Die Autorin hat dazu den Nachlaß von Hannah Arendt eingesehen. Aus den Briefen Heideggers an Hannah Arendt zu zitieren, ist ihr unverständlicherweise nicht erlaubt worden. So ist in dieser Beziehung der Leser auf ihre Schilderung angewiesen - und diese ist für Heidegger nicht schmeichelhaft: Hannah Arendt wird als eine von Heidegger verführte Studentin beschrieben, die von ihm aus egoistischen Motiven ausgenutzt, in ihrer Entwicklung gehemmt und als Intellektuelle nicht für voll genommen wird. Ob und wie sie in ihrem Denken von Heidegger profitiert hat, wird nicht thematisiert. Das Buch ist insofern problematisch, als es aus einer "Schlüssellochperspektive" (Frankfurter Rundschau) stark wertet. Christine Pries meint deshalb, für eine persönliche Einschätzung beider sei es auf jeden Fall geraten, "auf die Veröffentlichung des Briefwechsels zwischen Arendt und Heidegger zu warten", die jetzt schon früher erfolgen soll als ursprünglich geplant. Auf den aus bodenständigem Milieu stammenden Heidegger übte die jüdisch-kosmopolitische Frau, die mit ihrem Bubikopf und ihrer modischen Kleidung in der kleinen Universitätsstadt Marburg mißbilligende Blicke auf sich zog, mit ihrem exotischen Aussehen und ihrer Aufgeschlossenheit einen so starken Reiz aus, daß er sich mit ihr auf eine heimliche Affäre einließ, mit der er seine Ehe und seine Karriere gefährdete. Er scheute sich nicht davor, ihr Liebesbriefe zu schreiben, so tief waren seine bisher noch nie erlebten Gefühle und Gedanken. Beide waren begeistert von Bach und Beethoven, Rilke und Thomas Mann und Heideggers Ausführungen über Plato, Sokrates und Heraklit blieben kostbare Erinnerungen für sie. Aber so abhängig er von dieser Liebe emotional auch sein mochte, von Anfang an hatte er als reifer Mann und Lehrer die Oberhand.

MARTIN HEIDEGGER AND ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS After World War II, Martin Heidegger directed much of his thinking to technology and to the impact of technology on our perceptions of human life. One of the essays developed along this path was "The Question Concerning Technology." It is unfortunate that the essay is not widely read because it carries the critique of technology out of its usual context and form and delivers it into a new light where there is, perhaps, some progress to be made. Furthermore, the essay has special significance to environmental issues and, I believe, lays a new groundwork for an ethical approach to our relations with the environment. The tension in this essay comes into sharp focus, at the end, in Heidegger's preposterous suggestion that art may be what we need to carry us out of the dangerous epoch of technology. I say that this is "preposterous" on two grounds. First, our society thinks of technology as its distinctive talent and strength, not as a disaster. Second, our society sees art as frivolous and impotent in the "real world" of capitalistically generated technology. Heidegger himself recognized this irony and devoted the major portion of the essay to a careful analysis of the dangers that befall us in technology. His suggestion regarding art came late and remained poorly explicated. My intention, in this essay, is to interpret Heidegger's thesis about technology and art in the context of forming an ethical approach to the environment. What we shall discover along this path is that human nature, technology, and art are all intertwined in complex ways. At present, these relationships stand in great confusion and this confusion is part of the danger of our time. But this confusion can be grasped and dispensed with by thinking our way into the essence of our technological epoch. We may also ask, What is the essence of art that it might bear some relation to this epoch? And finally, What is our essence as human beings in relation to technology, art, and our natural environment?

Post-World War II philosophy, like Postwar politics, has been fundamentally shaped by the work of a seminary dropout. Stalin spent several years at the Tiflis Theological Seminary reading radical Marxist propaganda, until he was expelled in 1899 for failing to take examinations. Likewise, Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), granddaddy of existentialism, was originally destined for the Roman Catholic priesthood, and his earliest works were studies of scholastic philosophy. Julien Benda was more literally accurate than he might have imagined when he wrote of the trahison des clercs. One of the many virtues of Hugo Ott's recent biography of Heidegger is the prominence given to the philosopher's thorny relationship with the "system of Catholicism." This, together with what Heidegger called the "failure of the rectorship" at Freiburg, provide the coordinates of Heidegger's political and intellectual life. Heidegger began as a "postulant who sought entry to the Society of Jesus, [a] student of Catholic theology and lecturer in Christian (which is to say, Catholic) philosophy..., whose staunchly Catholic origins - his father having been sexton at Messkirch - were clear beyond a shadow of doubt" (p. 98). Personal and academic conflicts with Catholic scholars and officials, however, left Heidegger permanently disabled by a bitter anticlericalism. His marriage to a Protestant doubtless exercised some influence. Philosophi-cally, he came increasingly under the influence of Edmund Husserl's phenomenology. As a result of these intellectual and personal transformations, sometime between 1917 and 1919, Heidegger "abandoned the faith of his birth."

Con treinta y ocho años reemplaza a Husserl en la cátedra de filosofía de Friburgo y luego llegaría a ser nombrado rector de la misma. Debido a sus ideas políticas a favor de los nazis fue censurado en más de una ocasión y se vio obligado a abandonar la universidad. Fue un gran crítico de la metafísica y se apoyó en el existencialismo con la muerte como último fin. Heidegger, Martin The early philosophical career of Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), culminating in the publication of Sein und Zeit Being and Time ), is dominated by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz's old question, Why is there something rather than nothing? Heidegger's idea is that the philosophical tradition has lost the sense of this question. Being, like Nothing, is an empty category. There are no conditions in which it makes sense to speak of it. It is not a philosophical problem, unless it is just the problem of the copula, the "is." The history of philosophy, or of ontology or metaphysics, is, Heidegger likes to say, the history of the "forgetfulness of being." There is also a sense, however, in which Being is not forgotten at all but is, rather, always already understood, and this understanding is what characterizes our relationship with the world around us, our being-in-the-world. It is this fundamental, pre-theoretical understanding that Heidegger tries to clarify in Being and Time by means of a phenomenological analysis of our everydayness, that is, a descriptive account of how it is with us, what it is like, in our everyday world. Heidegger's idea is that our relationship with the world is not one of knowing; that is, it does not consist in having things in view. The world is not made of objects present before us or before our conceptual gaze. We belong to the world, are in it and involved with it. We are not spectators at a passing show. Rather, things surround usthey are what Heidegger calls "ready-at-hand"and our relation to them is one of practical familiarity, or knowing what they are for, rather than one of theoretical interest, or knowing what they are as such. Philosophy quarrels over the existence of the world, but what matters to us is not the existence of the world but our ontological involvement with it.
