The temple, cemetery and family mansion of Confucius, the great philosopher, politician and educator of the 6th–5th centuries B.C., are located at Qufu, in Shandong Province. Built to commemorate him in 478 B.C., the temple has been destroyed and reconstructed over the centuries; today it comprises more than 100 buildings. The cemetery contains Confucius' tomb and the remains of more than 100,000 of his descendants. The small house of the Kong family developed into a gigantic aristocratic residence, of which 152 buildings remain. The Qufu complex of monuments has retained its outstanding artistic and historic character due to the devotion of successive Chinese emperors over more than 2,000 years.

Biography of confucius and information on his ideal of government.

Confucian Political Theory
Considered as the most influential intellectual tradition in East Asia, Confucianism had generally been blamed by many as the responsible for the backwardness prevalent over the entire region for more than a century since the intrusion of the Western powers. Confucianism concentrates mainly on harmony, peace, hierarchy and statue-quo, it has also spiritual and religious, ethical and moral, economic and socio-political aspects. It was considered as the main social education doctrine in China and other Far East countries in various dynasties. Modern scholars are discussing if Confucian countries like Japan, Korea and Singapore can experiencing a great economic prosperity and at same time a social stability, therefore, is Confucianism the real responsible for their historical failure against westerners? When he died he was revered almost as a god. Temples were erected in his honor in every city of China. Confucian temple carries the role in educating the ruling elite and in formulating an ideology of "Jen" and "Li" to unify the thought of the intellectuals. His grave at Kufow, in what is now Shandong Province, became a place of pilgrimage. Because Confucius' primary concern lay in social relations, proper conduct, and social harmony, he was revered as the greatest of sages throughout most of China' s history. His teaching, Confucianism, was the state teaching from the beginning of the Han Dynasty in 202 BC to the end of the imperial period in 1911.

Confucius (born Kong Qiu, styled Zhong Ni) was born in the village of Zou in the country of Lu in 551 B.C., a poor descendant of a deposed noble family. As a child, he held make-believe temple rituals; as a young adult, he quickly earned a reputation for fairness, politeness and love of learning, and he was reputed to be quite tall. He traveled extensively and studied at the imperial capital, Zhou, where he is said to have met and spoke with Lao Zi, the founder of Daoism. Upon his return to Lu, he gained renown as a teacher, but when he was 35, Duke Zhao of Lu led his country to war, was routed and fled to the neighboring country of Qi; in the disorder following the battle, Confucius followed. Duke Zhao frequently came to him for advice, but upon counsel of one of his ministers, he decided against granting land to Confucius and gradually stopped seeking his counsel. When other nobles began plotting against Confucius' position, Duke Zhao refused to intervene, and Confucius returned to Lu. But conditions there were no better than before, and Confucius retired from public life to concentrate on teaching and studying.

Jen (Humaneness)
XII.22 : Fan-ch'ih asked about jen. The Master said, "It is to love all men." He asked about knowledge. "It is to know all men." Fan ch'ih did not immediately understand these answers. The Master said, "Employ the upright and put aside all the crooked; in this way, the crooked can be made to be upright." VII.29 : The Master said, "Is humaneness a thing remote? I wish to be humane, and behold! humaneness is at hand." VI.28 : Tzu-kung said, "Suppose I put the case of a man who extensively confers benefits on the people, and is able to assist everyone, what would you say about him? Might he be called perfectly humane?" The Master said, "Why speak only of humaneness in connection with him? Must he not have the qualities of a sage? . . . Now the man of perfect humaneness, wishing to be established himself, seeks also to establish others; wishing to be enlarged himself, he seeks also to enlarge others. To be able to judge of others by what is nearby in ourselves, that is what we might call the art of humaneness." XV.23

Confucius (Click to Zoom in) I
There was one young man of humble origin named Yan Hui who wanted to be accepted as Confucius's student. But the family was so poor that they even had difficulty providing themselves with daily necessaries. He was afraid he would be rejected as he could not afford the tuition required. One day he came to where Confucius was giving lectures. He saw a few men sitting under a big tree and overheard Confucius say, "I'm ready to accept anyone that can bring 10 pieces of preserved meat for tuition, whatever his origin. " Yan Hui was greatly heartened by this. He hastened back home and told his friends Zi Lu and Zi Gong about it. A few days later, all three became Confucius's students. Even a man named Gong Yechang who had just been released from prison came under Confucius's tutelage.
Confucius often lectured to his students on the theme of "benevolence", preaching the importance of loving others. One day, he and his students happened to be journeying past the foot of the Mount Tai and saw a woman weeping mournfully at the side of a grave. When asked why she was weeping like that, she said to Confucius , still sobbing, "My father-in-law, my husband and my son had all been eaten up by tigers at this place. " "Why not moving away from here as soon as you can?" asked Confucius. "But the government here is not that tyrannous!" On hearing this, Confucius turned to his students and said, "So you see, a tyrannous government is even more to be feared than fierce tigers, even harsher. "

The Life of Confucius
Of all eastern philosophers, Confucius, born in 550 B.C., is considered the greatest. His teachings are foundational to Asian cultures. His writings, The Five Classics, the collection of ancient Chinese literature, and The Four Books , a collection of Confucius' and his disciple's teachings, was for centuries the standard curriculum for Chinese education. Confucius' teachings and biography were written many years after his death and were edited by his disciples. Although historians present various accounts of his life, there are some basic facts that we are reasonably sure of, and from which we can outline the major events of his life. Confucius was born in the province of Lu, in northern China. He was born into a family of humble circumstance, and his father died at a young age. He began studying under the village tutor and at the age of fifteen he devoted his life to study. At twenty, he married but soon divorced his wife and had an aloof relationship with his son and daughter. In his twenties, he became a teacher and gathered a group of loyal disciples. Confucius lived during the Chou Dynasty (1100 B.C. to 256 B.C.). At this time, the land was divided among feudal lords. The moral and social order was in a state of decay. Confucius sought a way to restore the cultural-political order. He believed that reform would come through educating the leaders in the classics and in his philosophy. He therefore sought a political position of influence, from which he could implement his principles.

He was not well known when he was alive, but today he is the most remembered person from ancient China. Confucius was born in BC , in a period of Chinese history known as the Age of Warring States. China was divided into many small kingdoms. The kings fought each other and were often cruel to the people they ruled. Confucius understood that there could be peace and justice under a good government. But he knew that good government was only possible when there were good leaders. Confucius was concerned with how people treat one another. Confucius said, "What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others." He stressed that any person, rich or poor, could become superior. The Chinese word jen refers to the kindness and love each person should have for all others and for nature. Confucius taught that the person who develops

James Legge's translation of the , or the Analects of Confucius , first appeared in 1861. It was part of a much larger work published by Legge under the title The Chinese Classics , which rendered into English seven of the nine classics of Chinese literature. Legge also went on to translate the other two classics and the works of the Taoists Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu in a series published by Oxford University Press, The Sacred Books of the East This site presents James Legge's translation of The Analects in full. Mr. Legge reproduced in his translation the original Chinese and wrote a great deal of commentary concerning how he arrived at his particular translation of the original Chinese. These are left out. On the other hand, Mr. Legge also wrote a brief description of each chapter, which this site provides as part of each chapter header. This text was last revised the 15th of July, 2003.

Who is Confucius?
Confucius lived from 551 BCE to 479 BCE during a time when imperial rule was breaking down in China. Learn about his life and philosophy.
Confucius (K'ung Fu-tzu) lived from 551 BCE to 479 BCE during a time when imperial rule was breaking down in China. Confucius was of noble decent, but his family had lost its wealth and he grew up in relative poverty. His birth place was in the state of Lu which is part of the modern state of Shantung. Confucius settled down in the state of Lu and opened a school in his home at which he would teach anyone who came to learn regardless of their ability to pay. He flirted with the political arena, attempting to convince his contemporary political leaders the virtue of living a noble life. After 10 years or so of dismay in the political arena Confucius settled down to his school and taught for the rest of his life. bodyOffer(19813) Not much is reliably known about Confucius since the first biography of him was written 375 years or more after his death by Ssu-ma Ch'ien, an unreliable historian. Since so many years had passed since Confucius' death and because he was such a reputed noble and wise man, many legends had arisen about hime by the time Ssu-ma Ch'ien collected information on his life. Perhaps a more telling and more accurate account of Confucius can be found by analyzing his Analects, a collection of Confucius' sayings compiled by his students immediately following his death.
