Back to Home Page or Contents Page or People or Index Bosanquet, Bernard B ernard Bosanquet was an English philosopher, mystic, and memorable teacher and influential guide to many thinkers, notably William James. This leading British thinker's desire to lead an ethical and moral life led him to resign his distinguished posts at Oxford in order to present his gifts to a larger audience; as a consequence he became an active member of the London Ethical Society and the Charity Organization Society. Both were positive demonstrations of Bosanquet's philosophy because he believed man should abandon himself to something larger than himself if he is to achieved a catharsis and self realization, the cosmic drama directed by the Absolute, which is the only means to experiencing a cosmic, mystical oneness. Bosanquet was one of the leaders of the so-called neo-Hegelian philosophical movement in Great Britain. He derived his ideas from the ancient Greek philosopher Plato and the German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Fredrich Hegel. Bosanquet wrote on logic, metaphysics, aesthetics, politics, and ethics. Among his best-known works were the Gifford lectures, The Principle of Individuality and Virtue and The Value and Destiny of the Individual published 1912 and 1913 respectively.

Bernard Bosanquet (1848 - 1923)
The type has been reset throughout, with remarkably few misprints. Peter Nicholson, History of Political Thought , Volume XXI, Issue 4 (2000) Bernard Bosanquet was one of the leading figures of the idealist movement that flourished in the late 19th and early 20th century. He made major contributions to philosophy and had a significant role in British social policy. His work shows the greatest breadth of any of the idealists, and was discussed by the leading figures of his day, such as the philosophers Bertrand Russell, Samuel Alexander and F. H. Bradley, and social reformers such as Sidney and Beatrice Webb and William Booth. A prolific author, Bosanquet made major contributions to aesthetics, religion, metaphysics, politics, social philosophy and (idealist) logic. He wrote or edited some 20 books and was the author of over 150 articles. In his obituary in

Bernard Bosanquet’s The Value and Destiny of the Individual Bernard Bosanquet’s The Value and Destiny of the Individual is based on the Gifford Lectures which he delivered at the University of Edinburgh in 1912. The lectures examine the nature of individuality and selfhood, continuing an investigation which was begun in his Gifford Lectures of 1911, published under the title, The Principle of Individuality and Value . Together, the two series of lectures are also entitled Individuality and Destiny . The first series of lectures presents the thesis that the reality of all things depends upon their individuality. The second series examines how the transcendence of finite selfhood defines the value and destiny of the individual. According to Bosanquet, finite being is an element of infinite being. All finite beings are included within Absolute Being. Insofar as finite being is a constituent of infinite being, finite being reveals the principle of infinity. Bosanquet argues that the value of the finite being is defined by how it is related to Absolute Being. The value of the individual or finite self is the same as its destiny, in that the value of the self or individual is revealed by the contribution that the individual makes to Absolute Being.
