GREAT THEOSOPHISTS
J ACOB B OEHME
JACOB BOEHME was born in the little village of Alt Seidenburg, near Goerlitz, in 1575. Although his Theosophical co-workers, Giordano Bruno and Robert Fludd, incarnated in families of wealth and distinction, Boehme was the son of poor German peasants. It would be useless to speculate about the complications of Karma which led him into a life filled with such apparent obstacles. The point to be observed is that he turned his difficulties into opportunities for growth, and, as Mr. Judge says, "There can be no manner of doubt about his succeeding incarnation. As Krishna says in the Bhagavad-Gita, he has been or will shortly be 'born into a family of wise devotees,' and thence 'he will attain the highest walk.'" It is quite evident that Jacob Boehme grasped the fundamental truths of the ancient Wisdom-Religion without being able to express them in a clear and lucid form. His Theosophical knowledge, however, did not come to him through books, for, although he learned to read and write, his education stopped at that point. This, however, did not keep the knowledge he had acquired in past lives from welling into his mind. Nor did it prevent the living Guardians of eternal Truth from aiding him and using him as their agent. H.P.B. calls him the "nursling of the Nirmanakayas This attitude, firmly and consistently maintained, brought about his first "illumination," and for seven days he was in a state of "ecstasy." During those days much of the knowledge he had gained in former lives returned to him. He realized that duty, well-performed, is the highest form of Yoga, and began to apply his knowledge in the humble tasks of his every day life, becoming, as a result, an excellent shoemaker. At the age of nineteen his apprenticeship ended, and he became a journeyman shoemaker. When he was twenty-one he married a simple peasant girl, and from their union four sons were born, each of whom followed his father's profession.

Jacob Boehme Imagine an untrained thinker who nevertheless had a major influence on a host of notable philosophers and religious leaders. Jacob Boehme was such a man. A shoemaker without college or university credentials, he wrote twenty-nine books and tracts which set a lot of minds turning over. Among them were thinkers, Pietists and mystics not only of his own age, but down to our own day. Henri Bergson's metaphysics, George Fox's Quakerism, Hegel's dialectical theory, and Heidegger's existentialism each owe something to Boehme. Even mad Nietzsche and gloomy Schopenhauer borrowed ideas from him. So did the liberal theologian Paul Tillich.

Boehme
Glenn Everett , Associate Professor of English, University of Tennessee at Martin
acob Boehme (1575-1624) was a German peasant shoemaker who became a mystic. He believed that God and Nature exist in opposition, and that the conditions of human existence are a consequence of various conflicts between opposing principles light and darkness, good and evil, love and hate, and so forth and that, seen from this perspective, the universe is the revelation of God. Boehme's doctrines were translated into English in a number of editions between 1645 and 1662, and strongly influenced the thought not only of men like William Law (the English theologian and mystic whose "Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life" sowed, according to John Wesley, the seeds of Methodism , and was the first work, Dr. Johnson said, which drew his attention to religion). Boehme also had major influence upon William Blake.

An Introduction to Jacob Boehme Jacob Boehme, "chosen servant of God," was born in Alt Seidenburg, Germany, in 1575.
John Wesley, in his day, required all of his preachers to study the writings of Jacob Boehme; and the learned theologian, Willam Law, said of him: "Jacob Boehme was not a messenger of anything new in religion, but the mystery of all that was old and true in religion and nature, was opened up to him," - "the depth of the riches, both of the wisdom and knowledge of God." Born of poor, but pious, Lutheran parents, from childhood, Jacob Boehme was concerned about "the salvation of his soul." Although daily occupied, first as a shepherd, and afteward as a shoemaker, he was always an earnest student of the Holy Scriptures; but he could not understand "the ways of God," and he became "perplexed, even to melancholy, - pressed out of measure." He said: "I knew the Bible from beginning to end, but could find no consolation in Holy Writ; and my spirit, as if moving in a great storm, arose in God, carrying with it my whole heart, mind and will and wrestled with the love and mercy of God, that his blessing might descend upon me, that my mind might be illumined with his Holy Spirit, that I might understand his will and get rid of my sorrow . . . "I had always thought much of how I might inherit the kingdom of heaven; but finding in myself a powerful opposition, in the desires that belong to the flesh and blood, I began a battle against my corrupted nature; and with the aid of God, I made up my mind to overcome the inherited evil will, . . . break it, and enter wholly into the love of God in Christ Jesus . . . I sought the heart of Jesus Christ, the center of all truth; and I resolved to regard myself as dead in my inherited form, until the Spirit of God would take form in me, so that in and through him, I might conduct my life.

Behmenists Summary Behmenism was a Continental religious sect based on the teaching and writings of , a German Lutheran religious philosopher and Pietist mystic. He has been called the "Teutonic Theosopher". Boehme wrote his first treatise Die Morgenroete in Aufgang oder Aurora In 1618 he started writing devotional treatises. The majority of his works were written from 1619-1624. His second major work was Weg zu Christo
English Behmenists
English Behmenists developed independently of their Continental brethren. Some of the English Behmenists eventually merged with the early Quakers, who incorporated Boehme's teachings into their own doctrines. Boehme through his writings would lead men to a fuller religious experience and awakening to God. English translations of Boehmes' writings were very popular in England. Manuscripts seem to have been available in the late 1640's. A biography of Boehme was produced about 1645 by Richard Whittaker . Boehme's works were being translated after 1645 into English by the following translators: John Sparrow Humphrey Blunden ; and
