Epicureanism
This term has two distinct, though cognate, meanings. In its popular sense, the word stands for a refined and calculating selfishness, seeking not power or fame, but the pleasures of sense, particularly of the palate, and those in company rather than solitude. An epicure is one who is extremely choice and delicate in his viands. In the other sense, Epicureanism signifies a philosophical system, which includes a theory of conduct, of nature, and of mind. HISTORY Epicurus, from whom this system takes its name, was a Greek, born at Samos 341 B.C., who, in 307 B.C., founded a school at Athens, and died 270 B.C. The Stoic School, diametrically opposite to this, was founded about the same time, probably 310 B.C. Thus these two systems, having for their respective watchwords Pleasure and Duty, sprang up within the first generation after Aristotle Aristotelic systems) as one of the four great philosophies to be established and endowed on a footing of equality. In modern times Epicureanism has had many theoretical as well as practical adherents. In the seventeenth century, when Aristoteleanism and Scholasticism were assailed by the champions of the new sciences, Gassendi (q.v.) selected Epicurus for his master; but he seems to have been attracted chiefly by the physics, and to have aimed at reforming the moral theory so as to make it tolerable to a

Epicurus, Hellenistic Greek philosopher (born Samos 341 BC ; died Athens 270 BC ). Epicurus was born into an Athenian émigré family - his parents, both Athenian citizens, had moved to an Athenian settlement on the Ionian island of Samos. He returned to Athens to serve as an ephebe - a young citizen in military training. The playwright Menander served in the same age-class of the ephebes as Epicurus. Epicurus
(341-270 BC) Philosopher from Samos who founded a school in Mytilene on Lesbos, and also became head of a school in Lampsacus (today's Turkey).
Epicurus came from a poor family, but showed such talent that his parents through many hardships kept him in school. As a youth he did military service in Athens, and was to return later to teach his ideas.
He had many disciples, and they were called the "philosophers of the garden" since most teachings took place his garden. Both women and men were welcome, which resulted in much gossip about the ongoings there.
Although Epicurus wrote many texts, only little has survived to the afterworls. We do now he wrote on such varied subjects as physics, love, justice and the gods.
One of his basic ideas was that one should try to achieve pleasure and avoid pain through clarity and balance of mind and thought.
"Life's fundamental priciple is the satisfaction of the needs and wants of the stomach. All important and trivial matters depend on this principle and cannot be differentiated from it."

Wisdom hasn't come a step further since Epicurus but has often gone many thousands of steps backwards.
- Friedrich Nietzsche [www.epicureans.org/epitalk.htm. August 4, 1998.] Epicurus' Ataraxia vs Hedonism Epicurus of Samos (341-270 B.C.) and his philosophy have been controversial for over two millenia. One reason is our tendency to reject pleasure as a moral good . We usually think of charity, compassion, humility, wisdom, honor, justice, and other virtues as morally good and pleasure as, at best, morally neutral, but for Epicurus, behavior in pursuit of pleasure assured an upright life.

Then as Now
Three hundred years before there were any Christians, the philosopher Epicurus founded (306 BCE ) a school, or rather college, in a small house and a garden in Athens. 'The Garden', as it is called, also published books. His philosophy taught of an infinite universe of moving particles - the one on which modern science is ultimately based. He taught that the universe evolved naturally - no gods created it, nor do they intervene in it. Life cannot exist after death so there can be no heaven and no hell. The aim of life is to avoid pain and experience pleasure, so the purpose of this life - the only one we have - must be to make it as happy as possible. And happiness is open to all. It depends upon simple needs easily satisfied, prudence in all things, friendship, kindness, a pain-free body and tranquillity of mind. In all, a philosophy for ancient and modern times. His outlook spread throughout the Roman world, but after many centuries of influence it was eventually smothered by the dominance of Christianity. There is now renewed interest in it.

Feature Article Epicurus, Lucretius and Pierre Gassendi About atoms and a happy life
RATE THIS ARTICLE Two Greeks, a Roman poet and a French cleric with an Italian name. T his is a story about Democritus, Epicurus, Lucretius and Pierre Gassendi and some unpopular ideas. Who are these guys and why should you care? Good question so let's dig in. You'll have to forgive me but I'm going to mention a few dates. The dates are significant because they allow you to see how these fellows relate to each other and who might have influenced whom, or not. Epicurus Let's begin with Epicurus who lived from 341 BC to 270 BC. That makes him a little more recent than Aristotle (384-322 BC) with a slight overlap. The reason that is significant is that Epicurus believed just about everything Aristotle did not. To begin with, he favored the atomic theory of the universe developed by Democritus (460-370 BC) who himself preceded Aristotle by a few years. Democritus D emocritus developed the atomic idea although he gave the credit to someone he called Leucippus whose existence is in fact doubted by some. According to him, all things are composed of minute, invisible, indestructible particles of pure matter. Sounds familiar doesn't it? Keep in mind that this is more than two thousand years ago. To Democritus the "creation" of worlds was the

From The Philosopher, Volume LXXXXI No. 2
Materialism and Ethics Learning from Epicurus John Sellars As the new seventeenth century mechanistic conception of nature developed and gained wider currency during the eighteenth century Enlightenment, a number of contemporaries began to have some doubts about the ethical implications of this essentially materialist philosophy. If man was really simply a machine - as the title of La Mettrieís infamous book proclaimed - determined by Newtonian laws of nature, then what room was left for morality? Even if God existed - a claim also called into question during this period - how could man follow his moral commands if every human action could, in principal, be predicted according to the increasingly sophisticated laws of science? Further, if all that exists is matter in motion, then what room is left for moral values? According to some, the ethical consequence of Enlightenment materialism was the 'anything goes' immorality of the Marquis de Sade. It appears, then, that philosophical materialism - aligned as it is with atheism and determinism - is the enemy of ethics. It undermines the authority of claims for the existence of objective moral values and it calls into question our usual attributions of praise and blame. If one accepts materialism - the claim everything that exists can ultimately be explained in terms of matter in motion - then what about the future of ethics?

PURSUING HAPPINESS by Lee Holmes Epicurus (341-270 BCE) a Greek philosopher, was born on the island of Samos. In 306 he moved to Athens for his required military training of 2 years. His home garden was turned into a school (known as "The Garden") where he taught his philosophy. His followers who came from all over Greece and Asia Minor were known as "the philosophers of the garden." Unlike the Academy of Plato and the Lyceum of Aristotle "The Garden" admitted women.
The Epicurean philosophy was to secure tranquillity. Epicurus maintained that pleasure was "the freedom from pain and fear". Intellectual pleasures were more important than the sensual ones but essentially pleasure was what humans should strive for. The greatest sources of fear were religion and death. He taught that if we conquered our fear of gods, death and the afterlife we could achieve true happiness.
Epicurus did believe in gods but claimed that they did not interfere with the affairs of the human world.
