Michel Foucault (1926-84) took licences Madness and Civilization
Beginning in the mid-1960s Foucault's interests turned to Structuralism , a relatively new intellectual trend that opposed "philosophies of consciousness" such as existentialism, Phenomenology , and humanist forms of Marxism and psychoanalysis. The tendency of structuralism to reject the vantage point of the author or subject in favor of that of the text or object may be found in Foucault's Order of Things (1966) and The Archaeology of Knowledge
The political upheaval of May 1968 had profound impact on all French intellectuals. Structuralists were compelled to rethink their rejection of the subject; Marxists and socialists in general could no longer base their critique on the unique suffering of the working class nor limit its scope purely to capitalism as a mode of production (Poster; Smart, Foucault, Marxism ). Foucault's work reflected this change in intellectual mood: Discipline and Punish (1975) argued the imbrication of power with discourse and uncovered a new dimension of domination in modern society, "technologies of power." Volume 1 of The History of Sexuality (1976) rejected the Freudian-Marxist analysis of repressed libido in favor of a focus on the normalizing effects of discourses on sex. During these years Foucault participated in political movements concerned with the reform of prisons and gay liberation. His work and politics reflected a shift in radical movements to groups and concerns outside the traditional working class.

Some certain ideological conflicts come between the advocates the concept of time and the ones of concept of space. Structuralism is the effort to establish, between elements that could have been connected on a temporal axis, an ensemble of relations that makes them appear as juxtaposed, opposed to and implicated with each other, and as a sort of configuration. Actually structuralism does not entail the denial of time; it does involve a certain manner of dealing with what we call time and what we call history. 2. Medieval spacespace of emplacement: Complete hierarchy, opposition, and intersections of places constitute the stability and natural ground of Medieval space. by Wendy McElroy "Feminist scholars, many drawing on the insights offered by Michel Foucault, have urged us to develop new ways of thinking and speaking." So write the editors of the book Analyzing Gender In their scholarly work Knowing Women: Feminism and Knowledge , two different feminist editors explain why the French philosopher Michel Foucault is quoted extensively therein: "Foucault's discourse theory and the 'post-structuralist' methods of analysis which depend on it have become very influential within feminist studies." Since I have an antipathy to fully one-third of the words in the preceding sentence, I tend to screen out such scholarly discussions of Foucault for the sake of my digestion. In truth, I screen the man out even when he is quoted in more popular feminist works, such the writing of the feminist Foucault-fan Judith Butler, or Sharon Welsh's Communities of Resistance and Solidarity in which Welsh uses Foucaldian methodology to construct a feminist liberation theology. I even ignore rather intriguing works such as Valerie Walkerdine's SchoolGirl Fictions in which she declares: "How is this truth constituted...Such questions, derived from the methodology of genealogy utilized by Foucault, can help us begin to take apart this truth about girls."

    60. Introduction To Michel Foucault, Module On Panoptic And Carceral Culture
michel foucault seeks throughout his work to make sense of how our contemporary society is structured differently from the society that preceded us.
    http://www.sla.purdue.edu/academic/engl/theory/newhistoricism/modules/foucaultca
M ICHEL F OUCAULT seeks throughout his work to make sense of how our contemporary society is structured differently from the society that preceded us. He has been particularly influential precisely because he tends to overturn accepted wisdom, illustrating the dangers inherent in those Enlightenment reforms that were designed to correct the barbarity of previous periods (the elimination of dungeons, the modernization of medicine, the creation of the public university, etc.). As Foucault illustrates, each process of modernization entails disturbing effects with regard to the power of the individual and the control of government. Indeed, his most influential work, Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison , paints a picture of contemporary society that sometimes resembles George Orwell's . He explores the ways that government has claimed ever greater control over and enforcement of ever more private aspects of our lives. In particular, Foucault explores the transition from what he terms a "culture of spectacle" to a "carceral culture." Whereas in the former punishment was effected on the body in public displays of torture, dismemberment, and obliteration, in the latter punishment and discipline become internalized and directed to the constitution and, when necessary, rehabilitation of social subjects.
