Cornelius Castoriadis
Cornelius Castoriadis who died the day after Christmas 1997 was a tough and tough-minded intellectual and survivor of revolutionary politics who, more recently, gained considerable academic recognition. He was born in Constantinople and would have been part of the Greek exodus at that time of mutual ethnic cleansing between Greece and Turkey. By his own reckoning he began reading philosophy at the age of 13, an activity soon politicized by taking place under the dictatorship of General Metaxas. He became a member of the Greek Communist Party at the age of 17 but three years later, when the Party was gaining real power through its somewhat tortured relation with the mass resistance organisation EAM-ELAS, he became a Trotskyist. Another 3 years later in 1945, so the bald details go, he fled to Paris on both Fascist and Communist death lists. I do not know what then it can have meant to be a Trotskyist in 1942-5 Greece, but am sure it would have been quite possible to be on the two death-lists of both sides. In Paris he got a job as an economist with the OECD, and from then on, with a three year break and later as a psychoanalyst, always worked professionally as he put it. At the same time, despite the professional job he did not gain French citizenship until 1970, which meant that in principle he could have been deported at any time with 24 hours notice. I mention this since most Western European revolutionary socialists have not had such experience, and to forestall any jeers or sneers at this man.

Cornelius Castoriadis, 1922 to 1997
In "Workers' Councils, Castoriadis and the Situationist International" (NOT BORED! #26, November 1996), we demonstrated that subsequent to Guy Debord's membership in both the SI and Cornelius Castoriadis's Socialisme ou Barbarie group in the 1960-1961 period the situationists adopted and claimed as their own the basic programmatic points that had been outlined and explored in great detail by Castoriadis in Socialisme ou Barbarie in the 1950s. Those basic points were workers' management and power to workers' councils. We noted that the situationists, especially after the May 1968 revolution, never really elaborated or expanded upon these basic points, and yet continued to make them the center of their position on modern revolution. The fact that the situationists' readership grew in both size and activity during the 1961 to 1967 period suggested to us the validity and richness of these basic points, even when they are left undeveloped. Finally, we noted that, despite the SI's indebtedness to S. ou B. and to Castoriadis in particular, the situationists refused to acknowledge it and were openly hostile to Castoriadis, whom they insulted relentlessly. In this essay which we intend, along with "Workers' Councils, Castoriadis and the Situationist International," to be a contribution to an appreciation of the work of Castoriadis, who died in late 1997 at the age of 75 we will briefly explore the development of the S. ou B. group after 1961, that is, after Debord's departure. Our assumption will be this: just as the situationists needed the ideas and work of S. ou B. to transform the SI from an informal to a formal revolutionary organization, Castoriadis needed the ideas and work of the SI to give S. ou B. a genuinely "new orientation." The paradoxes here are that, though the situationists simplified (even reduced) the ideas of S. ou B., their organization flourished in the early and mid-1960s, while the S. ou B. group, despite the rigor, complexity and originality of its theoretical work, did not.

Democracy
Nature
As some of
Castoriadis and the democratic tradition
The death of Castoriadis gave rise to the expression of very diverse comments on a significant but also controversial intellectual output. Thus, on the one side, the intellectual establishment in France and his native Greece expressed an uncritical admiration for his work, without any deeper understanding of its radical anti-establishment meaning, usually on the basis of the anti-Marxist . In contrast, in his late work, transcending not just Marxism but in a sense the socialist project itself " The first implication one may derive from the Castoriadian definition of autonomy is that individual autonomy is impossible without social autonomy and vice versa. Furthermore, individual autonomy is only possible when the social individuals take a direct part in the formation and implementation of the social laws which condition their activity: "the autonomy of individuals has as a context the equal participation of all in power, without which there is obviously no freedom, just as there is no equality without freedom. Socialisme ou Barbarie , J-F. Lyotard, Castoriadis, far from joining the post-modernist bandwagon as the latter did, showed its true social significance. Thus, although he recognised that there are certain valid elements in post-modernism (for instance, its rejection of the conception of History as linear or dialectical Progress etc.), he dismissed the complete relativism of post-modernists who gave to every way of thinking, every tradition, not only equal rights but also equal value

Cornelius Castoriadis Dies at 75
Philosopher and Political Thinker Inspired May '68 Rebellion in France
Philosopher of the social imagination, co-founder of the legendary group and journal Socialisme ou Barbarie Praise now flows in. Le Monde 's obituary, written by long-time friend Edgar Morin with whom he coauthored a book on May '68, bore the title "Titan of the Spirit." C. L. R. James scholar Kent Worcester spoke for many left libertarians when he called Castoriadis "our Isaiah," referring to another recently deceased freethinker, Isaiah Berlin. Even the French Communist Party newspaper, , acknowledged the significance of this radical anti-Communist opponent, labeling him "an essential dissident." And yet Castoriadis's ideas long remained better known than his name. To avoid deportation from France, he had to write under pseudonyms. Beginning in the 1960s Socialisme ou Barbarie's sister organization London Solidarityand later Philadelphia Solidaritycirculated "Chaulieu" and "Cardan" translations with a certain success. Only in the 1970s did Castoriadis gain French citizenship and begin to publish under his own name so that student radicals moved by his ideas might discover who had inspired them. A first English translation appeared in 1984. 1997 marked a watershed year with the appearance of a new collection of writings

CLASS AGAINST CLASS
Welcome to Class Against Class on behalf of we work for them We have no particular 'party line',we only argue for the centrality of working class self-activity in any attempts to go beyond the existing social relations, and take as our starting point the recognition that: Meaningful action, for revolutionaries, is whatever increases the confidence, the autonomy, the initiative, the participation, the solidarity, the equalitarian tendencies and the self -activity of the masses and whatever assists in their demystification. Sterile and harmful action is whatever reinforces the passivity of the masses, their apathy, their cynicism, their differentiation through hierarchy, their alienation, their reliance on others to do things for them and the degree to which they can therefore be manipulated by others - even by those allegedly acting on their behalf.
