The Principal Doctrines of Epicurus
Below are the webmaster's favorite translations for each of Epicurus' Principal Doctrines, also known as his "Sovran Maxims," which comes down to us from the Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers by Diogenes Laërtius That which is happy and imperishable, neither has trouble itself, nor does it cause trouble for anyone else; therefore, it is not subject to feelings of either anger or indebtedness; for these feelings only exist in what is weak. Death is nothing to us; for that which has been dispersed into elements experiences no sensations, and that which has no sensation is nothing to us. The extent of pleasure reaches its maximum at the removal of all pain. When such pleasure is present, so long as it is uninterrupted, there is no pain either of body or of mind or of both together. Continuous bodily pain does not last long; instead, pain, if extreme, is present a very short time, and even that degree of pain which slightly exceeds bodily pleasure does not last for many days at once. Even diseases of long duration allow an excess of bodily pleasure over pain. It is impossible to live a pleasant life without living wisely and honorably and justly, and it is impossible to live wisely and honorably and justly without living pleasantly. Whenever any one of these is lacking, when, for instance, the man is not able to live wisely, though he lives honorably and justly, it is impossible for him to live a pleasant life.

23. Epicuro: Lettera Sulla Felicità
Original text of epicurus' Letter to Menoecius in jpeg format (pictures).

Introduzione

Epicurus
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Epicurus, Hellenistic Greek philosopher (born Samos 341 BC ; died Athens 270 BC ). Epicurus was born into an Athenian émigré family - his parents, both Athenian citizens, had moved to an Athenian settlement on the Aegean island of Samos. He returned to Athens to serve as an ephebe - a young citizen in military training. The playwright Menander served in the same age-class of the ephebes as Epicurus. After pursuing philosophical education in several Greek cities he taught in two cities in Asia Minor . In about 306 BC he bought a house and garden in Athens.

Letter to Menoeceus By Epicurus Translated by Robert Drew Hicks Greeting. Let no one be slow to seek wisdom when he is young nor weary in the search thereof when he is grown old. For no age is too early or too late for the health of the soul. And to say that the season for studying philosophy has not yet come, or that it is past and gone, is like saying that the season for happiness is not yet or that it is now no more. Therefore, both old and young ought to seek wisdom, the former in order that, as age comes over him, he may be young in good things because of the grace of what has been, and the latter in order that, while he is young, he may at the same time be old, because he has no fear of the things which are to come. So we must exercise ourselves in the things which bring happiness

Epicurus by Harold Tarrant The Penguin Dictionary of Philosophy , London, 1997, pp. 171-173 www. BenthamLinks.com/Epicurus Epicurus (341 – 270 BC) founder of the Epicurean school. Born in Samos, he probably learnt atomist philosophy from the Democritean thinker Nausiphanes. When settling in Athens, he bought a property whose garden was the centre of his school, to which slaves and women were also admitted. Epicurus favoured a philosophy that would be easily intelligible and expressed in language which ordinary people could understand. Philosophy was divided into three areas: ethics, physics, and canonic. This last was essentially epistemological. It did not include formal logic, the usefulness of which was questioned. Both canonic and physics were seen as ancillary to ethics, the central part of Epicureanism. The aim was to achieve serenity, peace of mind, which is necessary for happiness. ataraxia ), was particularly important. The virtues, including justice, were explained in terms of enlightened self-interest on hedonist principles; nobody was thought to be virtuous for any other end except the maximization of pleasure and minimization of pain. Epicurean epistemology emphasized the importance of three criteria of truth: the five sense, the anticipations or preconceptions (

31. Hedonism [Internet Encyclopedia Of Philosophy]
The view, first put forward by epicurus, that our fundamental moral obligation is to maximize pleasure.
http://www.utm.edu/research/iep/h/hedonism.htm
Hedonism
Philosophers commonly distinguish between psychological hedonism and ethical hedonism. Psychological hedonism is the view that humans are psychologically constructed in such a way that we exclusively desire pleasure. Ethical hedonism is the view that our fundamental moral obligation is to maximize pleasure or happiness. Ethical hedonism is most associated with the ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus (342-270 BCE.) who taught that our life's goal should be to minimize pain and maximize pleasure. In fact, all of our actions should have that aim: We recognize pleasure as the first good innate in us, and from pleasure we begin every act of choice and avoidance, and to pleasure we return again, using the feeling as the standard by which we judge every good. [Letter to Menoeceus] In A Letter to Menoeceus - one of his few surviving fragments - Epicurus gives advice on how to decrease life's pains, and explains the nature of pleasure. As to decreasing life's pain, Epicurus explains how we can reduce the psychological anguish that results from fearing the gods and fearing death. Concerning the nature of pleasure, Epicurus explains that at least some pleasures are rooted in natural and, as a rule, every pain is bad and should be avoided, and every pleasure is good and should be preferred. However, there is delicate relation between pain and pleasure. Every pain we have is bad, and we should minimize pain when possible. However, sometimes simply minimizing life's pains is sufficient to attain happiness, and we need to go a step further and actively increase pleasure. He argues that we should not pursue every possible pleasure, such as when they produce more pain. Also, argues that the fewer desires we have, the easier it will be to experience happiness.

Epicurus (341-270 B.C.)
Greek philosopher who was born on the Ionian island of Samos. Eventually, he moved to Athens where he opened a school of philosophy in a garden that he had bought and laid out for the purpose. He developed further the doctrine of atomism , as expounded by Leucippus and Democritus , including the idea that life exists elsewhere in the universe. In his Letter to Herodotus , he writes: . . . there are infinite worlds both like and unlike this world of ours . . . we must believe that in all worlds there are living creatures and plants and other things we see in this world. . . . Everything, he believed, could be explained in terms of natural causes. As for the gods, he taught that they existed only in the spaces between worlds, having no interest at all in human affairs.
