Engels, Friedrich (Barmen, Westfalia 1820 - Londres 1895)

FRIEDRICH ENGELS Writer/Philosopher Friedrich Engels moved from Germany to England in 1842, where he worked as a manager in a factory. In 1845 he published The Condition of the Working Class in England, which suggested that the poor working class would only benefit if they fought for socialism. Engels had met Karl Marx in 1844 and together they wrote the Communist Manifesto , predicting ultimate victory for the proletariat. After 1848 Engels returned to England and financially supported Marx, whose works he also edited and translated. Marx and Engels' Writings

30. Karl Marx And Friedrich Engels About Occultism
Karl Marx and friedrich engels on Spiritualism and Theosophy (Blavatsky and Besant).
http://www.stelling.nl/simpos/marxthh.htm
Marx and Engels on Spiritualism and Theosophy
by Herman A.O. de Tollenaere English home page Friedrich Engels (1820-1895)
There are several ways to look at relationships (friendly or unfriendly relationships) between occultism and political tendencies, such as Marxism. In this regard, Bruce Campbell has observed that "Esoteric and mystical sources have been identified as part of the intellectual background for Hegelian and Marxist thought." He did not elaborate on this observation, however, and neither will we. The statement must relate to indirect influence of pre-1800 ideas via Hegel. This concerns, however, an earlier age than the subject of this article. Nor does this article consider subjects later in history, like reciprocal opinions of twentieth century communists and theosophists in such countries as India and Sri Lanka; though that is part of wider research in which I am now involved. This article is specifically about Karl Marx' (1818-1883) and Friedrich Engels' (1820-1895) views on spiritualism and theosophy. They both embarked on their political careers in the 1840's, in the Communist League, an international organization, in which migrant German workers in England were heavily represented. Nineteenth century spiritualism was a widespread, but not well organized movement. As is well-known, it began with the

31. Bruno Bauer And Early Christianity

BRUNO BAUER
AND
EARLY CHRISTIANITY
by
FREDERICK ENGELS
published May 4-11, 1882 in Sozialdemokrat ONLINE VERSION: I n Berlin, on April 13, a man died who once played a role as a philosopher and a theologian, but was hardly heard of for years, only attracting the attention of the public from time to time as a "literary eccentric". Official theologians, including Renan, wrote him off and, therefore, maintained a silence of death about him. And yet he was worth more than them all and did more than all of them in a question which interests us Socialists, too: the question of the historical origin of Christianity. On the occassion of his death, let us give a brief account of the present position on this question, and Bauer's contribution to its solution. The view that dominated from the free-thinkers of the Middle Ages to the Enlighteners of the 18th century, the latter included, that all religions, and therefore Christianity too, were the work of deceivers was no longer sufficient after Hegel had set philosophy the task of showing a rational evolution in world history. It is clear that if spontaneously arising religions like the fetish worship of the Negroes or the common primitive religion of the Aryans come to being without deception playing any part, deception by the priests soon becomes inevitable in their further development. But, in spite of all sincere fanaticism, artificial religions cannot even, at their foundation, do without deception and falsification of history. Christianity, too, has pretty achievements to boast of in this respect from the very beginning, as Bauer shows in his criticism of the New Testament. But that only confirms a general phenomenon and does not explain the particular case in question.
