page: Simone de Beauvoir is best known for her revolutionary study of women's condition, The Second Sex (1949), a work that changed women's lives worldwide. In 1999, an international colloquium was held in Paris to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of The Second Sex . The conference included a number of papers on Beauvoir and lesbianism, a topic that, a decade earlier, would have been virtually unthinkable. In 1990, however, when Beauvoir's journals and two volumes of her letters to Jean-Paul Sartre were made available, it became clear that Beauvoir had had a number of same-sex relationships throughout her life. These revelations, along with others, completely shattered the heretofore unassailable myth of Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre as the twentieth century's most perfect couple. Today, Beauvoir's same-sex relationships are widely acknowledged, although attempts to excuse them (as "bohemian existentialist experimentation," to give but one example), in the interest of preserving Beauvoir's heterosexual image, persist.

http://www.consapevolezza.it/mandala/frame/De-Beauvoir.asp
SIMONE DE BEAUVOIR (1908-1986) Scrittrice francese.

Home Articles Games Portals ... Contact Us Philosopher of the Month October 2001 - Simone de Beauvoir Ion Georgiou Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre studied at the Sorbonne for their postgraduate agrégation in philosophy in 1928-29 (fellow students included Claude Lévi-Strauss and Maurice Merleau-Ponty). Both distinguished themselves, of that there is no doubt. During the examination, Sartre presented his case with typical confidence and self-possession. "The entire jury, particularly the president, Lalande, were captivated," said Maurice de Gandillac – future eminent professor of philosophy. Of de Beauvoir, he said she was: "rigorous, demanding, precise, very technical… she was the youngest in the promotion normalien (student at an École Normal supérieure) and, besides, he was taking it for the second time." In the complex marking system, Simone de Beauvoir missed first place by a mere one fiftieth of a point.

The existentialist Simone de Beauvoir
A contrived ethics for us all
In Ethics of Ambiguity (1947) Simone de Beauvoir offers a lucid and accessible ethics based on existentialism.  At the center of this ethics are assumptions about a good will, the social character of people and love and the claim that nothing is good or bad, useful or useless per se; there are no external justifications for whatever ethics people have.  Beauvoir argues that only the individual can lay the basis for her existence, and illustrates this crucial premise with a quote from the French essayist Michel Montaigne (1533-92) in the very beginning of her essay:  “Life it self is neither good nor evil.  It is the place of good and evil, according to what you make it.”   Like other existentialists, Beauvoir argues that humans are thrown into a world where there are no absolutes.  As Jean Paul Sartre (1905-1980) wrote in Existentialism and Humanism “existence precedes essence:” There is no predetermined human nature; whatever people do and whoever they are, is a result of their making.  There is no external justification for it whatever passions people acquire.
