The James Willard Oliver David Hume Collection
David Hume, portrait by Allan Ramsay ("the Younger"), 1754
  • This collection includes both early editions of works by the Scottish philosopher David Hume (1711-1776), and extensive holdings of scholarship about his life and thought. The items below have been chosen to indicate the range of older material in the Oliver Collection, but represent only a small portion of its total holdings. Individual titles are cataloged in the library's on-line catalogue USCAN. The collection was formed by Prof. James Willard Oliver (1912-2001). Prof. Oliver (Ph.D. Harvard 1949) taught at the University of Florida and at the University of Southern California before moving to the University of South Carolina in 1964, as Professor and first Head of the new Department of Philosophy. Through Professor Oliver's generosity, his Hume collection was transferred to the University in 1997. In the following years, Prof. Oliver also transferred his substantial collections of works by and about Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) and of modern American logic, notably the logic of of W. V. Quine (1908-2000), with whom Prof. Oliver had worked at Harvard.

28. Empirisme - Hume
Antecedents de l'empirisme (Occam, Bacon i Hobbes) i fil²sofs empiristes.
http://alcoberro.info/Hume.htm

Publications Books: A Treatise on Human Nature Essays Moral and Political , 2 vols (1741-2, 1912, 1963); 3. An Inquiry Concerning Human Understanding Political Discourses History of England , 3 vols (1754-62, 1894); 6. Writings on Economics , ed. E. Rotwein (1955).
Career Primarily known as a philosopher, he also wrote substantial histories, and in his essays dealt with political, sociological and economic topics. All these fields were illuminated by his basic philosophy which involved the analysis of human nature and the examination of the way in which environmental forces act on that nature to produce particular forms of behaviour. The economic essays chiefly deal with money, trade and taxes and have a quality that still makes them refreshing to read. On such topics as monetary theory, international trade and population growth, he was not equalled even by Adam Smith , a close friend on whom he had an enormous influence.

31. Dye, Hume And The American Deists On Miracles
Essay by James Dye discusses david hume's influence on the Deism of Ethan Allen, Thomas Paine, and Elihu Palmer.
http://sun.soci.niu.edu/~phildept/Dye/Miracles.html
Enquiry concerning Human Understanding E the History of England , his reputation as a notorious infidel clearly stemmed from the Natural History of Religion and the Enquiry concerning Human Understanding Part I ad hoc , case-by-case route to their goal. Further, the cases considered were normally those which were most at issue, namely those pertaining to the foundations of Christianity. More importantly, these are only examples, not the actual targets of the critique. His argument comprises two parts. The first is an epistemological analysis of the criteria for rational assent to any possibly true. The second part is a more or less empirical survey of the historical conditions which prevent actual miracle reports from satisfying the criteria established in the first part. E Divines law , i.e. that it holds in all cases, including this one? moral law; and almost all instances of his using the term to refer to physical Enquiry E impossibility of miracles. seeming E A miracle may be accurately defined, a transgression of a law of nature by a particular volition of the Deity, or by the interposition of some invisible agent. A miracle may either be discoverable by men or not. This alters not its nature and essence. (ibid.)

. When pre-release copies of provoked controversy among influential readers, Hume and his printer Andrew Millar agreed to have the two essays physically removed from the printed copies. They were replaced with an essay titled "Of the Standard of Taste," and the book of essays appeared in 1757 under the title . Rumors about the two withdrawn essays circulated for years, and clandestine copies appeared anonymously in French (1770) and later in English (1777). In 1783 the two essays were published more openly, and this time with Hume's name attached. Like the 1770 and 1777 publications, the 1783 publication was not authorized by Hume. Along with Hume's two essays, the anonymous editor of the 1783 edition included his own critical notes to Hume's two pieces, and excerpts from Rousseau's on the subject of suicide. The contents, then, of the 1883 publication are as follows: Preface p. iii Essay I. On Suicide (Hume) p. 1 Essay II. On the immortality of the soul (Hume) p. 23 Anti-Suicide (anonymous editor) p. 39 Immortality of the Soul (anonymous editor) p. 53 Letter 114 from Rousseau's p. 67 Letter 115 from Rousseau's

35. George Berkeley [Internet Encyclopedia Of Philosophy]
A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge. An important work in the history of empiricism and idealism, and a string influence on david hume. Full text online.
http://www.utm.edu/research/iep/b/berkeley.htm
George Berkeley (1685-1753) George Berkeley was one of the three most famous eighteenth century British Empiricists (see LOCKE, JOHN and HUME, DAVID). He is best known for his motto, esse is percipi , to be is to be perceived. He was an idealist: everything that exists is either a mind or depends for its existence upon a mind. He was an immaterialist: matter does not exist. He accepted the seemingly outrageous position that ordinary physical objects are composed solely of ideas, which are inherently mental. He wrote on vision, mathematics, Newtonian mechanics, economics, and medicine as well as philosophy. In his own time, his most often-read works concerned the medicinal value of tar-water. And in a curious sense, he was the first great American philosopher.

Life and Works George Berkeley was born in or near Kilkenny, Ireland on 12 March 1685. He was raised in Dysart Castle. Although his father was English, Berkeley always considered himself Irish. In 1696, he entered Kilkenny College. He entered Trinity College, Dublin on 21 March 1700 and received his B.A. in 1704. He remained associated with Trinity College until 1724. In 1706 he competed for a College Fellowship which had become available and became a Junior Fellow on 9 June 1707. After completing his doctorate, he became a Senior Fellow in 1717. As was common practice for British academics at the time, Berkeley was ordained as an Anglican priest in 1710.

David Hume (Edinburgh 26-4-1711 - 25-8-1776 Edinburgh)

A. Leven
I. 'Mijn eigen Leven'

to see exclusive Kennerly photographs of Ansel Adams. ifteen years ago the world lost a great photographer and conservationist. I lost a friend and a colleague. He was Ansel Adams. Ansel went through life with a camera and a twinkle in his eye. He was a man of great talent, perseverance and passion. According to his friend Bill Turnage, Ansel was "the direct heir to John Muir's mantle as the emotional and ideological leader of the environmental movement." His life-long interest was in the national parks, and through his 40 years of leadership in the Sierra Club and his exquisite photography, he brought the parks into the American consciousness. But the man I knew simply wanted to be known as an artist. I met Ansel when I was the official photographer during President Gerald Ford's administration. I had admired his work, and we had started a correspondence. I arranged for Ansel to come in and meet with President Ford, and to give the president his views on the national parks. Even though some members of the press joked that Ansel was the first environmentalist the president had ever met, Ford was in fact a strong supporter of the national parks, and had been a park ranger at Yellowstone when he was a young man in 1936.

Soon after completing his studies at Edinburgh, Scottish philosopher David Hume began writing his comprehensive statement of the views he believed would contribute to philosophy no less than Newton's had to science. But the public reception for the three books of his magisterial Treatise of Human Nature (1739) was less than cordial, and Hume abandoned his hopes of a philosophical career in order to support his family as a librarian, historian, diplomat, and political essayist, a course of action he described in the autobiographical My Own Life (1776). Hume's Essays Moral and Political (1741-1742) found some success, and the multi-volume History of England (1754-1762) finally secured the modest livelihood for which he had hoped. Although he spent most of his life trying to produce more effective statements of his philosophical views, he did not live to see the firm establishment of his reputation by the criticisms of Kant and much later appreciation of the logical positivists The central themes of Book I of the Treatise receive a somewhat more accessible treatment in An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding (1748), a more popular summary of Hume's
