Burke, Edmund A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful, by Edmund Burke (1729-97), was the early, revolutionary work of an author who went down in history as both a politician and the arch-theorist of anti-Jacobin conservatism ( Reflections on the Revolution in France, 1790). Yet the Enquiry begun in the 1740s, published in 1757, and revised in 1759became one of the most popular eighteenth-century treatises on aesthetics. Its originality does not consist so much in its approach to the aesthetic problem, essentially a psychological one, with its origins in John Locke, nor in its "Introduction on Taste," added in the second edition. In this discussion, intervening in a debate that was in full swing both in England and in France (as in Alexander Gerard's An Essay on Taste, 1759, which includes English translations of texts on the issue by Voltaire, Jean-Baptiste Le Rond d'Alembert, and the baron de Montesquieu), Burke draws conclusions developed over the course of the whole Enquiry in order to demonstrate the universality of taste, which he characterizes, not at the level of judgment as

Burke, Edmund (1729-1797) British Statesman and Political Thinker: Edmund Burke was a leading British philosopher and statesman who eventually supported the patriots in their bid for independence. Burke initially advocated parliamentary supremacy over the colonies, but only on terms acceptable to the colonies. Two of his speeches to Parliament later became famous: one on American taxation (1774) and one on conciliation (1775). He suggested a relationship between Britain and her American colonies in which parliamentary sovereignty would be asserted only with the consent of the colonies, and only for purposes which the colonies recognized as being of common interest. After the American victory at Saratoga, however, Burke asserted that the American colonies could not be retained. Burke also wrote books of political and aesthetic philosophy, and was known as an eloquent orator.

Edmund Burke (1729 - 1797) A statesman, orator and political thinker, Edmund Burke championed conservatism in opposition to Revolutionary France. Born in Ireland, in 1765 Burke entered Parliament and became active in the hot debate over the crown's powers. Burke pressed for parliamentary control of royal patronage and expenditure, in 1782 becoming closely involved with an act regulating the civil list paid by parliament to the crown. Britain's imposition on America of measures including the Stamp Act in 1765 provoked violent colonial opposition. Burke argued that British policy had been inflexible and called for more pragmatism. He believed that government should be a co-operative relationship between rulers and subjects and that, while the past was important, a willingness to adapt to the inevitability of change could - hopefully - reaffirm traditional values under new circumstances. He also maintained a keen interest in India. He concluded that Indian governmental corruption had to be resolved by removing patronage from interested parties. He proposed that India be governed by independent commissioners in London, but a bill to this end was defeated, prompting impeachment proceedings against Warren Hastings, governor-general of Bengal.
