He had escaped from the French Revolution, and spent 72 hours in an open boat before drifting into Penzance harbour! Catholic directories from 1857 mention Mass being said here at intervals by clergy travelling from Bodmin or Plymouth, Sclerder or Lanherne, Liskeard, Camborne or Par. The history of the Parish possibly dates from 1911 when a Sunday Mass centre was inaugurated in East Hill, St. Austell, above a painter and decoratorÂ’s workshop. In 1918 the Prior of Bodmin asked the Catholic Missionary Society to come to Cornwall. Their visit prompted the establishment of a permanent Chapel in St. Austell. The Dowager Lady Bute donated one hundred pounds for the cost of the site in Ranelagh Road. Twenty four years later, on 25th

St. Alypius
The bosom friend of St. Augustine, though younger than he, was, after studying under Augustine at Milan, conspicuous at first as a magistrate in Rome. He abandoned that honour to follow his master into the Church. It is noteworthy that there is no mention of him as a saint in the ancient catalogues. His name was placed in the Roman Martyrology by Gregory XIII , in 1584, the evidence of his sanctity being sufficiently clear from the account of his life by St. Augustine. His conversion began when Augustine was still a Manichaean, and occurred in consequence of a discussion about the folly of those who give way to sensual indulgence. A relapse occurred subsequently, when he was dragged by some friends to witness the savage games of the arena; but the final step was taken when, in company with Augustine, in obedience to the voice, Tolle, lege , he read the text of St. Paul, Non in commessationibus , etc. They were both baptized by St. Ambrose, at Milan. After living for some time with Augustine, in the monastery of Hippo, he was made Bishop of Tagaste. This was in the year 394, and took place after his return from the Holy Land, where he had seen St. Jerome. Under his guidance Tagaste reproduced the sanctity, learning, monastic exactness, and orthodoxy of Hippo. The exact date of his death is not known, but his festival is kept on 15 August. T.J. Letters of St. Augustine

Saint Augustine was one of the foremost philosopher-theologians of early Christianity and the leading figure in the church of North Africa. He had a profound influence on the subsequent development of Western thought and culture, and shaped the themes and defined the problems that have characterized the Western tradition of Christian theology. His two most celebrated writings are his semiautobiographical Confessions and City of God , a Christian vision of history.
Augustine was born at Thagaste in Numidia, which is part of present day Algeria. His father, Patricius (died about 371), was a pagan (later converted to Christianity), but his mother, Monica, was a devout Christian who labored untiringly for her son's conversion and who was canonized by the Roman Catholic church. As a child he was schooled in Latin literature and later went to Carthage to study rhetoric, where he became a teacher. By the age of twenty he turned away from his Christian upbringing. He was repelled by its codes of behavior, but he never completely renounced it.
At Cathage he became enthusiastic about philosophy after reading Cicero's Hortensius . He considered becoming a Christian, but experimented with several philosophical systems before finally entering the church. For nine years, from 373 until 382, he adhered to Manichaeism, a Persian dualistic philosophy then widely current in the Western Roman Empire. With its fundamental principle of conflict between good and evil and its claim of a rational interpretation of Scripture, Manichaeism at first seemed to Augustine to correspond to experience and to furnish the most plausible hypothesis upon which to construct a philosophical and ethical system. Moreover, its moral code was not unpleasantly strict; Augustine later recorded in his

General Information Saint Augustine, b. Nov. 13, 354, d. Aug. 28, 430, was one of the foremost philosopher-theologians of early Christianity and, while serving (396-430) as bishop of Hippo Regius, the leading figure in the church of North Africa. He had a profound influence on the subsequent development of Western thought and culture and, more than any other person, shaped the themes and defined the problems that have characterized the Western tradition of Christian Theology. Among his many writings considered classics, the two most celebrated are his semiautobiographical Confessions, which contains elements of Mysticism, and City of God, a Christian vision of history.
Early Life and Conversion
Augustine was born at Thagaste (modern Souk-Ahras, Algeria), a small town in the Roman province of Numidia. He received a classical education that both schooled him in Latin literature and enabled him to escape from his provincial upbringing. Trained at Carthage in rhetoric (public oratory), which was a requisite for a legal or political career in the Roman empire, he became a teacher of rhetoric in Carthage, in Rome, and finally in Milan, a seat of imperial government at the time. At Milan, in 386, Augustine underwent religious conversion. He retired from his public position, received baptism from Ambrose, the bishop of Milan, and soon returned to North Africa. In 391, he was ordained to the priesthood in Hippo Regius (modern Bone, Algeria); five years later he became bishop.

Works of St. Augustine of Hippo
St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430) was one of the most prolific geniuses that humanity has ever known, and is admired not only for the number of his works, but also for the variety of subjects, which traverse the whole realm of thought. The form in which he casts his work exercises a very powerful attraction on the reader. Bardenhewer praises his extraordinary suppleness of expression and his marvellous gift of describing interior things, of painting the various states of the soul and the facts of the spiritual world. His latinity bears the stamp of his age. In general, his style is noble and chaste; but, says the same author, "in his sermons and other popular writings he purposely drops to the language of the people." A detailed analysis is impossible here. We shall merely indicate his principal writings and the date (often approximate) of their composition. Autobiography and Correspondence The Confessions are the history of his heart; the

Life
Augustine was raised in Roman north Africa, educated in Carthage and employed as a professor of rhetoric in Milan by 383. He followed the Manichaean religion in his student days, and was converted to Christianity by the preaching and example of Ambrose of Milan. He was baptized at Easter in 387, and returned to north Africa and created an monastic foundation at Tagaste for himself and a group of friends. In 391 he was ordained a priest in Hippo. He became a famous preacher (more than 350 preserved sermons are believed to be authentic), and noted for combatting the Manichaean heresy. In 396 he was made coadjutor bishop of Hippo (assistant with the right of succession on the death of the current bishop), and remained as bishop in Hippo until his death in 430. He left his monastery, but continued to lead a monastic life in the episcopal residence. He left a Rule ( Latin Regula ) for his monastery that has led him to be designated the "patron saint of Regular Clergy," that is parish clergy who live by a monastic rule.

35. St. Augustine Of Hippo
augustine of hippo (1930) On Christian Doctrine, Therese Sullivan, Trans. in P.Bizzell and B. Herzberg (Eds.) The Rhetorical Tradition, Bedford Books of st.
http://www.lcc.gatech.edu/gallery/rhetoric/figures/augustine.html
t. Augustine was a Third Century rhetorician who became a bishop of the Roman Catholic Church. Augustine was also a prolific writer on many subjects such as the liberal arts and Greek Pagan philosophy. His writings greatly influenced the development of the church as well as western culture and education.
Education and Background
Augustine was born to a pagan father and Christian mother in the city of Tagaste, in the Roman colony of Numidia (now known as Algeria). His formal education began at the public school in nearby Madaura, where Augustine was introduced to the polite language of Latin. Up until this point, he had for the most part spoken the Punic dialect of Numidia, and he became enthralled with the world of literature opened up to him through Latin. Augustine's studies of pagan Latin literature (particularly Cicero and Virgil) would greatly influence his style in later writings. After recieving his degree in Rhetoric from the university at Carthage, Augustine went to work as a teacher of rhetoric. It was at this time that Augustine read Cicero's "Hortensius", in which Cicereo places wisdom and th pursuit of truth above the value of Rhetoric. Augustine soon vecame torn between his ambition for a great career as rhetorician, and the pursuit of spiritual truth and wisdom(Fulop-Miller, 1945). His search for answers led him to the philosophy of Manichaeism (Brown, 1967). Augustine returned to his hometown of Tagaste and established himself there as a professor of rhetoric. He used his post there to advance the teachings of the Manichaes. When Augustine's closest friend died, he became disenchanted with this dualist philosophy because it could not produce answers to assuage his grief. This event left Augustine in a state of confusion with a complete lack of confidence. The brilliant rhetorician of Tagaste gave up his teaching to return to Carthage, where he again took up teaching while searching for a philosophy to solve the riddle of his Self (Fulop-Miller, 1945).

e-mail: simon@suffolkchurches.co.uk St Augustine of Hippo, Ipswich This is a large 1920's estate church on the south-eastern outskirts. Diocesan architect Munro Cautley observed the letter of Suffolk Perpendicular rather than the spirit. Consequently, the church looks rather dumpy in its concrete rendering. Grander than his St Andrew , it has none of the spirit of its age that you find at contemporary near neighbour All Hallows Mock-Perpendicular rises above mock-Tudor on the Bucklesham Road. Still, this is a landmark building, and it is light and airy inside. It contains the bell from the now-vanished church of St Peter, Linstead Magna , which was derelicted the year before St Augustine was built. Supposedly, the font is from there, too. But it seems possible that the Linstead Magna font was moved to St Margaret, Linstead Parva , and St Augustine inherited the old font from Linstead Parva. A bit like one of those party games. Cautley takes himself rather seriously in south-east Ipswich.
