ROGER BACON
BACON, ROGER (c. I2i4-c. 1294), English philosopher and man of science, was born near Ilchester in Somerset. His family appears to have been in good circumstances, but in the stormy reign of Henry III. their property was despoiled and several members of the family were driven into exile. Roger completed his studies at Oxford, though not, as current traditions assert, at Merton or at Brasenose, neither of which had then been founded. His abilities were speedily recognized by his contemporaries, and he enjoyed the friendship of such eminent men as Adam de Marisco and Robert Grosseteste, bishop of Lincoln. Very little is known of Bacon's life at Oxford; it is said he took orders in 1233, and this is not improbable. In the following year, or perhaps later, he crossed over to France and studied at the university of Paris, then the centre of intellectual life in Europe. The two great orders, Franciscans and Dominicans, were in the vigour of youth, and had already begun to take the lead in theological discussion. Alexander of Hales was the oracle of the Franciscans, while the rival order rejoiced in Albertus Magnus and Thomas Aquinas. not all haveyet been discovered. Many are transcripts of works or portions of works already published and, therefore, require no notice.

Roger Bacon - Tract on the Tincture and Oil of Antimony
On the true and right Preparation of Stibium / to heal human weaknesses and illnesses therewith, and to improve the imperfect metals.
Translated by Kjell Hellesoe 1985.
From Friedrich Roth-Scholtz, Deutsches theatrum chemicum , Nürnberg: Adam Jonathan Felsecker, 1731.
Preface Dear reader, at the end of his Tract on Vitriol, Roger Bacon mentions that because of the multiplication of the Tincture that is made from Vitriol, the lover of Art should acquaint himself with the Tract De Oleo Stibii. Therefore I considered that it would be good and useful that the Tract De Oleo Stibii follows next. And if one thoroughly ponders and compares these tinctures with one another, then I have no doubt that one will not finish without exceptional profit. Yet, every lover of Art, should mind always to keep one eye on Nature and the other on Art and manual labour. For, when these two do not stand together, then it is a lame work, as when someone thinks he can walk a long path on one leg only, which is easily seen to be impossible,
Vale.

Returning to Oxford, he taught there until when his superiors obliged him to discontinue. He had become a Franciscan, but just when is not known. Jerome de Ascoli, the General of the Franciscans, condemned the writings of Roger Bacon in , and ordered him confined in a monastery. How long he was detained is unknown, but he was free in when his Compendium of Theology appeared. His most noted works are the Opus Majus Opus Minus , and Opus Tertium , comprising recommendations for reform in ecclesiastical studies and in the system of education. In his writings he even mentions automobiles and flying machines.

Bacon, Roger (c.1214-c.1292)
English Franciscan and philosopher. Born in either Somerset or in Gloucestershire, he may have begun his studies in Oxford, but certainly spent some time in Paris. His published works include a series of questions on Aristotle metaphysical and physical treatises (c.1240-1246). He also invested heavily, whilst in his thirties, in the study of languages, mathematics and experimental science and was particularly influenced by Robert Grossteste. In 1257 he entered the Franciscan order in a bid to pursue his chosen studies further still. His place in the history of science and religion is hard to assess, as recent scholarship has shown that his work is not as original as once claimed. His knowledge of Arabic and Greek texts and their translation was vast, though it never progressed into any unified or systematic scheme of thought. The real achievement of the man has been lost beneath the veneer of a reputation for magical powers and mechanical invention. The twentieth century has seen attempts to represent as a martyr of science and freedom of thought, but these have been to no avail.
