The Foucault Reader
by Michel Foucault , Paul Rabinow (Editor). Michel Foucault was one of the most influential thinkers in the contemporary world, someone whose work has affected the teaching of half a dozen disciplines ranging from literary criticism to the history of criminology. But of his many books, not one offers a satisfactory introduction to the entire complex body of his work. The Foucault Reader was commissioned precisely to serve that purpose. The Reader contains selections from each area of Foucault's work as well as a wealth of previously unpublished writings, including important material written especially for this volume, the preface to the long-awaited second volume of The History of Sexuality, and interviews with Foucault himself, in the course of which he discussed his philosophy at first hand and with unprecedented candor. This philosophy comprises an astonishing intellectual enterprise: a minute and ongoing investigation of the nature of power in society. Foucault's analyses of this power as it manifests itself in society, schools, hospitals, factories, homes, families, and other forms of organized society are brought together in The Foucault Reader to create an overview of this theme and of the broad social and political vision that underlies it.

Biography
Michel Foucault Madness and Unreason: History of Madness in the Classical Age , 1961). In this text, Foucault abolished the possibility of separating madness and reason into universally objective categories. He does this by studying how the division has been historically established, how the distinctions we make between madness and sanity are a result of the invention of madness in the Age of Reason. He does a reading of Descartes' First Meditation , and accuses him of being able to doubt everything except his own sanity, thus excluding madness from hyperbolic doubt. In the 1960s Foucault was head of the philosophy departments at the University of Clemont-Ferrand, and at the Vincennes Experimental University Centre. It was at this time that he met the philosophy student Daniel Defert, whose political activism would be a major influence on Foucault. When Defert went to fulfill his volunteer service requirement in Tunisia, Foucault followed, teaching in Tunisia from 1966-68. They returned to Paris during the time of the student revolts, an event that would have a profound effect on Foucault's work. He took the position of head of the Philosophy Department at the University of Paris-VII at Vincennes where he brought together some of the most influential thinkers in France at the time. It was in 1968 that he formed, with others, the Prison Information Group, an organization that gave voice to the concerns of prisoners.

welcome. Michel Foucault This page gives a very brief introduction to Foucault's work (or the part of it that interests us), plus a select bibliography and a bunch of links to some web resources on other sites. On the separate Why Foucault? page, in a hopefully user-friendly move, I try to explain the ways in which Foucault is useful and relevant by the sympathetic means of admitting how, when I was an undergraduate, I couldn't really understand why people seemed to think he was useful and relevant. You can also see how Foucault fits into queer theory , see reviews of some Foucault-related books , read essays on Foucault, and gaze at Foucault's Paris You can also see the results of our competition to find a one-sentence definition of " technologies of the self ". But first... The brief and oversimplified intro to Foucault We often talk about people as if they have particular attributes as 'things' inside themselves they have an identity , for example, and we believe that at the heart of a person there is a fixed and true identity or character (even if we're not sure that we know quite what that is, for a particular person). We assume that people have an inner

Parrhesiasts Truth-telling as an activity was one of Michel Foucault's last theme of research. The problematization of truth-telling or parrhesia during Antiquity was the main subject of the seminar he gave at Berkeley in 1983 . In parallel, Foucault has given two series of lessons at the College de France untitled " le courage de la verite "the courage of truth-telling describing the life and ethics of truth-tellers or 'parrhesiasts' with a long portrait of Diogenes the Cynic as a professional truth-teller with appropriate techniques. Since then, cynicism has been rehabilitated as a philosophy and analysed in numerous publications.

[excerpt from the seminar given by Foucault in 1983]
This brings us to Cynic parrhesia. The main types of parrhesiastic practice utilized by the Cynics were. (1) critical preaching; (2) scandalous behavior; and (3) what I shall call the "Provocative dialogue." Critical Preaching : Preaching is still one of the main forms of truth-telling practiced in our society, and it involves the idea that the truth must be told and taught not only to the best members of the society, or to an exclusive group, but to everyone. Scandalous Behavior : Cynic parrhesia also had recourse to scandalous behavior or attitudes which called into question collective habits, opinions, standards of decency, institutional rules, and so on. Several procedures were used. One of them was the inversion of roles, as can be seen from Dio Chrysostom's Fourth Discourse where the famous encounter between Diogenes and Alexander is depicted. This encounter, which was often referred to by the Cynics, does not take place in the privacy of Alexander's court but in the street, in the open. The king stands up while Diogenes sits back in his barrel. Diogenes orders Alexander to step out of his light so that he can bask in the sun. Ordering Alexander to step aside so that the sun' s light can reach Diogenes is an affirmation of the direct and natural relation the philosopher has to the sun in contrast to the mythical genealogy whereby the king, as descended from a god, was supposed to personify the sun.

People disagree as to whether Foucault was postmodern, but if we use Lyotard's compelling definition of postmodernism, then Foucault makes a distinctly postmodern statement at the beginning of his book, The Birth of the Clinic. Lyotard (1993) defines postmodernism as an incredulity towards metanarratives. In other words, it is a skepticism towards all grand theories that think they have the last word.. The moderns, Lyotard tells us, believed in metanarratives. They were always thinking that they had found the final and correct theory, but postmoderns are more incredulous. Foucault expresses this postmodern skepticism early in this book when he challenges the myths of modernity. The "Revolution" he speaks of is the French Revolution. (The French and the American revolutions are the events that launched the modernity that had been breeding for half a century before that.) Articulating his postmodern skepticism, Foucault says:
