Philosopher, theologian, Zionist thinker and leader, born in Vienna. As a child, Buber lived with his grandfather, a noted midrash scholar. Buber was an active Zionist who emphasized education, dialogue, and the establishment of a joint Arab-Israeli state. His earliest works retold Hasidic tales (e.g., Tales of Rabbi Nachman and The Legend of the Baal Shem , 1906, 1908, in German). His I and Thou (first German edition, 1923) set forth his philosophical position and won lasting acclaim. In this work he distinguishes "I-it," or instrumental relations, from "I-Thou" relations, which he describes in humanistic terms. The I-Thou relationship leads to his notion of God as the Eternal Thou. Buber was the first head of the Department of Social Relations at Hebrew University (Jerusalem), joining it as Professor of Social Philosophy in 1938 after the Gestapo forbade his lectures in Germany. He taught there until his retirement in 1951. M. Herbert Danzger

Martin Buber’s I and Thou Martin Buber’s I and Thou Ich und Du , 1923) presents a philosophy of personal dialogue, in that it describes how personal dialogue can define the nature of reality. Buber’s major theme is that human existence may be defined by the way in which we engage in dialogue with each other, with the world, and with God. According to Buber, human beings may adopt two attitudes toward the world: I-Thou or I-It I-Thou is a relation of subject-to-subject, while I-It is a relation of subject-to-object. In the I-Thou relationship, human beings are aware of each oher as having a unity of being. In the I-Thou relationship, human beings do not perceive each other as consisting of specific, isolated qualities, but engage in a dialogue involving each other's whole being. In the I-It relationship, on the other hand, human beings perceive each other as consisting of specific, isolated qualities, and view themselves as part of a world which consists of things. I-Thou is a relationship of mutuality and reciprocity, while

1. Biographical Background
2. Zionism
Recruited by his older compatriot, the Budapest-born and Vienna-based journalist Theodor Herzl, Buber briefly edited the main paper of the Zionist party, Die Welt realpolitik and a distinctively Jewish theological-political tradition. Very much in keeping with the nineteenth-century Protestant yearning for a Christian foundation of the nation-state, Buber sought a healing source in the integrating powers of the religious experience. After a hiatus of more than ten years during which Buber spoke to Jewish youth groups (most famously the Prague Bar Kokhba) but refrained from any practical involvement in Zionist politics, he reentered Zionist debates in 1916 when he began publishing the journal

As such, written in Germany in the second quarter of this century, it is perforce a running commentary on Kierkegaard, Husserl, Heidegger, Scheler. But this does not make Buber an Existentialist any more than Aquinas is a Nominalist or an Averroist. Again, the American lectures gathered as

The Political Side of Martin Buber
It is generally known today that the teachings of Martin Buber (1878 - 1965) on the I-Thou relationship have been the single most important influence on Gestalt therapy. There is one side to Martin Buber, however, which has been much neglected his political side. What I have set out to show in this paper is not only that Buber did indeed understand his philosophy as having a political dimension, but also that he wished to be politically effective, and how he sought to be so. I also mean to continue the discussion on politics and therapy which has always been central to my work as a Gestalt therapist, director of an institute, teacher and editor. The discussion has changed since its inception in the Eighties, and it should not cease today.
