The School of Franz Brentano Nijhoff International Philosophy Series , Vol 52) by Liliana Albertazzi (Editor), Massimo Libardi (Editor), Roberto Poli (Editor) The School of Franz Brentano provides a fascinating picture of both the life and thought of Franz Brentano and his main pupils. The volume is divided into three sections, presenting: 1. a detailed reconstruction of Brentano's life and contributions to philosophy; 2. separate studies of Brentano's most important students (von Ehrenfels, Husserl, Marty, Meinong, Stumpf, and Twardowski); 3. separate studies of the main philosophical problems or areas of Brentano's writings. The book is the first wide reconstruction of Brentano's intellectual legacy, with topics such as philosophy of mind, ontology, philosophy of language, logic and theory of values. 1. Life and Work
On the Several Senses of Being in Aristotle Habilitationsschrift on The Psychology of Aristotle After his Habilitation Brentano had started to work on a large scale work on the foundations of psychology which he entitled Psychology from an Empirical Standpoint. The first volume was published in 1874, a second volume ( The Classification of Mental Phenomena ) followed in 1911, and fragments of the third volume ( Sensory and Noetic Consciousness ) were published posthumously by Oskar Kraus in 1928. Shortly after the publication of the first volume Brentano took a job as a full professor at the University of Vienna, where he continued a successful teaching career. During his tenure in Vienna Brentano, who was very critical towards his own writing, no longer wrote books but turned instead to publish various lectures. The topics range from The Genius and a series of papers on historiography to The Origin of the Knowledge of Right and Wrong

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Franz Brentano January 16 March 17 ) was an influential figure in both philosophy and psychology . His influence was felt by other figures such as Edmund Husserl and Alexius Meinong who followed and adapted Brentano's views. The philosopher and psychologist Franz Brentano is best known because he reintroduced the concept of intentionality , originally a concept from scholastic philosophy , in contemporary philosophy in lectures and in his work Psychologie vom Empirischen Standpunkte . While often simplistically summarised as "aboutness" or the relationship between mental acts and the external world, Brentano defined it as the main characteristic of psychical phenomena , by which they could be distinguished from physical phenomena . Every mental phenomenon, every psychological act has a content, is directed at an object (the intentional object ). Every belief, desire etc. has an object that they are about: the believed, the wanted. Brentano used the expression "intentional inexistence" to indicate the status of the objects of thought in the mind. The property of being intentional, of having an intentional object, was the key feature to distinguish psychical phenomena and physical phenomena, because physical phenomena lack intentionality altogether.

He is best known for his views on intentionality , a concept from scholastic philosophy which he gave a new lease of life (though in fact he never used the word). Intentionality is 'aboutness', the relationship between, for example, a sentence and the real world. Brentano wrote of the "intentional inexistence" of the objects of thought in the mind, which he maintained could not be accounted for by anything physical; a proof, it seemed, of dualism - the existence of a separate spiritual world.

    INTRODUCTION
"Brentano was a philosopher and psychologist who taught at the Universities of Würzburg and Vienna. He made significant contributions to almost every branch of philosophy, notably psychology and philosophy of mind, ontology, ethics and the philosophy of language. He also published several books on the history of philosophy, especially Aristotle, and contented that philosophy proceeds in cycles of advance and decline. He is best known for reintroducing the scholastic concept of intentionality into philosophy and proclaiming it as the characteristic mark of the mental. His teachings, especially those on what he called descriptive psychology, influenced the phenomenological movement in the twentieth century, but because of his concern for precise statement and his sensitivity to the dangers of the undisciplined use of philosophical language, his work also bears affinities to analytic philosophy." Brentano's Theory of Judgement
One of Brentano's foremost aims in philosophy was to provide a new foundation for epistemology and logic as two closely related disciplines. He tried to achieve this by a systematic analysis of the mental phenomena involved in attaining knowledge and in drawing inferences. For Brentano knowledge is reached by judgements that are directly or indirectly evident, and logical inferences can contribute to our knowledge because they can make a judgement indirectly evident for us. Hence both epistemology and logic rely on a conception of judgements, how they differ from other mental phenomena, and how they are related to each other. existential (non-predicative), idiogenetic (non-reductionist), and reistic (non-propositional). Today Brentano's theory does not have many adherents. The now dominant view is that propositions or sentences are the objects of belief, and that judgements occur when beliefs are acquired, manifested, or changed. Logical inferences are then defined as relations between propositions or sentences, abstracting from the mental attitudes that go along with them. Although this anti-psychological approach is widely accepted today, there is still an open question concerning the order of explanation here: Are beliefs and judgements true because they are directed at true propositions, or should we say that propositions (and sentences) are true because they express true beliefs and judgements? Once this question is raised, Brentano's theory of judgement remains an interesting alternative to the current mainstream in logic and epistemology.
