Christian monks, and shortly after taking office, he kicked out another Christian sect on grounds of heresy. Later, he led a mob in destroying the homes and businesses of the Alexandrian Jewish community. The prefect of Egypt, Orestes, a friend of Hypatia, criticized Cyril for these acts; Cyril summoned his friends from the sect (the monks of Nitria) to act as his personal army. Cyril spread it about that the prefect was being corrupted by his friendship with this unclean Pagan woman.

Legend and history. Prof. Dzielska unravels the real life and murder of Hypatia.
Instead of the legendary young virgin martyr for paganism, she sketches a, for the period, remarkable older woman and teacher of neoplatonism and tolerance.
Her murder was instigated by the vicious ploys of a jealous catholic archbishop and executed by his ignorant mob. It was a political murder. This book should be read because it treats of an age-old conflict that still rages in the world today: the power struggle between the civil (secular) and religious authorities. This small work is a difficult (based on very few original sources), but very convincing reconstitution of the life of one of the very few known remarkable women of that age. A revealing work. Female Socrates Socrates was executed by the state of Athens as a scapegoat for its defeat by the Spartans. His crime was being a free thinker in a short age of turmoil. He was however fondly remembered and documented. Hypatia was first brought to my attention by Carl Sagan in his television series Cosmos. She has often been represented as a pillar of wisdom in an age of growing dogma. Unlike with Socrates we know much less about her life and teachings. She is remembered precisely as a martyr who was sacrificed rather than executed by a literalist Christian mob inspired by "St" Cyril, apparently as she was regarded as a threat to Christendom and theology by certain regio-political figures. Enough material on her survived not least owing to the strong memories evoked at the manner of her despatch which turned her into a historical icon.

Maria Dzielska, translated by F. Lyra. Harvard University Press, Cambridge 1995. viii+157pp. ISBN 0-674-43775-6 (cloth). $29.95. From: AWM Newsletter, May/June 1996. Reviewed by: Marge Murray, Book Review Editor, Department of Mathematics, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA 24061-0123; email: murray@calvin.math.vt.edu In March of 1994, the American Mathematical Monthly published an excellent article by Michael Deakin ([1]) dealing with the life and legend, but most importantly with the mathematics, of Hypatia of Alexandria, the first woman mathematician for whom we have documentary evidence. Taken together with Maria Dzielska's new biographical treatment, Hypatia of Alexandria , published this fall by Harvard University Press, it is possible to construct a fairly complete picture of Hypatia: her life and times; her work as a teacher, mathematician, philosopher, and religious and political figure; and the circumstances of her violent death. While Hypatia's murder was the misogynist act of a Christian mob, Dzielska's book makes it clear that it is misleading to portray Hypatia's death as the violent defeat of the female and non-Christian by the male and Christian. Christian men were at least as numerous among the supporters and admirers of Hypatia as among her opponents. It is probably more instructive to draw parallels to life in modern Belfast, Beirut, or even Sarajevo (as Deakin is inclined to do in [1], page 236), than to portray her death as the result of a sharply delineated ideological or religious conflict.

Explanation:
Sixteen hundred years ago, Hypatia became one of the world's leading scholars in mathematics and astronomy. Hypatia 's legendary knowledge, modesty, and public speaking ability flourished during the era of the Great Library of Alexandria Hypatia is credited with contributions to geometry and astrometry , and she is thought instrumental in the development of the sky-measuring astrolabe . "Reserve your right to think, for even to think wrongly is better than not to think at all," Hypatia is credited with saying. "To teach superstitions as truth is a most terrible thing."
