A Centenary that may hold the Key to the Next Millennium
A Tribute to Friedrich A. von Hayek on his Birth Centenary - May 8, 1999 Barun S. Mitra
  • Introduction Impact of Hayek Hayek, the academic activist ... Endnotes
  • Introduction This month marks the birth centenary of Friedrich A. von Hayek, one of the greatest philosopher of freedom and Nobel laureate economist. While we in India were fascinated by government planning, a quarter century ago in 1974, the Nobel Academy held that "von Hayek's analysis of the functional efficiency of different economic systems is one of his most significant contributions to economic research in the broader sense. … … His conclusion is that only by far-reaching decentralization in a market system with competition and free price-fixing is it possible to make full use of knowledge and information."
    Impact of Hayek
Today, a wide range of people has acknowledged his contribution all over the world. From philosophers like Karl Popper, Robert Nozick and Michael Focult, to political leaders like Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and Vaclav Kalus, to Nobel laureate economists like Milton Friedman, James Buchanan and Ronald Coase, and countless others. As the iron curtain was being built in the aftermath of World War II, Ludwig Erhard, the finance minister of West Germany turned to Hayekian ideas to rebuild his country. Half a century later when the iron curtain collapsed, leaders in many countries in Eastern Europe again turned to Hayek in their attempt to rebuild their societies. And Hayek is reportedly available on the bookshelf of even the Chinese Prime Minister.

Up From Freedom: Friedrich von Hayek and the Defence of Liberty
by Professor Richard Ebeling Friedrich August von Hayek was one of the greatest economists and political philosophers of the 20th century. After Ludwig von Mises, Professor Hayek was the leading figure of the Austrian School of Economics during the last six decades. He also was one of the most profound defenders of liberty over the last two hundred years. With his death on March 23, 1992, an era comes to an end. Born on May 8, 1899, Professor Hayek served in the Austro-Hungarian army during the First World War, seeing action on the Italian front. At the end of the war, he returned to Vienna and earned a doctorate in law with an emphasis in economics. He then acquired another doctorate in political science. In 1923, he became an assistant to Ludwig von Mises at the Austrian Reparations Commission, and in 1927 they founded the Austrian Institute for Business Cycle Research, with Hayek as the director and Mises serving as the executive vice president. In 1929, Hayek published Monetary Theory and the Trade Cycle and an article on "The Paradox of Savings." As a result he was invited by the London School of Economics to deliver a series of lectures, which were published in 1931 as Prices and Production.

Moral Philosophy Samuel Brittanwho I believe is extremely perceptive and penetrating (although not at all unsympathetic)on Friedrich Hayek. From "Hayek, Freedom, and Interest Groups," in The Role and Limits of Government (London: Maurice Temple Smith, 1983): The first page of the first chapter of Hayek's own Constitution of Liberty starts with the sentence: We are concerned in this book with that condition of men in which coercion of some by others is reduced as much as possible. He contrasts his idea of freedom with Ignatius Loyola's of the Jesuit who should be 'as soft wax' in the hands of his superior.... Yet... the Epilogue of the final volume of his last major work, Law, Legislation, and Liberty , includes a fierce denunciation of permissiveness in general and educational permissiveness in particular.... [I]t is remarkable that someone who wishes to reduce the role of coercion in human affairs should express unqualified hostility to those who wish to reduce the role of coercion in the bringing-up of young people.... Friedrich A. Hayek, who died on March 23, 1992, at the age of 92, was probably the most prodigious classical liberal scholar of the 20th century. Though his 1974 Nobel prize was in Economic Science, his scholarly endeavors extended well beyond economics. He published 130 articles and 25 books ranging from technical economics to theoretical psychology, from political philosophy to legal anthropology, and from the philosophy of science to the history of ideas. Hayek was no mere dabbler; he was an accomplished scholar in each of these fields of inquiry. He made major contributions to our understanding in at least three different areas -government intervention, economic calculation under socialism, and development of the social structure. It is unlikely that we will see the likes of such a wide-ranging scholar of the human sciences again. Hayek was born. into a family of intellectuals in Vienna on May 8, 1899. He earned doctorates from the University of Vienna (1921 and 1923). During the early years of the 20th century the theories of the Austrian School of Economics, sparked by Menger's Principles of Economics (1871), were gradually being formulated and refined by Eugen Boehm-Bawerk, his brother-in-law, Friedrich Wieser, and Ludwig von Mises. When Hayek attended the University of Vienna, he sat in on one of Mises' classes, but found Mises' anti-socialist position too strong for his liking. Wieser was a Fabian socialist whose approach was more attractive to Hayek at the time, and Hayek became his pupil. Yet, ironically it was Mises, through his devastating critique of socialism published in 1922, who turned Hayek away from Fabian socialism.

In 1967, English economist Sir John Hicks published an essay titled "The Hayek Story" in which he said that: When the definitive history of economic analysis during the nineteen thirties comes to be written, a leading character in the drama (it was quite a drama) will be Professor Hayek.... Hayek's economic writings ... are almost unknown to the modern student; it is hardly remembered that there was a time when the new theories of Hayek were the principal rival of the new theories of Keynes. Which was right, Keynes or Hayek? In February 1931, Friedrich August von Hayek had arrived in England from Vienna, Austria, to deliver a series of lectures at the London School of Economics. The lectures created such excitement and sensation that he was invited to permanently join the faculty of the LSE. In the early fall of 1931 these lectures appeared in book form under the title Prices and Production and began the "drama" to which John Hicks referred. Indeed, in the years between 1931 and 1935, Hayek was the third-most frequently cited economist in the English-language economics journals. (John Maynard Keynes and his Cambridge University colleague Dennis Robertson came in first and second.)

    Friedrich the Great
Dismissed by critics as a free-market extremist, economist Friedrich Hayek is gaining new attention as a forerunner of cognitive psychology, information theory, even postmodernism. A reintroduction to one of the most important thinkers you've barely heard of.
By Virginia Postrel, 1/11/2004 AT A RECENT think-tank luncheon in Raleigh, economist Bruce J. Caldwell chatted with a local lawyer active in Democratic party circles. The man asked Caldwell what his new book was about. "It's an intellectual biography of Friedrich Hayek," replied Caldwell, a professor at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. He got a blank look. "He was an economist. A libertarian economist." ADVERTISEMENT What an understatement. Hayek, who died in 1992, was not just any economist. He won the Nobel Prize in economics in 1974. His 1945 article, "The Use of Knowledge in Society," is a touchstone work on the role of prices in coordinating dispersed information. His 1944 bestseller "The Road to Serfdom" helped catalyze the free-market political movement in the United States and continues to sell thousands of copies a year. Economist Milton Friedman calls him "the most important social thinker of the 20th century." Hayek's most significant contribution, he explains, "was to make clear how our present complex social structure is not the result of the intended actions of individuals but of the unintended consequences of individual interactions over a long period of time, the product of social evolution, not of deliberate planning."
