Leuwen egyetemén folytatott tanulmányai során lett a karteziánus bölcselet követõje, aki tanárként a leuweni Paedagogiumban igyekezett a skolasztikus hagyományt és szemléletmódot élesen elutasító nézeteit érvényre juttatni. Karteziánus nézetei miatt 1658-ban Leydenbe távozott, elhagyta a papi szolgálatot és kálvinista hitre tért át. Ezt követõen 1665-tõl pestisjárvány miatt bekövetkezett haláláig bölcseletet tanított Leydenben. G. bölcseleti rendszerének fõ problémája az anyag és a szellem, a test és a lélek közötti, Descartes által megoldatlanul hagyott kapcsolatnak az elemzése volt. Véleménye szerint a testi és a lelki történések között nem lehetséges valódi kapcsolat; a testi történés puszta alkalmat ( occasio ) ad egy lelki változáshoz és viszont, a kettõ között azonban nem oksági viszony vagy fizikai érintkezés áll fenn, hanem pusztán Isten által létesített alkalmi egybeesés.
