http://www.famousbelgians.net/geulincx.htm
Arnold Geulincx
Arnold Geulincx (1624-1669) was a Flemish Cartesian philosopher who was one of the proponents of occasionalism. Originally a Roman Catholic, Geulincx adopted Calvinism in 1658. He taught at Leuven and later at Leiden. His major works, “Ethica” and “Metaphysica Vera”, were published posthumously. According to Geulincx, body and mind cannot affect each other. A person's intention to move his body is merely the occasion on which God, the only real cause, produces the movement. Since minds cannot affect bodies, people cannot control their actions; they can only control their wills. Accordingly, Geulincx's ethics stresses a humbling of the will.

Japanese Writing Duck ... Survey I originally promised my self I wouldn't do this kind of thing, but when I noticed that the Internet was pitifully lacking in fan pages devoted to this philosopher, I had to. Think of it as me doing my part to make sure that you can find anything on the Web. Sure, there are sites devoted to Geulincx (in fact, much of the information on this page was taken from the now-defunct Geulincx.com, with the blessings of the site's moderator, Han van Ruler), but there were no Fan Pages devoted to him. My main reason for doing this, aside from being able to repeat one of the coolest philosopher names since Aristotle, was to make known what I feel is the most noteworthy part of Geulincx's life and philosophical career. Most philosophy books you'll read in school only devote a paragraph or two to Geulincx, and typically only mention his theory of Occasionalism. When it was up, Geulincx.com put a good deal of its energy towards expounding on his ethical philosophy. I, on the other hand, enjoy his ontological ideas more than anything. Thus, the reason for this Fan Page.

Responsible for the project:
Herman De Dijn , member of research team Institute of philosophy
Title: Force and action : causal metaphors in the works of Arnold
Geulincx (1624-1669).
Project summary: This project aims at an interpretation of Arnold Geulincx'
mechanistic view of nature against the background of his concep-
tion of Aristotelian metaphysics. Geulincx' position may be seen
as the via media by which Scholastic criticism of the new
mechanical philosophy could be neutralized. A critical feature of Aristotelian adversity to mechanism, was the idea that, in a world without individual forces of action, the actio of natural processes could not be sufficiently be explained. Geulincx's position is a very interesting one since he makes the issue of therelation between force and action - and of causality in general - an explicit one. In this project attention will be paid also to the relation between Geulincx and Spinoza.
