Beginnings
He is thought to have been born at Drumalig, in the parish of Saintfield, County Down Northern Ireland . Though the family had originated from Ayrshire Scotland , both his father and grandfather were ministers of dissenting congregations in the north of Ireland. Hutcheson was educated partly by his grandfather, partly at an academy, where according to his biographer, Dr Leechman, he was taught "the ordinary scholastic philosophy which was in vogue in those days." In he entered the University of Glasgow , where he spent six years, at first in the study of philosophy, classics and general literature, and afterwards in the study of theology On leaving university, he returned to northern Ireland, and received a licence to preach. When, however, he was about to enter upon the pastorate of a small dissenting congregation he changed his plans on the advice of a friend and opened a private academy in Dublin. In Dublin his literary attainments gained him the friendship of many prominent inhabitants. Among these was Archbishop William King (author of the De origine mali ), who refused to prosecute Hutcheson in the archbishop's court for keeping a school without the episcopal licence. Hutcheson's relations with the clergy of the Established Church, especially with the archbishops of Armagh and Dublin, Hugh Boulter and

senso interno ”.

Francis Hutcheson
Francis Hutcheson was born on 8 August 1694 in the north of Ireland. The son of a Presbyterian minister whose own father was an emigrant from Scotland, he entered the University of Glasgow in 1710, and took his MA in 1712. Hutcheson returned to Ireland in 1718 where he was licensed as a minister and accepted an invitation to start a dissenting academy in Dublin, where he remained for the next ten years. In1725 he published his best-known work , An Inquiry into the Original of our Ideas of Beauty and Virtue , revised editions of which appeared in 1726, 1729 and 1738. In 1728, he completed An Essay on the Nature and Conduct of the Passions and Affections. With Illustrations upon the Moral Sense ,  which was issued in a revised form in 1742. The widespread interest these works generated led to Hutcheson's being elected Professor of Moral Philosophy at Glasgow in 1729. He had great impact as a teacher, Adam Smith among others recording warm affection for the "never to be forgotten Dr Hutcheson".  In the late 1730s and 1740s, Hutcheson met and corresponded with Hume, who presented some challenging criticism of his work. Hutcheson in turn stimulated the development of Hume's philosophical position but he did not support his bid for a professorship at Edinburgh in 1745. In 1742 his Philosophiae moralis institutio compendiaria

Frances Hutcheson
Philosopher and Teacher
Francis Hutcheson was born in the townland of Drumalig, Saintfield Parish on 8 August 1694, the son and grandson of ministers of dissenting congregations. Educated partly by his grandfather, partly at an academy, he entered the University of Glasgow in 1710, where he spent six years, at first in the study of philosophy, classics and general literature, and afterwards in the study of theology. Hutcheson received his license to preach within the Presbyterian church in 1716. However, some controversy about his appointment to a congregation in Scotland persuaded him to abandon the ministry and begin a life of academia. He spent the early part of his academic career teaching at the Academy of Dublin, while he privately pursued his philosophical studies. In 1725 his name became well known within influential academic circles with the publication of his Inquiry into the Original of our Ideas of Beauty and Virtue In 1729 he accepted the Chair of Moral Philosophy at the University of Glasgow. He remained at the University of Glasgow until his death, during a visit to Dublin, in 1746.
