David Hume (1711-1776)
Writings on Religion
David Hume ranks among the most influential philosophers in the field of the philosophy of religion. He criticised the standard proofs for God's existence, traditional notions of God's nature and divine governance, the connection between morality and religion, and the rationality of belief in miracles. He also advanced theories on the origin of popular religious beliefs, grounding such notions in human psychology rather than in rational argument or divine revelation. The larger aim of his critique was to disentangle philosophy from religion and thus allow philosophy to pursue its ends without either rational over-extension or psychological corruption. Although we find religious themes throughout Hume's publications, the discussion here are largely restricted to six items: (1) "Of Miracles", (2) "Of a Particular Providence and of a Future State", (3) "The Natural History of Religion", (4) Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion , (5) "Of Suicide", and, (6) "Of the Immortality of the Soul."

By 1980, power and formal leadership had gradually shifted to Deng Xiaoping and his supporters. Hua remains a member of the Central Committee (as at December 2003). Hume, David (1711-1776) Scottish philosopher (scepticism), psychologist and historian; held that task of knowledge is not to comprehend being, but to provide a guide to practical life (utilitarianism); the only objects of authentic knowledge could be mathematics since no other relations can be deduced by logic, but only from experience, which was after all only a "stream of impressions" whose causes are essentially unknowable. He held that the repeated occurrence of one event prior to another can form the basis for the formation of conceptual knowledge, but cannot constitute proof of cause-and-effect - "how do we know that the Sun will rise in the East tomorrow?" - but nevertheless knowledge can provide sufficient certainty to constitute the basis of practical life. Thus Hume attempted to rescue the positive content of Locke's philosophy from the subjectivist critique of Berkeley . See Hegel on Hume's contribution David Hume lived in the constitutional monarchy of George II under the Prime Ministers Walpole, Pelham and Pitt, a Britain which had thoroughly established a stable bourgeois system of government and was interested in building its Empire. Hume died in the year of the American War of Independence.

DAVID HUME
HUME, DAVID (1711-1776), English philosopher, historian and political economist, was born at Edinburgh, on the 26th of April (O.S.) 1711. His father, Joseph flume or Home, a scion of the noble house of Home of Douglas (but see jVotes and Queries, 4th ser. iv. 72), was owner of a small estate in Berwickshire, on the banks of the ~Vhiteadder, called, from the spring rising in front of the dwelling-house, Ninewells. David was the youngest of a family of three, two sons and a daughter, who after the early death of the father were brought up with great care and devotion by their mother, the daughter of Sir David Falconer, president of the college of justice. corrupt and polluted, but the present evil phenomena are rectijied in other regions and in some future period of existence. Such a view satisfies neither of his interlocutors. Cleanthes, pointing out that from a nature thoroughly evil we can never prove the existence of an infinitely powerful and benevolent Creator, hazards the conjecture that the deity, though all-benevolent, is not all-powerful. Philo, however, pushing his principles to their full consequences, shows that unless we assumed (Or knew) beforehand that the system of nature was the work of a benevolent but limited deity, we certainly could not, from the facts of nature, infer the benevolence of its creator. Cleanthess view is, therefore, an hypothesis, and in no sense an inference. The Dialogues ought here to conclude. There is, however, appended one of those perplexing statements of personal opinion (for Hume declares Cleanthes to be his mouthpiece) not uncommon among writers of this period. Cleanthes and Philo come to an agreement, in admitting a certain illogical force in the a posteriori argument, or, at least, in expressing a conviction as to Gods existence, which may not perhaps be altogether devoid of foundation. The precise value of such a declaration must be matter of conjecture. Probably the true statement of Humes attitude regarding the problem is the somewhat melancholy utterance with which the Dialogues close.

THE NATURAL HISTORY OF RELIGION david hume 1757 5/1/95 Copyright 1995, James Fieser (jfieser@utm.edu). See end note for details
http://www.class.uidaho.edu/mickelsen/texts/Hume-Nat Hist Rel.txt
first appeared in 1757 in a collection of essays titled . The work may be topically divided into three parts. The first part (sections 1 and 4) argues that polytheism, and not monotheism, was the original religion of primitive humans. Monotheism was only a later development. The second part (sections 2-3, 5-8) establishes the psychological principles which give rise to religious belief. His thesis is that natural instincts such as fear are the true cause of popular religious belief, and not rational argument. The third part of this work (sections 9-15) compares various aspects of polytheism with monotheism showing that one is no more superior than the other. Both contain points of absurdity. From this he concludes that we should suspend belief on the entire subject. The was published seven additional times during Hume's life, each edition incorporating minor variations. The posthumous 1777 edition is followed here, which includes Hume's final alterations. Hume's bibliographical references to Greek and Latin classics have been expanded and clarified without brackets. Bibliographical references have not been expanded for those seventeenth and eighteenth-century works which have no modern editions. For more detailed introductory comments and annotations to this text, see . We are placed in this world, as in a great theatre, where the true springs and causes of every event are entirely concealed from us; nor have we either sufficient wisdom to foresee, or power to prevent those ills, with which we are continually threatened. We hang in perpetual suspence between life and death, health and sickness, plenty and want; which are distributed amongst the human species by secret and unknown causes, whose operation is oft unexpected, and always unaccountable. The Leeds Hume Project
This is a new web project co-ordinated by Peter Millican, Director of the Leeds Electronic Text Centre and a keen Hume scholar. Starting in May 2000, the aim of the project is to provide a permanent resource for scholars and students wishing to have access, free of charge , to high quality texts of works by, and associated with, the great philosopher and historian David Hume, together with relevant bibliographic materials
  • A Permanent Resource
The texts published here are intended to be in a finished state (with any future revisions being fully documented), and to remain available from the site www.etext.leeds.ac.uk/hume/ on a permanent basis. Hence - in contrast to most other Web resources - they may safely be referenced in academic works with confidence that future readers will remain able to consult them. Free of Charge
    Reliable Texts

Historical texts will be placed on this site only if they have been thoroughly checked against original sources, the aim being to provide 100% accuracy in the text, including spelling, punctuation, capitalisation etc. The 1777 text of the Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding presented here is, as far as can be ascertained, the only major Hume text available on the Web which even approaches this standard of accuracy.
