Donald Davidson - (1893-1968) Nashville By Venera Gentry
Austin Peay University at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky I. Biography Donald Davidson is a poet whose creative, artistic, descriptive style gives his poems a unique characteristic that catches the reader's attention and interest. Davidson was born in 1893, in Campbellsville, Tennessee. The most profound influence in his early life was his father, who provided the young son instruction in the classical languages and who read a great deal to his children in the evenings. This way Davidson became impressed with literature. Also his father taught him the pleasures of native music. Davidson's mother also influenced him. She was responsible for instilling in Davidson a deep appreciation for classical music. Being a music teacher by profession, his mother taught him to play the piano. Throughout his life, he became interested in understanding music from the composing point of view and later on he composed one original operetta. Another source of influence in Davidson's life at home was his father's vast library filled with many classical authors. Various Tennessean narratives about Indian and pioneer times caught the young boy's interest, as well as plays of Shakespeare or poems by Poe. His father cautioned him against reading so much of the popular sentimental or European literature and did not believe that children should enter school very young. Since the young Davidson was a little wonder when he entered school he was placed right in the fifth grade. Later on, while in school his father was also among his teachers.

An interview with Donald Davidson Lepore: Tell me a bit about the early days. Davidson: I was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 6, 1917 to Clarence ("Davie") Herbert Davidson and Grace Cordelia Anthony. My mother's father's name was "Anthony" but her mother had married twice and by coincidence both her husbands were named "Anthony". My mother had a half-brother who was directly descended from Susan B Anthony, but I am not because I'm from the other "Anthony". I used to think I was related, because I knew my mother was named "Anthony" and I knew Susan B. Anthony was in the picture, but it's false. My mother's family lived in Gloversville, NY, and at that time it was a great place for manufacturing gloves. My mother's father had a foundry in which he manufactured the stamps with which they stamped out the parts of gloves. They were moderately prosperous. They had five or six children, and they had a great big summer place on a lake. My father was born and grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey. He came from poor parents. His father was American born, but his father, my great grandfather, came from Scotland with his family; and very shortly after he got to this country, he abandoned his family and disappeared into the west and was never heard from again.

Donald Davidson
Donald Davidson è professore presso l'Università di California, a Berkeley. La vasta produzione che investe il campo dell'epistemologia, della filosofia del linguaggio e della filosofia della mente lo qualifica come uno dei maestri del pensiero analitico contemporaneo. I saggi principali di Davidson sono raccolti nei volumi Actions and Events (1980) e Inquiries into Truth and Interpretation (1984). Infatti un imponente numero di studi critici sul pensiero di Davidson è riunito nelle due antologie Actions and Events: Perspectives on the Philosophy of Donald Davidson (1985) e Truth and Interpretation: Perspectives on the Philosophy of Donald Davidson (1986) edite da Ernest Lepore e in The Philosophy of Donald Davidson (1999) edito da Lewis Edwin Hahn. Al pensiero davidsoniano sono dedicati i volumi di B. Ramberg

Donald Davidson
American philosopher whose groundbreaking work studied language to help us understand who we are
Jane O'Grady
Thursday September 4, 2003
The Guardian

Donald Davidson, who has died aged 86, was one of the greatest philosophers of the late 20th century. Unusually for a philosopher dealing with problems by analysing language, the various topics he tackled seem to constitute a grand design (if not a totally spelt-out one). He struggled to resolve the crucial philosophical issue of the time: how to reconcile science and materialism with our sense of ourselves as communicating and meaningful rational beings. A professor at University of California, Berkeley, having taught at Queens College (New York), Stanford, Princeton and Chicago, he perhaps had even more kudos in Britain than in the US, revered here for his ability to be both scientific and anti-scientific simultaneously.

Davidson's Anomalous Monism
Donald Davidson, in an excerpt from his paper "Psychology as Philosophy" argues that:
  • "Not all human motion is behavior ... but where there is behavior, intention is relevant." We may not always do what we intend (e.g., man who stomps on his own hat thinking it is the hat of his rival). But "happenings cease to be actions or behavior when there is no way of describing them in terms of intentions." (319) For Sartre, our experience of ourselves is essentially intentional. We cannot help but see the world from the perspective of a "for-itself", wanting, hoping, fearing, valuing. In all these modes of being, we freely create (freely since all being is just in-itself and not incomplete in any way, and thus is unable to force any particular projection of ). And our freedom is the source of anguish and flight into bad faith. Davidson begins from ordinary language rather than personal experience. According to Davidson, "intention is conceptually central" (319) to what we usually mean by a person’s "behavior". If psychology and other human sciences are mainly concerned with human behavior, and Davidson is right that intention is conceptually central to behavior, then psychology and the human sciences must be sciences mainly concerned with intentionality. (And Skinner must be dead wrong.)
