Darius, Julian. Essays in Search of a Medium . St. Louis, Missouri: Academic Nationalist University Press, 2003. The “half-told and mangled tale” of Caleb Williams

by Julian Darius While many have touched upon the unreliability of the narrator in Caleb Williams (1794), they have done so primarily in connection with Godwin’s politics, psychology in general, or the novel’s characteristics as detective novel. Godwin as well as the text encourage a political reading. As Maurice Hindle remarks, “that Godwin originally viewed Caleb Williams as a vehicle for the philosophical anarchism preached in his magnum opus Enquiry Concerning Political Justice (1793) is made clear in numerous ways by the text” (x-xi). Godwin’s withdrawn preface described his desire to communicate “truth … to persons whom books of philosophy and science are never likely to reach” (3). Moreover, as Hindle has observed, “in many ways it is impossible to separate the ‘literary’ and the ‘biographical’ in the case of Godwin,” an anarchist and sympathizer with the French revolution (xxviii).
From this proceeds so many dry comparisons of Caleb Williams with Enquiry Concerning Political Justice , as when George Sherburn interrupts a description of the prison scenes to assert “But Godwin’s real purpose was to dramatize ideas” (ix). Evan Radcliffe contrasts “the austerely logical approach of

A minister in his youth, he was, however, plagued by religious doubts and gave up preaching in 1783 for a literary career. His Enquiry Concerning Political Justice Adventures of Caleb Williams St. Leon (1799), and Fleetwood (1805). In 1797, Godwin married Mary Wollstonecraft, who died the same year after giving birth to a daughter, Mary. He remarried in 1801 and in 1805 established a small, juvenile publishing business. His last years were an unceasing struggle against poverty and debt. Godwin's works strongly influenced his younger contemporaries, particularly Shelley , whose elopement with Mary (1814) drew from Godwin an exhibition of sternness at variance with his earlier views. However, he was later reconciled to their marriage. See biographies by F. K. Brown (1926) and E. K. Paul (2 vol., 1896; repr. 1970); studies by H. N. Brailsford (2d ed. 1951), D. H. Munro (1953), J. William Godwin
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. William Godwin March 3 April 7 ) was an English political and miscellaneous writer , considered one of the important precursors of both utilitarian and anarchist thought. He is also famous for the women in his life: he married the early feminist writer Mary Wollstonecraft in and together with her had one daughter, Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin , better known as Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein who married the poet Percy Shelley Born at Wisbech in Cambridgeshire , his family on both sides were middle-class people, and it was probably only as a joke that Godwin, a stern political reformer and philosophical radical, attempted to trace his pedigree to a time before the Norman Conquest and the great earl, Godwine . Both parents (John and Anne Godwin) were strict Calvinists . His father, a Nonconformist minister, died young, and never inspired love or much regret in his son; but in spite of wide differences of opinion, tender affection always subsisted between William Godwin and his mother, until her death at an advanced age. William Godwin was educated for his father's profession at Hoxton Academy , where he was under Andrew Kippis the biographer and Dr Abraham Rees of the Cyclopaedia , and was at first more Calvinistic than his teachers, becoming a

WILLIAM GODWIN
GODWIN, WILLIAM - (1756-1836), English political and miscellaneous writer, son of a Nonconformist minister, was born on the 3rd of March 1756, at Wisbeach in Cambridgeshire. His family came on both sides of middle-class people, and it was probably only as a joke that Godwin, a stern political reformer and philosophical radical, attempted to trace his pedigree to a time before the Norman conquest and the great earl ,Godwine. Both parents were strict Calvinists. The father died young, and never inspired love or much regret in his son; but in spite of ,wide differences of opinion, tender affection always subsisted between William Godwin and his mother, until her death at an advanced age. His first published work was an anonymous Life of Lord Chatham (1783). ,Under the inappropriate title Sketches of History (1784) he published under his own name six sermons on the characters of Aaron, Hazael and Jesus, in which, though writing in the character of an orthodox Calvinist, he enunciates the proposition God Himself has no right to be a tyrant. Introduced by Andrew Kippis, he began to write in 1785 for the Annual Register aiid other periodicals, producing also three novels now forgotten. The Sketches of English History written for the Annual Register from 1785 onward still deserve study. He joined a club called the Revolutionists, and associated much with Lord Stanhope, Home Tooke and Holcroft. His clerical character was now completely dropped. In May 1794 Godwin published the novel of Caleb Williams, or Things as they are, a book of which the political object is overlooked by many readers in the strong interest of the story. The book was dramatized by the younger Colman as The Iron Chest. It is one of the few novels of that time which may be said still to live.i A theorist who lived mainly in his study, Godwin yet came forward boldly to stand by prisoners arraigned of high treason in that same year1794. The danger to persons so charged was then great, and he deliberately put himself into this same danger for his friends. But when his own trial was discussed in the privy council, Pitt sensibly held that Political Justice, the work on which the charge could best have been founded, was priced at three guineas, and could never do much harm among those who had not three shillings to spare.

GODWIN, WILLIAM

(b. 3 Mar. 1756, Wisbeach, Cambridgeshire, England / d. April 7, London, 1836) Considered one of the important precursors of both utilitarian and anarchist thought. A minister in his youth, Godwin was, however, plagued by religious doubts and gave up preaching for a literary career. In 1797, he married feminist Mary Wollstonecraft , who died the same year after giving birth to a daughter, Mary. He remarried in 1801 and in 1805 established a small, juvenile publishing business. A profound optimist concerning human nature, Godwin nonetheless recognized the exploitative nature of capitalism and proposed a utopian restructuring of society whereby those who earn more than their basic needs would distribute the surplus to the needy. In his An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice (1793) he argued that government is a corrupting force in society, perpetuating dependence and ignorance, but that it will be rendered increasingly unnecessary and powerless by the gradual spread of knowledge. Politics will be displaced by an enlarged personal morality as truth conquers error and mind subordinates matter. The pursuit of happiness should be the only object of personal and social ethics. Godwin was no revolutionary and he did not advocate the physical destruction of government. Violence and tumult was anathema to a man like Godwin since they were contrary to human reason. He preferred talk and discussion to action and martyrdom. This explains his general hostility toward the movement for parliamentary reform in general and the corresponding societies in particular.
