Helene Cixous: "The Laugh of the Medusa"
NOTE:
In Anglo-American academic discussion, it is common to refer to Helene Cixous, Luce Irigaray, Julia Kristeva, and others as "the French feminists." This terminology assumes that somehow these theorists represent or speak for ALL feminists who are French, thus silencing the voices and ideas of other feminists who are French, such as Christine Delphy, Elisabeth Badinter, Francoise Picq, Benoite Grould, Genevieve Fraisse, Giselle Halimi, and many others. To avoid the imperialism inherent in the Anglo-American construction of Cixous, Irigaray, and Kristeva as "the French feminists," I will refer to these theorists as "poststructuralist theoretical feminists."
My thanks to Stephanie Cordellier for her lucid email comments and corrections regarding the politics of labeling on this issue.
For an updated and revised version of this lecture, see Poststructuralist Feminist Theory: Helene Cixous or the home page for English 2010, Fall Semester 2001 You've probably noticed a difference between what Sandra Gilbert is saying in her essay "Literary Paternity" and what Helene Cixous and Luce Irigaray are talking about in "The Laugh of the Medusa" and "This Sex Which is Not One." Part of that difference lies in the fact that Gilbert is a pragmatic feminist coming largely out of a humanist tradition as a literary critic, and Cixous and Irigaray are poststructuralist theoretical feminists. They represent two distinct (different but related) branches of contemporary feminist theory.

Biography
(God's First Name). In 1968 she became , but didn't publish her thesis, L'Exil de James Joyce ou l' art du remplacement (translated as The Exile of James Joyce The year from 1969 to 1972 were an exciting period for French intellectuals, working with the possibilities released in the aftermath of May 1968. It was during these years that Cixous published her first fictional texts: Dedans Inside , and Neutre (The Third Body, Beginnings, and Neuter, 1970-72). Cixous questions traditional power structures, examining political and libidinal economies as inspired by the work of Marx and Freud. She is an advocate for the freeing of writing, and the self through writing. In 1974 Cixous published (Nobody's Name), which is a collection of essays on Freud, Hofmann, Kleist, Poe and Joyce. In these texts she explores the associations between the unified or phallic subject, narcissism and death. She reveals how the dialectical structure in writing, specifically in these authors, trap women in a limited exchange or economy, dominated by a desire for death. Inspired by the work of Georges Bataille, she offers a general economy of the gift, related to expenditure and loss. Exchange was a dominant theme in her writing, as she questioned its relationship to alterity. If the subject only exists in a differential relationship with others, then to think through new modes of exchange is a method toward social change. Cixous felt that there must be linguistic change to effect social change, so she studied the affects of exchange on language and writing.

Poststructuralist Feminist Theory
"The Laugh of the Medusa" Helene Cixous
These are themes very similar to those taken up by the poststructuralist feminist theorists, particularly Helene Cixous and Luce Irigaray.
Let's start looking at poststructuralist feminist literary theory (or theories of writing and language) by looking at Alice Jardine's "Gynesis." Published in 1982, this article worked to explain poststructuralist feminist thought to an American audience of academics and feminists who were almost completely unfamiliar with the ideas she was presentingso Jardine provides a good introduction to poststructuralist ideas in general. Her article starts out by talking about developments in Paris intellectual circles in the late 1960s and early 1970s.. She points out that "french feminism," as she calls it, wasn't like American "women's liberation," in that it wasn't a separatist movement, one favoring women and excluding or vilifying men. Rather, "french feminism" (or what we will call "poststructuralist feminist theory") emerges from women theorists who are direct disciples of male poststructuralist theorists, including Derrida, Lacan, Foucault, and Althusser.
While Anglo-American feminist literary critics in the early 1980s were focusing on creating analyses and critiques of fictional representations of women in men's and women's writings, these poststructuralist feminist theorists were studying how gender was created and/or destabilized within the structure of language itself, following Lacan; they examined how subject positions were gendered as "Man" or "Woman," masculine or feminine, rather than looking at individual gendered beings and how they were portrayed in literature.

Hélène Cixous (Twayne's World Author Series, No 860) by Lynn Kettler Penrod In this highly accessible introduction to a most complicated writer, Lynn Penrod attempts to remove the barrier to Cixous's works for the English-speaking reader - a barrier that derives from basic problems of translation and from major theoretical shifts in literary studies over the past 20 years. Penrod presents Cixous as a writer exemplifying an extraordinarily rich vein of women's writing in contemporary France - from her academic work centering on James Joyce , her copious essays on philosophy and theory, and her now-classic essays on ecriture feminine to her novels, stories, "fictions," and dramatic works. With its delight in wordplay and punning, the playfulness of its language, and its characteristic poetic style, Cixous's work, Penrod contends, provides an opportunity for exploring language in its purest form... I could describe the early Cixous who earned her doctorate for a thesis on the literature of James Joyce and was soon after awarded the prestigious appointment at the University of Paris VIII as Chair for the department of English literature. This Cixous has written a number of articles and books in both literary criticism and philosophy. Or I could describe the Cixous who discovered the world of creative writing, where she initiated a kind of fictional autobiographical style that has inspired writers, philosophers, and literary critics alike. Then there is Cixous the playwright. Her numerous plays, screenplays and even an opera libretto have been both popularly and critically acclaimed. But perhaps the personage that is best known internationally is Cixous the feminist. In 1974 she created the

Quotes Censor the body and you censor breath and speech at the same time. Write yourself. Your body must be heard.
"The Laugh of the Medusa" Writing: as if I had the urge to go on enjoying, to feel full, to push, to feel the force of my muscles, and my harmony, to be pregnant and at the same time to give myself the joys of parturition, the joys of both the mother and the child. To give birth to myself and to nurse myself, too. Life summons life. Pleasure seeks renewal.
"Coming to Writing" Myth ends up having our hides. Logos opens up its great maw and swallows us whole.
"Coming to Writing" Contextual Setting Feminism, it's that infamous "f" word that makes even those of us who consider ourselves well inside her walls a bit uncomfortable. Even within academics, feminists have often been unfairly labeled as man-hating feminazi's, and guarders of political correctness. The truth is, although you may disagree with some of the politics feminist theorists espouse, if you were engaged in the politicization of rhetoric within the classroom found in theorists such as Eagleton, Berlin, and Friere and Macedo, then you probably fall into the same camp as many feminist scholars and certainly many feminist rhetoricians. Like the theorists we have read in the last couple of weeks, many feminists have a much broader agenda that deals with the epistemic nature of our rhetoric
