Edmund Burke
Protestant historian Campbell thus closes his biographical sketch of Bishop Burke: "The Dominion of Canada in its wide extent has seen few, if any, of its prelates who died more respected and regretted by all classes; more beloved and idolized by his own flock; and whose memory as a great, enlightened, and liberal-minded prelate is looked up to with so much veneration." His most important writings are "The First Principles of Christianity" and "The Ministry of the Church" (Dublin, 1817). ALEXANDER MCNEIL

But his treatise on aesthetics, particularly its discussion of sublimity, is a founding document of Gothicism and the supernaturalist genres which developed from it. Edmund Burke
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Edmund Burke January 12 July 9 ) was an Irish philosopher and statesman , remembered principally for his criticism of the French Revolution and his discussion of "the sublime". He was a founder of the Annual Register and is regarded as the "father" of modern conservatism Respected as a magnificent orator throughout his 30 year parlimentary career, Burke was often, perhaps unfairly, accused of inconsistency. He defended the English Revolution of 1688 , and yet attacked the French Revolution bitterly. He was infuriated at the notion that Britain should learn from the French experience and allow all citizens the vote, and argued that traditonal ruling practices in general and the monarchy in particular were essential elements of a stable, ordered society. Burke pitted the chaotic, uncontrollable changes of the French Revolution against (as he saw it) the British tradition of order and liberty. To Burke, the moral claim of the revolution to be in defence of the natural "rights of man" was a nonsense: although the British parliament depended on the approval of the British people for its authority to rule, this did not mean that citizens had the right to choose their rulers. Burke was a ruthless critic, however, of the excesses of established government: he campaigned against the persecution of Catholics in

EDMUND BURKE
Burke was born in Dublin, probably on 1 January 1729. On graduating from Trinity College, Dublin, in 1748 he studied law at the Middle Temple in London. Seeking a literary career, he published A Vindication of Natural Society (1756), a satire on rationalist philosophy, and Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful (1757), a treatise on aesthetics. Burke was quickly taken up by Goldsmith, Sheridan, Reynolds and other worthies, and was a founder member of Samuel Johnson's Club. In 1758 he was invited to edit the first Annual Register and continued to do so for almost twenty years. In 1761 Burke became private secretary to the chief secretary in Ireland, W. G. Hamilton. After a breach with Hamilton in 1765, he became private secretary to Lord Rockingham, who briefly headed a Whig administration at Westminster. He entered parliament in 1766 as MP for Wendover and later sat for Bristol - losing that seat for insisting that he was a representative of his constituents and not their delegate - and Malton. Burke had a distinguished parliamentary career, raising the standard of debate and fostering the party system. He took the lead in impeaching Warren Hastings, the former governor-general of India, in 1787. Though he never held a major office of state, his views have influenced politicians for two centuries.

Edmund Burke's Legacy By Andrew Webster
A Tribute on the 200th Anniversary of his Death
ON 9th JULY 1797 the statesman and the philosopher Edmund Burke died, after having contracted stomach cancer. He was buried in Beaconsfield Church near his Buckinghamshire home. Burke had been a distinguished Member of Parliament but never attained high office. His political career must be judged a failure.
However, Edmund Burke's true legacy was contained in his extensive writings. In letters, pamphlets and books he expounded a coherent system of ideas about human nature;the organic state; the benefits of prejudice;the dangers of government by secret consensus and the role of political parties.
Two hundred years on, most scholars would agree that Burke had a gift for deep analysis conveyed in stylish English prose.Yet the content of his work though remains controversial. Supporters included the poet William Wordsworth, who called Burke: " the most sagacious politician of his age" . Karl Marx, on the other hand, complained in Das Kapital that Burke was a bourgeois stooge of the English ruling class. Marxists took particular offence at Burke's critique of egalitarianism, perhaps realising the radical threat which this presented to their own vision of a future society.

Burke was the son of a Dublin attorney. In 1750, he entered the Middle Temple, London, but Burke soon abandoned law for literary work. In 1756 he published, anonymously, A Vindication of Natural Society . In 1765 he became the private secretary to Marquis of Rockingham, who at that time, but only for a year thereafter, was premier. Burke soon entered parliament, as a Whig, through a pocket borough, Wendover. During most all of his years as a parliamentarian, Burke was to sit in the opposition benches as a critic to the ruling Tories. These were times of great historical importance, marked by the unsuccessful coercion of the American colonies. The event, which was to unfold over a number of years, was, accompanied by corruption, extravagance, and reaction. Against this, Burke and his Whig friends could only raise a strong protest. "The best of Burke's writings and speeches belong to this period, and may be described as a defence of sound constitutional statesmanship against prevailing abuse and misgovernment." After the British colonies were lost, still yet in opposition, Burke turned his great talents in the support of the Irish cause

A biography of Edmund Burke (1729-1797)
Quote British statesman, parliamentary orator and political thinker, played a prominent part in all major political issues for about 30 years after 1765, and remained an important figure in the history of political theory. Burke was Irish, born in Dublin in 1729. His father, a solicitor, was protestant, his mother Roman Catholic. He entered Trinity college, Dublin, in 1744, and came to London in 1750. Burke's A Vindication of Natural Society was published in 1756 and in 1757 A Philosophical Inquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful appeared. Also in 1757, Burke married Jane Nugent, the daughter of an Irish Catholic doctor. His political career started in 1765 when he became the private secretary of one of the Whig leaders in Parliament, the marquess of Rockingham. Burke soon proved to be one of the main characters in the constitutional controversy in Britain under George III, who at the time was trying to establish more actual power for the crown. Although the crown had lost some influence under the first two Georges, one of the major political problems in 18th century Britain was the fact that both the king and Parliament had considerable control over the executive. Burke responded to these affairs in his pamphlet Thoughts on the Cause of the Present Discontents (1770), in which he argued that although George's actions were legal in the sense that they were not against the letter of the constitution, they were all the more against it in spirit. In the pamphlet Burke elaborates on his famous and new justification of a party, defined as :... a body of men united on public principle, which could act as a constitutional link between king and parliament, providing consistency and strenght in administration, or principled criticism in opposition" (...431-32).

Edmund Burke, was born in Dublin, January 12, educated at a Quaker boarding school and at Trinity College, Dublin. In 1750 he entered the Middle Temple, London, but soon abandoned law for literary work. His Vindication of Natural Society , was published in 1756, as was also his Philosophical Inquiry into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful . From 1761 to 1783 he was back in Dublin as private secretary to the Marquis of Rockingham, at that time premier, and entered Parliament for the pocket borough of Wendover. His eloquence once gained him a high position in the Whig party. Rockingham's administration lasted only one year. Although Burke held no public office until the downfall of the North ministry in 1782, Burke's public activity never ceased. Lord North's long administration (1770-1782) was marked by the unsuccessful coercion of the American colonies, by corruption, extravagance, and reaction. Against this policy Burke and his Whig friends could only raise a strong protest. The best of Burke's writings and speeches belong to this period, and may be described as a defense of sound constitutional statesmanship against prevailing abuse and misgovernment.
