Christian History, Providence, and Michel Foucault

Assistant Professor of Philosophy

Thomas Flynn has noted that "All of [Michel] Foucault's major works are histories of a sort, which is enough to make him an historian of a sort. The challenge is to determine what sort of history he does and thus what kind of historian he is." Indeed. Many historians have not been slow to answer that Foucault was a very bad historian. Gertrude Himmelfarb even claims that he is not an historian at all, and she's probably not alone in that sentiment. Well, as a philosopher, I certainly will not weigh in on what counts as entrŽe into the guild of historians or whether or not Foucault makes the grade. This essay is part of a larger project on the subject of Christianity and postmodernity. Here, I want to use Foucault to talk about the Christian doctrine of providence and its relation to history, specifically Christian history. Perhaps the best appellation for Foucault is that of "postmodern philosopher of history." He wouldn't have been very happy with that title, but more on that in a bit. Overview of essay My thesis is that Christian scholars can productively appropriate the historiography of Michel Foucault in their attempt to articulate a faithful and accurate account of God working through history. To prosecute this thesis, I begin with an overview of Foucault's historiographical insights and address the question of what constitutes an "accurate" and "adequate" account of history. I deny the thesis, commonly attributed to Foucault, that there are neither epistemic parameters nor justifying practices for the establishment of claims to historical knowledge. I do recognize, however, that all such claims require appeals to acceptable standards of adjudication, and these standards are never free from problematic justification themselves.

Ideas
T here are more ideas on earth than intellectuals imagine. And these ideas are more active, stronger, more resistant, more passionate than "politicians" think. We have to be there at the birth of ideas, the bursting outward of their force: not in books expressing them, but in events manifesting this force, in struggles carried on around ideas, for or against them. Ideas do not rule the world. But it is because the world has ideas... that it is not passively ruled by those who are its leaders or those who would like to teach it, once and for all, what it must think.

French philosopher and social historian; a leading member of the poststructuralist movement. His studies of modernity focus on deviance and the control of deviance (sexuality, crime, madness), and on discourse . In his famous study of the Western European prison system (1975), he emphasizes the technologies of control that are designed to discipline prison inmates, and generalizes these conclusions to many other institutions in Capitalist society, including schools and work-places. Through discipline, power is inscribed in the body , by means of quasi-military exercises that partition up and specify bodily movements in space and time . This part of Foucault's work is reminiscent of Bourdieu 's writings on habitus . In his work on discourse and discursive formations, Foucault describes the mechanisms through which themes of discourse (discursive objects) become established and "real" in public communication - a prime example is the "creation" of sexuality as a theme of public debate in the 19th century (1978). In order to understand the genesis and development of discursive themes, Foucault recommends that one engage in an "archaeology of knowledge". Foucault's opus is large and varied, and includes such jewels as the short deconstructive essay on Magritte ( Ceci n'est pas une pipe

Michel Foucault on the "Author Function"
From Foucault, Michel. "What is an Author?" Trans. Donald F. Bouchard and Sherry Simon. In Language, Counter-Memory, Practice . Ed. Donald F. Bouchard. Ithaca, New York: Cornell University Press, 1977. pp. 124-127. In dealing with the "author" as a function of discourse, we must consider the characteristics of a discourse that support this use and determine its differences from other discourses. If we limit our remarks only to those books or texts with authors, we can isolate four different features.
