Self-consciousness (247)- The notion that the rational contains contradictions that the individual must see. Ideology (247)- A system of irrational beliefs that are maintained despite their lack of validity. Hermeneutics (248)- "Interpretative understanding," an analysis of events and situations. Positivism (249)- A contrast to hermeneutics, the disinterested scientific interpretation of events. Freudian psychoanalysis (250)- Dialogue between the analyst and patient, allows analyst to reveal the unconscious structure of the dysfunctional behavior. Self-reflection (250)- The process in which the patient recollects and reconstructs a portion of lost life history.

Su educación discurre en las universidades de Gotinga, Zurich y Bonn, realizando su doctorado en Marburgo. Imparte clases de filosofía y sociología en la Universidad de Heidelberg y Frankfurt y a partir de la década de los años setenta fue director del Instituto Max Planck , cargo en que permaneció hasta 1980. En la década de los años cincuenta colaboró con Theodor Adorno. Su pensamiento está directamente relacionado con la escuela de Frankfurt. En su obra "Ciencia y Técnica como ideología" cuestiona la convivencia entre la sociedad industrial y la democracia. De su producción también cabe destacar "Teoría de la acción comunicativa", donde aplica sus conocimientos de filosofía social y del lenguaje y sociología. Su filosofía está influida por el pensamiento de Hegel Marx , Husserl y Heidegger

HABERMAS, Jurgen, (1929-). German sociologist and originator of the theory of Communication ethics, Habermas took up a chair in philosophy and sociology at the University of Frankfurt in 1964 where he was assistant to Theodor Adorno. In 1971 he moved to the Max Planck Institute, Starnberg. He worked with Claus Offe, Niklas Luhmann and Klaus Eder, influencing a generation of German social scientists. Wrote amongst other works Theorie und Praxis (1963), Towards a Rational Society (1970), Knowledge and Human Interests (1968), Legitimation Crisis (1973) and two volumes of The Theory of Communicative Action.

Jurgen Habermas (n.1929) Um dos mais importantes filósofos alemães do século XX, nasceu em Gummersbach, a 18 de Junho de 1929. Fez cursos de filosofia, história e literatura, interessou-se pela psicologia e economia (Universidades de de Gotingen- com Nicolai Harttman-, de Zurique e de Bona). Em 1954 doutorou-se em filosofia na universidade de Bona. Estudou com Adorno e foi assistente no Instituto de Investigação Social de Frankfurt am Main (1956-1959). Em 1961 obtém licença para ensinar (Universidade de Marburg) e, em seguida, é nomeado professor extraordinário de filosofia da Universidade de Heidelberg (1961-1964), onde ensinava Hans Geor Gadamer. Foi nomeado depois professor titular de filosofia e sociologia da Universidade de Frankfurt am Main (1964-1971). Desde 1971 é co-director do Instituto Max Plank para a Investigação das Condições de Vida do Mundo Técnico-Científico, em Starnberg. Habermas foi durante os anos 60 um dos principais teóricos e depois crítico do movimento estudantil. É considerado um dos últimos representantes da escola de Frankfurt.
