The Life of John Duns (What follows here is the section on Scotus's life from The Cambridge Companion to Duns Scotus , corrected and amplified as more information comes to light.) We know very little with certainty about the details of Scotus's life and the chronology of his writings, and the evidence and arguments used to establish what we do know are sometimes forbiddingly complex. I make no attempt here to lay out all the speculations or even to adjudicate all the controversies. What follows is therefore a partial and inevitably controversial account of Scotus's life and works. It would, I believe, command wide acceptance among students of Scotus; I indicate some points of dispute in the text and offer extensive references for those who wish to explore these matters in more detail. I. Scotus's Life As a guide through the complexities of the narrative that follows, I offer first a chronology in tabular form. 'AY' stands for 'academic year, a period extending from early October to late June.

Synopsis
DUNS SCOTUS Franciscan , and studied theology at Oxford, under William de Vuarra (Varro). When the latter went to Paris, Duns succeeded to his chair, and taught in Oxford with great success. He is said to have had three thousand pupils. It was especially his keenness and subtlety which impressed people; for which reason he received the title of doctor subtilis . While in Oxford he wrote a commentary upon the Sentences of the Lombard Opus Oxoniense . About 1301 he went to Paris, and there he also lectured on the Sentences; which lectures afterwards were published under the title Reportata Parisiensia . Tn 1305 he obtained the degree of doctor. After the order of Clement V. he held a grand disputation with the Dominicans concernmg the immaculate conception of Mary. He came out victorious. Even the marble statue of the Virgin, standing in the disputation hall, bowed to him when he descended from the cathedra; and it became a rule in the university, that he who obtained a degree there should take an oath to defend the doctrine of the immaculate conception. In 1308 Duns was sent to Cologne, by the general of his order, to contend with the Beghards, who were numerous in those regions, and with the Dominicans , who refused to accept the new dogma. lie was received with great honors, but died in the same year from apoplexy.

Medieval Christian scholars used to bestow honorary titles upon their most brilliant colleagues. They named St. Thomas Aquinas "Doctor Angelicus" ("Angelic Doctor"); Roger Bacon "Doctor Mirabilis" ("Marvelous Doctor"); St. Bernard of Clairvaux, "Doctor Mellifluus" ("Honey-spoken Doctor"), etc. The brilliant young Franciscan theologian, Blessed Duns Scotus, was given the title "Doctor Subtilis" ("Subtle Teacher"). And sharp-minded he was! There has been some debate over John's nationality. Because both the Irish and Scottish were anciently called "Scots," the Irish have tried to claim him as an Irishman. By now, however, it seems pretty clear that he was a Scotsman, born in the little town of Duns in southeastern Scotland. John's family seems to have had the same name as the town. His paternal uncle, a Franciscan friar of Dumfries, Scotland, was named Elias Duns. It was Elias who gave John his earliest education. When he was 15, John himself entered the Franciscans, and around 1290 was sent for further schooling to Oxford University. Once ordained a priest in 1291, he was dispatched to Paris to study for the masterate of theology. His teacher was the eminent Spaniard Gonzalvo of Balboa. Friar John came back to Oxford in 1296, and from 1297 to 1301 lectured on the theology of Peter Lombard. (Peter's book, the

He put Aristotelian thought to the service of Christian theology and was the founder of a school of scholasticism called Scotism, which was often opposed to the Thomism of the followers of St. Thomas Aquinas . Scotism has had considerable influence on Roman Catholic thought and has been to some degree sponsored by the Franciscans. In metaphysics, Duns taught the "univocity of being"; by this he meant that being must be regarded as the ultimate abstraction that can be applied to everything that exists. He is also known for the use of the "formal distinction," a subtle manner of distinguishing between different aspects of the same thing. The Scotists deny that matter is the principle of individuality and insist that individuation of things is caused by a determination called "haecceitas" or "thisness." According to Scotus, the essence of things as well as their existence depends not on the Divine Intellect but on the Divine Will; his philosophy accordingly is voluntaristic in its entire spirit. It is possible to prove the existence of God, but the ontological proof of St.

Each volume in this series of companions to major philosophers contains specially commissioned essays by an international team of scholars, together with a substantial bibliography, and will serve as a reference work for students and non-specialists. One aim of the series is to dispel the intimidation such readers often feel when faced with the work of a difficult and challenging thinker. John Duns Scotus (1265/6–1308) was (along with Aquinas and Ockham) one of the three principal figures in medieval philosophy and theology, with an influence on modern thought arguably even greater than that of Aquinas. The essays in this volume systematically survey the full range of Scotus’ thought. They take care to explain the technical details of his writing in lucid terms and demonstrate the relevance of his work to contemporary philosophical debate. New readers will find this the most convenient and accessible guide to Scotus currently available. Contents Introduction: the life and works of John Duns the Scot Thomas Williams

7 november 2003 Verlichte geest Kerstavond 1299.

www.RomanCatholicism.org A Treatise on God as First Principle By Blessed John Duns Scotus 1.1 May the First Principle of things grant me to believe, to understand and to reveal what may please his majesty and may raise our minds to contemplate him. 1.2 O Lord our God, true teacher that you are, when Moses your servant asked you for your name that he might proclaim it to the children of Israel, you, knowing what the mind of mortals could grasp of you, replied: "I am who am," thus disclosing your blessed name. You are truly what it means to be, you are the whole of what it means to exist. This, if it be possible for me, I should like to know by way of demonstration. Help me then, O Lord, as I investigate how much our natural reason can learn about that true being which you are if we begin with the being which you have predicated of yourself. 1.3 Although being has many properties it would not be irrelevant to consider, it is to the more fruitful source of the essential order that I turn, proceeding according to the following plan. I shall set forth in this first chapter the four divisions of order. From this one can gather how many kinds of essential orders exist. 1.4 For a division to be clear it is necessary (1) that the members resulting from the division be indicated and thus be shown to be contained in what is divided, (2) that the mutually exclusive character of the parts be manifest, and (3) that the classification exhaust the subject matter to be divided. The first requirement will be met in this chapter; the others, in the second. With no attempt at justification, then, in the present chapter I shall simply enumerate the divisions and explain the meaning of the parts.

Johannes Scotus Erigena, John the Scot
    Irish Theologian and NeoPlatonist Philosopher
Irish theologian and NeoPlatonist philosopher. Translated and made commentaries upon Pseudo- Dionysius. The name Erigena means the same as Scotus, 'born in Ireland'. He is eulogised by Coulton as 'coming out of the darkness like a meteor', and by Russell as 'the most astonishing figure of the early Medieval period'. Though a singular and enigmatic figure who stood outside the mainstream, it is now widely accepted that John Scotus possessed the finest and most original intellect of the early Middle Ages. He was highly proficient in Greek, quite rare at that time in mainland Europe, and was thus well-placed for translation work. Though born in Ireland he later (c845) moved to France, where he took over the school, the Palatine Academy, at the invitation of King Charles I (Charles the Bald, 823-77). He remained in France for at least 30 years. At the request of the Greek Emperor Michael (in c858) John undertook some translation into Latin of the works of Pseudo- Dionysius and added his own commentary. He was thus the first to introduce the ideas of NeoPlatonism from the Greek into the Western European intellectual tradition, where they were to have a deeply formative influence over Christian theology. His frank, bold and free-thinking writing remained the subject of controversy for centuries. It was filled with rationalistic opinions and speculations, and was completely devoid of censorship or deference to orthodox theology. His work 'De divina praedestinationae', (On Divine Predestination) was written c851 to support Hincmar (c806-82) in the Predestination debate with Gottschalk (c820-68). Many thought it went too far, and was thus condemned by the Councils of Valence (855) and Langres (859) as 'pultes Scotorum' (Irishman's porridge) and 'the invention of the devil'.
