Nacionalidad: Gran Bretaña
Dysert 1685 - Oxford 1753

[Back To A List Of Philosophers]
George Berkeley
Berkeley, born in Ireland, was educated at Trinity college, Dublin. He eventually became an Anglican bishop. As a young man he published a number of philosophical works. In 1713, Berkeley came to London and from there, at the expense of a rich family who required a chaplain and a tutor, travelled to France and Italy; he spent the best part of seven years on the continent (shades of John Locke .) By 1721, Berkeley had returned back to Ireland, and, in 1728, he sailed for America for the purpose "of founding a college at the Bermudas for the Christian civilization of America." He did not achieve his purpose. After having spent three years at Rhode Island he returned back to England. Locke made a distinction between "primary" and "secondary" qualities of things that exist. Berkeley picked up on Locke's belief that all that exists is capable of being sensed or experienced, that there is no existence of matter independent of perception. But Berkeley went beyond Locke in holding that it is only because of "the observing mind of God makes possible the continued apparent existence of material objects." His views lead to some difficulty. "Berkeley's philosophy ends with the existence of spiritual substance as a substitute for material substance ..." [Henry Alphern, An Outline History of Philosophy (Forum House, 1969) p. 109.]

The interactive Web pages are available in a number of languages Jump into the kit. Help and additional information available include a tutorial , an overview of how the system works, a paper that was presented at WWW '94, and a paper that was published in COMPCON '95. Please note, however, that we are computer scientists, not biologists. We will not be able to help you with your homework (see biology-related information for help). Also, we don't know of any animals other than the frog that have a computer-graphics based virtual dissection page. We get frequent requests for this information. If someone has done such a page for a fetal pig, cat, etc., we'd be interested in hearing about it.

Berkeley, George E Pronunciation Key Berkeley, George , Anglo-Irish philosopher and clergyman, b. Co. Kilkenny, Ireland. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin, he became a scholar and later a fellow there. Most of Berkeley's important work in philosophy was done in his younger years. His Essay Towards a New Theory of Vision A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge (1710), and the famous Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philonous (1713) are among his more important works. At considerable personal sacrifice he organized a movement to establish a college in the Bermudas to convert the indigenous peoples, going to Rhode Island in 1728 to wait for promised support. This support never came, and after three years he returned to England. He was made bishop of Cloyne in 1734. Berkeley in his subjective idealism went beyond Locke , who had argued that such qualities as color and taste arise in the mind while primary qualities of matter such as extension and weight have existence independent of the mind. Berkeley held that both types of qualities are known only in the mind and that therefore there is no existence of matter independent of perception (

Bebel had trained as a cabinet maker, and in 1863, at the time of the founding of Lassalle's German Workers' Association, he found "socialism and communism" "totally unfamiliar concepts, double-duth words". Bebel was a member of the Reichstag from 1867. Sentenced with Liebknecht to two years imprisonment for "treason" (opposition to Franco-German War) in 1872. After the GSD merged with the Lassalleans in Gotha From My Life and Women and Socialism. See the August Bebel Archive Becker, Hermann Heinrich (1820-1885) Cologne writer and communist. In thePrinciples he argues for the striking claim that there is no external, material world; that houses, trees and the like are simply collections of ‘ideas’; and that it is God who produces ‘ideas’ or ‘sensations’ in our minds. The New Theory of Vision had gone some way towards preparing the ground for this claim (although that work has interest and value in its own right), and the Dialogues represent Berkeley’s second attempt to defend it. Other works were to follow, including De Motu (1721), Alciphron (1732) and Siris (1744), but the three early works established Berkeley as one of the major figures in the history of modern philosophy.
1 Life
From this time onwards, Berkeley’s life was active and interesting. He made two continental tours, the first (1713-14) as chaplain to Lord Peterborough, during which he apparently met Malebranche, and the second (1716-20) as tutor to George Ashe, son of the Bishop of Clogher. Towards the end of the second tour he wrote the Latin tract De Motu for submission to the Royal Academy of Sciences at Paris, which had offered a prize for an essay on the cause of motion. He published this in 1721, returned to Ireland in the same year, and was appointed Dean of Derry in 1724. Already, however, he had conceived a remarkable project that was to dominate his life for ten years. During the spring of 1722 he resolved to found a college on the island of Bermuda, and before long he set about soliciting support for and gaining a charter for St Paul’s College, which would, had it come into existence, have educated a number of young Native Americans, as well as the sons of English planters.

Berkeley, George 1685-1753
The pre-history of cognitive science The Pre-History of Cognitive Science web site summarises the theories of human cognition developed between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. The site consists of separate pages devoted to each major thinker that discussed the relationship between the material world, our physical bodies, and abstract thought. As of June 2002, the represented writers were Robert Burton, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and George Berkeley. For each author, the page begins with a brief overview of their major texts and general intentions; next, their model of human cognition is described in some detail; finally, the significance of the model to the history of human cognition is discussed, and the strengths and weaknesses of their theories are examined. Important concepts are hyperlinked to a subject index, thus allowing the user to cross-reference particular topics in each of the featured writers. Bibliographic information and a chronology are also included.
