Life of St. Augustine of Hippo
The great St. Augustine's life is unfolded to us in documents of unrivaled richness, and of no great character of ancient times have we information comparable to that contained in the "Confessions," which relate the touching story of his soul, the "Retractations," which give the history of his mind, and the "Life of Augustine," written by his friend Possidius, telling of the saint's apostolate. We will confine ourselves to sketching the three periods of this great life: (1) the young wanderer's gradual return to the Faith; (2) the doctrinal development of the Christian philosopher to the time of his episcopate; and (3) the full development of his activities upon the Episcopal throne of Hippo. I. FROM HIS BIRTH TO HIS CONVERSION (354-386) Augustine was born at Tagaste on 13 November, 354. Tagaste, now Souk-Ahras, about 60 miles from Bona (ancient Hippo-Regius), was at that time a small free city of proconsular Numidia which had recently been converted from Donatism. Although eminently respectable, his family was not rich, and his father, Patricius, one of the curiales Once won over to this sect, Augustine devoted himself to it with all the ardour of his character; he read all its books, adopted and defended all its opinions. His furious proselytism drew into error his friend Alypius and Romanianus, his Mæcenas of Tagaste, the friend of his father who was defraying the expenses of Augustine's studies. It was during this Manichæan period that Augustine's literary faculties reached their full development, and he was still a student at Carthage when he embraced error. His studies ended, he should in due course have entered the

Augustine of Hippo (354-430) envisioned a form of religious community life in which the members would "live in harmony, being united in mind and heart on the way God." He wrote a Rule outlining the basic principles of this sort of life. Today Augustinians and many other religious orders and congregations still use this Rule as their guide. A Bishop in Hippo (near modern-day Annaba, Algeria), Augustine was an influential leader in the African Church. As Christians were growing in their knowledge of God and Christ, Augustine helped to shape Christian theological teachings, particularly those about the role of Divine Grace and the nature of the Holy Trinity. In the process, he combatted many theological errors. The son of Monica, a holy Christian, and Patricius, a pagan, Augustine was born in 354 in Tagaste (now known as Souk Ahras, Algeria). He was educated in the best secular schools of his day. As a young man, he led a distinctly non-Christian and immoral life. He lived with a young woman without the benefit of marriage. Together they had a son, Adeodatus. The young Augustine was continually searching with a restless heart for meaning in life. Each time that he would be attracted to a particular philosophy or group, he would become disillusioned the more familiar he became with its thought.

saints and feast days
The term "saint" comes from the Latin "sanctus" which means "holy". To each saint is dedicated a feast day. Many of the saints are patrons of something. Feast days are usually the day of martyrdom. Cults have sprung up around many of the saints, and pilgrims may travel to the location of a saint's death or where miracles were supposed to have taken place. There are legends about many of the saints, often about miraculous ways in which they were unharmed by attempts at execution, and yet the executioners usually had their way in the end. In a leap year, any feast in February after the 24th is postponed by one day. Often observed locally by towns which are named after a saint, or which have a patron saint, or invoked for various reasons.

About the Author
Saint Augustine of Hippo was born November 13, 354, in Tagaste, Numidia, and died August 28, 430, in Hippo Regius. He was bishop of Hippo in Roman Africa from 396 to 430 and may have been the most important theologian of the early Christian church during the last days of the western Roman Empire. His best known works are the Confessions and the City of God He returned to Africa in 391 and was ordained a priest. Five years later he was made bishop of Hippo, and he served in various capacities as teacher, judge, and pastor. He wrote extensively, applying his critical pen against such heretical groups as the Manichaeans, the Donatists, and the Pelagians. In his master work, The City of God , Augustine took up the questions pursued by earlier scholars such as Origen. Unlike Origen, however, Augustine eschewed the temptation to ascribe much importance to human powers of free will. Instead, he favored a mystical view of the relationship between an omniscient God, for whom all things are known and without whom nothing is possible, and the salvation of the sinner, who bears full responsibility for his actions. This relationship could be encompassed only by an expression of divine grace. Augustine thus marked out a distinct position apart from the Pelagians (among whom Origen is sometimes classed as a sympathetic, intellectual forebear) and set in motion forces that would continue shaping church doctrine until the Reformation.

Life
Augustine was raised in Roman north Africa, educated in Carthage and employed as a professor of rhetoric in Milan by 383. He followed the Manichaean religion in his student days, and was converted to Christianity by the preaching and example of Ambrose of Milan. He was baptized at Easter in 387, and returned to north Africa and created an monastic foundation at Tagaste for himself and a group of friends. In 391 he was ordained a priest in Hippo. He became a famous preacher (more than 350 preserved sermons are believed to be authentic), and noted for combatting the Manichaean heresy. In 396 he was made coadjutor bishop of Hippo (assistant with the right of succession on the death of the current bishop), and remained as bishop in Hippo until his death in 430. He left his monastery, but continued to lead a monastic life in the episcopal residence. He left a Rule ( Latin Regula ) for his monastery that has led him to be designated the "patron saint of Regular Clergy ," that is parish clergy who live by a monastic rule.

Synopsis
Augustine is acknowledged as having been one of the most important influences on the development of the western Christianity.[ ] The theological system he developed dominated the mediaeval church until the thirteenth century and its influence is still felt today.[ ] A large number of his writings have survived and we know a great deal about his life from his Confessions and Revisions; from a contemporary biography,[ ] and from his letters, (over 200 of which have survived).[ ] His most famous work, Confessions (written about 397), was not intended simply as an autobiography as such. Rather, it is a long prayer of penitence and thanksgiving for the grace of God evidenced during the first 33 years of his life.[ ] Numerous modern biographies have been written[ ] and so I will sketch only a brief outline of his life.

Augustine's Confessions
by
St. Augustine
The Confessions of Augustine, Augustine of Hippo (Lafayette, IN: Sovereign Grace), paper.
This book is very personal, in fact it is his litany of repentance, and every reader should feel the urge to join him in confessing sin against a holy and gracious God.
The Confessions of St. Augustine is a noteworthy Christian classic. Written 1,600 years ago, as an autobiography, this book shows the work of the Lord's grace in irresistibly drawing Augustine to Himself.
The book exposes Augustine's innermost questions about life, his relationships with his closest personal acquaintances, and the events, people, and Scripture God employed in his conversion.
Although this book provides us with rich insight into the life and times of one of the greatest theologians and prolific writers of Christ's church, it also teaches us great lessons about the total depravity of man and the awfulness of sin.
Young (unbelieving) Augustine's ungodly, sinful lifestyle, is eventually productive of his realization of sin's dominion over him, his apprehension of God's mercy in Christ. His struggle with sin should be instructive to every believer. Augustine had known the temptations to sin, the power of sin, the consequences of sin, and his own personal wretchedness. He was deeply grateful for his glorious salvation and the brethren God used in effectually calling him to Himself.
