Walter Benjamin, Surrealism and Photography Rajeev S. Patke National University of Singapore Paper presented at Workshop on ‘Literature as Revolt in Twentieth Century Europe’, 17 August 1998, The University of Haifa, Israel (6 th ISSEI Conference) Benjamin wrote his essay on Surrealism during 1928, when the Surrealist movement was still in what André Breton called its transition from an "intuitive" to a "reasoning" phase. Benjamin's recent work, the city- montage of One-Way Street (1928), had taken on the challenges presented to the writer by the natural history of the modern, post-Baudelairean, urban landscape of Europe. It had given him a presentiment of what was to become the Arcades project, the main preoccupation of his last decade. These developments were accompanied by the onset of a highly personal commitment to Marxism. In this context, his relation to the Surrealists was adventitious and fortuitous. He was neither part of the movement, nor close to its members, though he looked on, first with a keen—and then with a disappointed—eye on their activities in Paris. In 1926, he had found Louis Aragon's

Biography
Walter Benjamin Benjamin was born in Berlin on July 15, 1892. He was an unusual figure in 20th century thought, considering himself a "Man of Letters" and a literary critic rather than taking the more illustrious title of philosopher. His short career carried him through the ten years leading up to WWII, publishing an essay on Goethe's Elective Affinities in 1924 that earned him swift recognition. He had received his doctorate in Switzerland in 1919, but failed to acquire his Habilitation , making it difficult for him to find work well suited to his abilities. The work he had submitted in 1928 was the only full-length study that he published, The Origins of German Tragic Drama , and it was likely misunderstood by its jurors, for it prominently contained a complex network of appropriated quotations. In the period between 1925 and 1933 Benjamin eked out a living as a literary critic and translator, as a freelance writer for journals and magazines, meeting a number of left-wing intellectuals. He befriended Bertolt Brecht, an ally who shared with Benjamin both an affinity with the Left, and a suspicion of dialectics (the dominant concept in use at the time). When the Nazi's took office in 1933, Benjamin fled to Paris, maintaining work as a writer for the Institute for Social Research based in Frankfurt. Paris was an inspiration for Benjamin, and it was during this period that he wrote some of his most influential essays and articles for literary journals, including an ambitious (and hence, unfinished) reading of Baudelaire's

Benjamin, Walter The Correspondence of Walter Benjamin, 1910-1940 . Edited and annotated by Gershom Scholem and Theodor W. Adorno. Translated, edited, and annotated by Manfred R. Jacobson and Evelyn M. Jacobson. xxii, 652 p., 2 halftones. 1994 LC: 93041005 Class: PT2603.E455 Cloth $45.00 0-226-04237-5 Spring 1994 Called "the most important critic of his time" by Hannah Arendt, Walter Benjamin has emerged as one of the most compelling thinkers of our time as well, his work assuming a crucial place in current debates over the interactions of art, culture, and meaning. A "natural and extraordinary talent for letter writing was one of the most captivating facets of his nature," writes Gershom Scholem in his Foreword; and indeed, Benjamin's correspondence reveals the evolution of some of his most powerful ideas. Published here in English for the first time, these letters offer an intimate picture of Benjamin himself and the times in which he lived. Written in a day when letters were an important vehicle for the presentation and development of intellectual matters, Benjamin's correspondence is rich in insight into the circumstances behind his often difficult work. Writing at length to Scholem and Theodor Adorno, and exchanging letters with Rainer Maria Rilke, Hannah Arendt, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Max Horkheimer, Max Brod, Bertolt Brecht, and Kafka's friend Felix Weltsch, Benjamin elaborates his ideas about metaphor and language. He reflects on literary figures from Kafka to Karl Kraus, the "Jewish Question" and anti-Semitism, Marxism and Zionism. And he expounds his personal attitudes toward such subjects as the role of quotations in criticism, history, and tradition; the meaning of being a "collector"; and French culture and the national character.

Benjamin, the televisual and the "fascistic subject". Allen Meek Abstract The 1936 Berlin Olympics, as well as providing the sets for Leni Riefenstahl's masterpiece of Nazi propaganda Olympia , served as the site of the first "live" television broadcast. Among the crowds attending this global sports event, that simultaneously appeared on screens in several reception halls in Berlin, was the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, who had only the day before delivered an early version of his paper "The mirror stage" at Marienbad. In the 1949 version of that now famous essay Lacan would write that "the formation of the I is symbolised in dreams by a fortress, or a stadium." 1) Jacques Lacan, Ecrits: a selection , trans. After its translation into English in the late 1960s, Lacan's paper on the mirror stage played a substantial part in the formulation of what has since become known in media studies as Screen theory. The positioning of the subject in the cinematic text has been analysed with reference to Lacan's account of the narcissistic misrecognition of the self as a unified entity or

Benjamin can lay claim to being the most significant cultural theorist of the twentieth century and as a consequence a great deal of material (from the lightweight and superficial to the heavyweight and recondite) has been published about him. As such the book under review is especially useful - it gives a clear account of his work without feeling the need to be pedantically obscure, very long or distressingly chatty. One suspects that Benjamin would have appreciated (despairingly) the widespread ignorance of his work over many years being transformed into no less than an academic industry. We are told in this book that the secondary literature on Benjamin for the years 1984 to 1993 runs to over two thousand items. Bolz and Reijen cover Benjamin's principal ideas, from his early works to his famously unfinished Arcades Project, in an accessible and reasonably comprehensive way. No one understood (or even noticed) quite like Benjamin that the objects and persons of everyday life, while representing the gross hold of a powerful mode of production, also exhibit (for all their firmness and ideological supplication) a fragile contingency and represent, too, a world full of transience and strange beliefs. Under the sway of capitalism and a sophisticated technology nationalism and mysticism could form an appallingly poisonous cocktail. The system of cultural criticism Benjamin developed has, at its height, four permanent features: i) the excitement of modernity, ii) the enchantment of the old, iii) a notion of salvation through the realization of futility, and, iv) the observation of universal themes in ordinary events.

Hansel and Gretel are alive and well And they're living in Berlin She is a cocktail waitress He had a part in a Fassbinder film And they sit around at night now drinking schnapps and gin And she says: Hansel, you're really bringing me down And he says: Gretel, you can really be a bitch He says: I've wasted my life on our stupid legend When my one and only love was the wicked witch. She said: What is history? And he said: History is an angel being blown backwards into the future He said: History is a pile of debris And the angel wants to go back and fix things To repair the things that have been broken But there is a storm blowing from Paradise And the storm keeps blowing the angel backwards into the future And this storm, this storm is called Progress
