Bishop George Berkeley, 1685-1753.
Famous Irishman and bishop of the Church of England, after whom a town on the San Francisco bay was named after. George Berkeley was a prominent empiricist philosopher who laid out his famous idealist epistemology in his youthful Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge (1710). He conflated Locke 's primary and secondary qualities into mere "ideas" thus reduced all human knowledge into mental interpretations. It was by radicalizing Berkeley's philosophy that David Hume made his stunning debut into intellectual history. It is to Berkeley whom we owe that tiresome question of the existence of the tree falling unobserved in the forest (or the Oxford ditty of the "tree in the Quad"). In political economy, Berkeley was a thorough pessimist - perhaps explained by the miserable economic state of the Ireland around him. He turned his pen to argue for government (and Church) intervention in creating the "social climate" for economic development in Ireland (a true empiricist always confuses cause and effect!). He made Law's doctrine that "easy money is the engine of trade" central to his policy conclusions, basing this on his argument that money was effectively only a "ticket" for a credit transaction (presaging the ideas of

    The Nature of the Universe
    I. General Notions
John Locke had constructed a theory of knowledge in which the subject was closed up within himself. The object of such knowledge was consequently ideas (subjective impressions) and not things. If ideas are the immediate object of our knowledge, is it ever possible to admit an external reality corresponding to such ideas? George Berkeley ( picture ) denied this theory and reduced the reality of the external world to the existence of finite spirits and the infinite spirit (God). There is no material world. For Berkeley, even Locke's concept of substance was merely a name devoid of reality. There exists only the world of spirits, dominated by God, the Supreme Spirit.

He was a bishop. I do not here mean to imply that a religious bent precludes insanity. It is rather that this particular lunacy was ascribed to Berkeley over and above that freely attributed to him as a man of the cloth. Moreover, this predication of psychosis was in spite of Berkeley's evident wit, wisdom and wile whilst writing on topics diverse as the calculus, natural law, optics, politics, poverty and, somewhat incongruously, tar-water. Why then was Berkeley seen as having taken leave of his senses? Ironically, it was because he beseeched us to pay strict attention to the evidence of their testimony. Berkeley made a quite remarkable claim: there is no such thing as matter. Put so bluntly, this sounds ridiculous. No trousers or Meccano? No chifferobes or lariats? This must be manifest derangement. Not quite. Berkeley was an undergraduate of Trinity College Dublin. A few years prior to his matriculation, William Molyneaux, another Dubliner, entered into an exchange of letters with John Locke. Molyneaux was impressed with his correspondent's lately published work, the

    HIS LIFE AND WORKS
His Early Life and Education in Ireland
George Berkeley was born on March 12, 1685, at Dysert Castle near Thomastown, Ireland, into an Anglo-Irish family. In 1700, at age 15, he entered Trinity College, Dublin. During those undergraduate days he was introduced to the thinking of John Locke, in particular Locke's Essay concerning Human Understanding. As a consequence, Berkeley began to keep a journal of his thoughts on Locke's ideas and started to fashion a response to Locke's work. Berkeley received his BA degree from Trinity College in 1704and in 1707, at age 22, he became a fellow of the College. In that same year (1707) Berkeley became ordained as an Anglican priest.
His Early Works on Perception and Reality
In 1709 Berkeley was ready to publish his reflections on the popular Lockean philosophy with his own Essay toward a New Theory of Vision.
