John Duns Scotus (1083-1308)
We may not hear too much today about Duns Scotus, Franciscan scholastic philosopher and theologian, but his teachings had an enormous influence on Catholic theology right up until the end of the 18th century. It was John Scotus, from Duns in Berwickshire, who pioneered the classical defense of the doctrine that the mother of Jesus was conceived without original sin, the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception that is still important in the Roman Catholic Church. Scots also defended the papacy against the French king's wish to tax the church to pay for his wars. His great work of theology, showing his speculative mind, is his "Ordinatio." 1. Life and Works
1.1 The life of John Duns the Scot
It appears that Scotus began his formal studies at Oxford in October 1288 and concluded them in June 1301. In the academic year 1298-99 he commented on the Sentences of Peter Lombard. We know that by the fall of 1302 Scotus was lecturing on the Sentences Sentences not long thereafter. On 18 November 1304 Scotus was appointed the Franciscan regent master in theology at Paris. For reasons no one quite understands, Scotus was transferred to the Franciscan studium at Cologne, probably beginning his duties as lector in October 1307. He died there in 1308; the date of his death is traditionally given as 8 November.

Champion Of Mary's Immaculate Conception Blessed John Duns Scotus by Brother John M. Samaha, S.M. The year 2004 marks the sesquicentennial of the dogmatic definition of the Immaculate Conception of Mary by Blessed Pope Pius IX in 1854. To celebrate the centenary of the infallible proclamation of this dogma of faith, Pope Pius XII, a great apostle of Mary, declared 1954 a Marian Year, the first. In 1858 Our Lady appeared to St. Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes, France. When Bernadette asked the beautiful lady who she is, Mary identified herself in these words: "I am the Immaculate Conception." This happened four short years after the solemn definition. For the centenary of that miraculous event, the Marian-minded Pope Pius XII pronounced 1958 the Lourdes Year. Though belief in Mary's Immaculate Conception never wavered among the truly faithful, for centuries theologians were at a loss to explain adequately and with satisfactory doctrinal clarity this privilege accorded the Mother of Christ. Then in "the greatest of centuries" a humble and brilliant friar brought resolution to this knotty question: How was Mary, who was like all human beings in need of redemption, conceived without sin? To the keen and penetrating mind of the thirteenth century Franciscan philosopher and theologian, Blessed John Duns Scotus, all Christendom owes respect and honor. For it was Duns Scotus who

John Duns Scotus (c. November 8 ) was a theologian and philosopher . Some may argue that during his tenure at Oxford, the notion of what differentiates theology from philosophy and science began in earnest. He was born in Duns Scotland . Ordained a priest in Northampton, England , he studied and taught at Oxford and Paris and probably also at Cambridge . Finally, he came to Cologne in 1307. He was one of the most important Franciscan theologians and was the founder of Scotism, a special form of Scholasticism . He was known as Doctor Subtilis because of his subtle merging of differing views. However later philosophers were not so complimentary about his work and the modern word dunce comes from the name "Dunse" given to his followers. He died in Cologne and is buried in the Church of the Minorites in Cologne. His sarcophagus bears the Latin inscription: " Scotia me genuit. Anglia me suscepit. Gallia me docuit. Colonia me tenet. " ("Scotland brought me forth. England sustained me. France taught me. Cologne holds me.")
